I have been looking for this old Lyman part since I bought a used press. Found a new improved part on the net at ebay. Pictures look real good and price was good at 19. 90 including shipping. It also directs the primers in a tube to a waste basket under the bench. It looks real good and I will update when in comes around March 3. Craig
Got the parts in today and it went together real nice. I will report more as I use the press as all I do is remove spent primers with this older Lyman t press. Craig
Hey Craig,
I found a 3D printed primer catcher a few years ago for my Rock Chucker press that works awesome; a huge help I must say
Ken
Don't know if I said this or not but I called Lyman and they didn't have the original part anymore. This new one is considered an improvement and it is because I had the old part years ago on an old single press and this is better as it directs the spent primers to a tube going to the trash basket and you can catch a good primer if you need to which I do at times. Craig
Worked 100 45 long colt through and I would say 4 out of 5 went OK but one shot out the top of the new part. Maybe the primer was coming out of the hole crazy or something but it wasn't perfect. I will of course work this some more and try 9mm next. Craig
Just finished a few 9mm and they were better. Need to work this whole thing a lot more . The primer is pushed out at the top of the stroke and the catcher is toward the bottom so there is room for the spent primer to get out in a wrong way. Will work some more tomorrow. Craig
OK did some more 9mm today and discovered a couple of things. If you were to use the Lyman as intended with a resizer/deprimer die this setup would fine as it is meant to work slower. I am using a Lee universal decapping die in this press and am going fast thus the problems. When I slow down it works much better. Also I put a new tube on the new part on the machine and the primers are getting bunched up in the tube. simple fix is to weight the tube down on the end so all spent primers will go straight down in the trash can. I may try heating it up to see if that may straighten it out a bit. Working better as I move along with it!!! Craig
Thanks everyone responsible for getting the site back up and running. I am lost without it!! Well I was depriming a few 9mm and I broke the new part I just bought for the press. BUT I did learn that if I put my new trash can under the press I catch most of the spent primers anyway. Will keep on with this method for the time being. The new part was in the way much of the time anyway. I think I will call or email the company I got it from to sound them out on the problems!! Craig
Hey Craig, sounds like the trashcan mentioned may be a winner, and yes, getting the forum back up and running is huge 😀
PrimerCatchers.com has a number of 3D printed primer catchers for old presses, including Lyman Spartan.
Yeah except thats who I got it from and it broke in less than a week. Craig :o
I have fixed the broken part with a piece of steel. All moving parts are steel now. Working better than new. I have some basic problems with this setup. After you remove the old primer if you want to put in a new primer with this press you have to remove the new primer catcher and put the primer setting arm back on the press. I am not sure this is a time saver except I am not going to be using this press for anything except removing spent primers. I have tried to e-mail the company but my e-mails get returned with a bad address???? Craig
Just did 50 9mm and 50 45. No problems and I didn't see any spent primers escape except down the tube!!! It does OK for what I want. Craig
Just a side note, don't mix 45 and 9mm in the wet tumbler!! The 9 nested in the 45 and the 9 didn't get cleaned as good. I will repeat the 9m by itself. Oops, Craig
Lol, learned that the hard way some years back, one caliber at a time unless they can't become intertwined
Oh I of course knew it but just forgot is all. I even tried the nylon net bags to keep them separated at one time but it didn't work. The 9mm is in the oven drying. The 45 is OK. If I may be so bold the wet tumbler brass comes out more shiny than new if you ask me. Craig
Lol
Well I broke the primer catcher yesterday but was still usable to a certain extent. Today I broke it for good unless I rebuild the whole thing but I think I could build a better one that might even work. Ha Ha!!! Craig
I'm not familiar with that press but there is a guy on eBay that 3D prints primer catchers for several different presses. I have one on my RCBS Partner press that I use exclusively for depriming and it works very well and was very reasonably priced.

Bought a bunch of brackets and what not to rebuild this catcher again. Just for something to do. Craig
Lol
Just layed out the new setup for the catcher and it will work better this time. I bought to much stuff but can return some that I don't use. This will have adjustments the original didn't have. Craig
You all will get a kick out of this!! I was going to work on the catcher but thought I would get 100 40 cal in the tumbler and then start on the catcher. Well I got to 91 or so on the decapping and the press lockup up and wouldn't raise up full. I thought a spent primer was jammed in the arm pivot arrangement but had to disassemble the whole arm to see the problem. Spent primer?? NO it was a part of the catcher that is placed in the slot to redirect the spent primer to go to the catcher. It's magnetic so it's no problem to reset or remove, so I removed it and everything is back to normal. This whole catcher thing is a big waste!! I am very tired of it. Craig
