Hello all.
Does anyone have experience with RedDots on milled slides vs dovetail inserts?
Thoughts of failure rates of each? The literature is both lacking and mixed.
And, are there brands that do not handle the punishment of a G20 or other 10mm autos?
Thanks in advance!

I have the Outer Impact dovetail mount on a G29. I started with this mount on a G20 before moving it to the G29. I then have a Vortex Venom mounted to that plate. I have had no issues with the plate coming loose or moving side to side. I had at least 500 rounds through the G20 before moving it to the G29 and 100 or so rounds with that. I did try a suppressor height front sight on the G20. With the added height of the red dot on the plate I thought I could get everything to co witness. But not so much. It still shot low using the iron sights. I have not tried it on the G29. I might. I do have a G19 MOS also with a Vortex Venom. The pros of having the MOS is having the ability to add suppressor height sights and having them co witness.
I wouldn't hesitate to go with the Outer Impact dovetail plate if I was to add one. If you follow the directions it is a sturdy mount.

I put a Vortex Venom on my 10mm XDm. my slide wasn't milled and I got the mount that went into the rear sight dovetail. so far everything has held zero. the only "problem" with using the sight dovetail is you don't have back up irons. I'm not sure if iron sights would co-witness a red dot on a pistol with a slide cut for the red dot but it sure would be handy. the only thing I don't like about the red dot on my pistol is that sometimes its hard to find the dot quickly in a stress situation. its not like a dot on a rifle that is naturally in position when you shoulder the rifle. I couldn't get a shot at a hog once because of that and because of it I would never put a dot on a S.D. or dangerous game (bear) pistol. other than that, for me, the dot sight really helps with accuracy.
Rooster41, thank you very much, that is what I needed to know.
I have the Holosun 507K x2, which actually has co-witnessing sights, so we shall see.
The 507K has very shallow indentations for plate nubs and than has 2 screws mid-set.
Is it absolutely needful to utilize the nubs? No adapter plates seem to be designed for those yet.
Blaster, thank you for your perspective.
One of our Sheriff Deputies recently returned from a combat instructor training and is heavily favoring RedDot style sights now. I have run shooting drills with his XDM and a 1911 and I am really loving this system.
I have not used the sight mount but did get my G20 milled at Battlewerx (no frills version) for only $88 delivered. It has worked great with both the Burris FFIII and Vortex Venom.
Here is a hot tip on what I think is a great $200 red dot. MidwayUSA has the Sightron SRS-2 6MOA sight on sale for just under $180 delivered. They had the 2 MOA for $199 a couple of weeks ago so I bought one of each. When they got down in stock on the 2MOA to 4 units they raised the price back up to $319. Super well made sight from Japan that I now like better than the Burris or Vortex. Their normal price is around $320 and I also recently found out its the same sight in every respect to the one offered by C-More in their less expensive STS2 that sells for more like $350. Mine have very clear lens superior to the other brands. The dots like most look more like the monster in the Sigourney Weaver movie though. My only perfect dots are in the tube type red dots.
Using a holosun 507c green on a milled slide. Very happy so far. Seems good a solid so far. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210110/3cc912178d84db396fff09acbad03c6a.jpg)

jazzsax8, awesome info, thank you.
Just ordered one.
riggeek, that is a nice looking rig. Do they mill the nubs into the slide? Or is it just relying on the screw threads?

Slide is milled Dow .120 inch . Then the front ledge is tight against the front of the sight, but no nubs. I thought about this a lot before I had to work done. I only seen 2 places that offered the nubs, but they did not offer any of the other machining. The company that done the work is local has a good reputation.
I have a Venom on my Springfield XDm 10 4.5 OSP and love it. My slide was factory cut for optics so mounting was a simple task.
I do not recommend the dovetail adapters. Do it right and get the slide milled for the optic of choice or get a pistol that is cut from the factory. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210111/28b4b1de24940da6e6cf98e94e286514.jpg)
