Title: American Reloading
Post by: gadabout on July 01 2021 08:48:16 AM MDT
I just got in a load of 9mm bullets from American yesterday. There were 1000 115g FMJ that were fine as I have ordered these in the past as new product and it was always fine. The other item I bought this time was a lot of 500 9mm mixed pulled 115g and 124g, what I got is anyone's guess. I sorted into about 6  different large groups not even looking at weights at this time. There are so many different bullets with each group I will need to sort out each group as I go along. As an example one group is JHP. There is at leased 10 different bullets and of course different weights. I guess I could pick out a bullet and load all those untill gone then move on to the next. This is not what I thought I was getting so it is a buyer beware kind of thing. I am not sure what market they were going for with this mix but had I known I would have passed that's for sure.  Craig :(

Yeah I am starting to weigh some now and the weights are all over the place. I even have some that are so light I don't know what they could be.  Craig

Yea, the price we pay for pulled bullets 😊

Well I have done really well using American so far. This was weird but I do think I can shoot  like 95 percent of these. Just sorting them is the issue.  Craig

May want to check by length as well to further sort them

Hey Wade I am checking width as well as I have one bullet that weighted in at 84g??? not sure what it is but I did get some v crown and others I recognize from my vast past. Craig

84gr's wow 😀

I started weighing the pulled bullets I buy from American Reloading too. awhile back before the COVID scam, I got some 180 gr. HSTs that weighted between 100 gr. and 185 gr. what tipped me off was I could see that some were only about half full of lead!
Title: Re: American Reloading
Post by: gadabout on July 02 2021 06:43:11 AM MDT
Well I will say that American states very clearly that the pull downs need inspected very closely as it is easy to get mixed up but I have never had a problem and got what I paid for if not extra. This order was a "premium mix" order whatever that means. The more I get into it the better I feel about it. I will shoot these up over time. Craig

I went thru my big load of JHP and the bulk of it like 300 rounds are 125g what I was hoping for. Still about 5 brands but only a few plated the rest JHP. I am feeling much better about this order already. Craig

a lot of work, but time well spent...Now you get the joy of loading / shooting them 😀

I put a smile on my face Kenk!! Just loaded up 50 9mm 124g jhp and all went perfect. It puts a nice hole in my JHP sort, I also pulled out some 115g that are one brand I could load but I am looking for more to make 50 or so. I have a lot of plated but nice bullets to sorr out and some 147g I am coming across as I go. I am loading the 124 at 6.0g 6.4 being max and the same for the 115g as 6.7 is max for those. The 147g is max at 5.0 so will go for 4.7 or so but that sure seems light. I'll check other sites for data on that. Craig

I have sorted all the JHP which was the largest group. I have an easy 100 115g and like 40+ 124g and like 30+ 147g and remember this is only the first group. I have another large group of FMJ to sort yet. Are we having fun now?? Well when you sit down and do it it's not that bad and you get a sense of accomplishment. I am getting real accomplished. BTW since I am studying each bullet I have founds these to be gold dots to the most extent. That's good news for me as I like them.  Craig

OK loaded another 100 this morning and put a nice dent in the 500. I have another 100 misc 124s and 115 to do then I think I will be down to very weird 147g misc. to finish. Monday is a good day to reload as some businesses are closed. I started early so will get 200 done today and maybe all. Craig

Post by: gadabout on July 05 2021 09:27:04 AM MDT
I did forget about the FMJ but there are only about 100 of those. I am done with the brass as I have done 200 today and the last 100 is in the cooker. I can load 200 this afternoon and if there are any left may be finish those. There are some really strange rounds I am not sure if I can load those or not. Craig

I have done around 300 or more and just have some strange 89g bullets and the fmj left to do. Also some 147g. Craig

I loaded the 89g bullets at 4.1 starting load for HP-38 as I found good data for 90g.  Craig

I did find some 147g that were in a small cup from the first sort go around but I just finished them off. I will start next on FMJ but need more brass first. Craig

Well I am done!!!!!  I have a few like 20 rounds that are lead coated all different. I may just trash them but not sure. I did reload over 500 so that is good and I can safely burn them up at my leisure. Not a real pleasant experience if you ask me. To many weird rounds. Oh well live and learn!!  Craig

I just  now used the last of an 8 lb. jug of WC-846 surplus rifle powder that I bought from American Reloading. :D

Well my 20 rounds of painted lead turned out to be 40 rounds but they are loaded. I don't have anything left to load except for like1000 FMJ......ah I load these as needed mainly for friends but I have plenty to give away before I need to worry about that 1000. Maybe I'll take the day off or go shooting.  Craig

Just placed another order with American. 124g HST pulled. They will all be one bullet, no sorting!!!! Back to normal.  Craig

OK nobody talking so I guess I will. Just got in from shooting a bunch of the 500 weird rounds and most all shot great. Had some miner issues with the 89g rounds that I loaded too light. Just wouldn't eject all the spent carts. Not all, just 2 or 3 out of 15 or so. All rounds shot good,  I could have been better!!  Craig

Sounds great Craig, its been raining down here so much even our hard ground is like walking on a sponge!
By the time we dry out I'll be playing catch up on all the things I could not get done as a result of this weather!

It's still raining here if it's not 100 degrees. BTW I got in the order of 500 125g HST rounds so I can load except I am all most out of primers!!!!!!!! Craig

Hey Craig, are you able to get primers locally?
Title: Re: American Reloading
Post by: gadabout on July 13 2021 01:11:02 PM MDT
No!!! Last  ones I bought at a gun show and paid 125.00 per 1000. I just got in from a local gun place and the shelves are empty!! They have a fair amount of loaded rounds but no primers, powder and no projectiles. I am real tired of all this.  Craig

I just saw a few places online offering them for around $90.00 - $100.00 per 1K, way expensive as far as I'm concerned, think I paid $34.00 pre-pandemic for 1K

Not sure if it's me just being cheap or sticking to my principles, but I'll just wait it out rather pay scalper prices. I'd rather buy factory Ammo than feed those scumbuckets.

Hey Vice I couldn't agree more but I love to reload and get antsy when I am low on stuff. I was out today shopping and the local place had 9mm 50 round box for 28.50. I can do around 200 at that price but my point is we are all paying to much.  Craig

Post by: Vice on July 15 2021 01:04:31 PM MDT
I hear ya gad, agree 100%.

I love reloading as well as casting, so my costs are pretty low. If I get too bored I'll fill in that reloading time with casting while waiting for prices to get reasonable.

Was setting primers today getting ready to do the 124's I just got from American. They are HST but look like v crown to me with a small open dot in the center but really the hole looks smaller than a v crown. Doesn't matter they are a new bullet vs a pull down I think  at pull down prices. Now I was putting away some of the zombie bullets from the American mix order when one bullet fell out of the case. I did have trouble with one bullet setting as the bullet just seemed smaller.  I taper crimped harder I thought but still not enough. Is there anything else I should do? I did try to resize the case but it didn't seem to help. BTW this is a Winchester case. It's not worth going to any great length to fix expect it might happen again as the brass came from a big box of brass and there were more Win cases but no problems except this one.  Let me know what anybody thinks!!  Craig

Just finished up 100 125g HST at 6.3g depending on who's data you go by these are right on the HOT line. Wanted to do um at 6.2 but decided what the heck and pumped them up. Craig

Back from the range tested 125g hot loads against other loads that were loaded lighter. Shot as expected but very nice round. I will load more of these as I have a lot and a few primers left. Good day all in all/  Craig

Didn't get into it yesterday but I was shooting the Sig Sauer m17 or p-320 with the Romeo reflex sight on it. I think serious shooters will evidently go to these sights as they are the best I have ever used.  Holstering is still an issue but my holster guy made one for it but concealed carry is a problem for me. There are other issues anyway. I am waiting for universal outside carry to be accepted anyway.  Craig

You can outside carry in Ohio but no one does it. My main point is that with the romeo site on the top of the sig it doesn't holster very well at all. Craig
Title: Re: American Reloading
Post by: Kenk on July 23 2021 08:00:12 PM MDT
Got it, if this will be primarily for carry, and you are talking 10 yards, and likely much less, if it were me, I'd just go with the factory irons, functionality removing the issue, but that's just me
Title: Re: American Reloading
Post by: gadabout on July 24 2021 11:09:33 AM MDT
It has both but you would of course have to remove the romeo site but why not just switch to one of the other 30+ guns I have setup for carry?? In fact the Taurus g2 is perfect for carry and I haven't found anything really better. The Sig is a better gun for target shooting for me is all. BTW got 200+ 9mm cases in the oven drying so hello more 125g HST rounds. One funny thing is I was going to use Universal powder to save the Power Pistol for better rounds and then remembered these 125 HST are my better rounds. Ha Ha.  Craig

One more thing. Wet tumbling the 200 9mm cases turned out like new. I know we have talked about before but getting the cases cleaned  this well with the primer pockets like new is a very big part of reloading for me. These cases were all kinds of bad, old, tarnished, burnt, a real hodgepodge of bad cases. They are as new looking as new cases are. Just saying.  Craig

Well I have done 300 out of 500 HST and I am very short on primers so had to stop. One nice thing about the HST is they are all for me!!!After all who deserves them more?? Nobody that I can think of. I give away the fmj as they are cheap and feed and shoot in any gun. I allways make sure my friends have a few JHP that I suggest they keep for defenceive work but that can be 50 rounds they never shoot so it's good as I like the 125 HST for myself. Got to find some primers. Anybody else heard about this company that bought a million small pistol primers and only needed 1/2 a million so the rest will be sold off. It's  a strange deal as the primers are from Switzerland or some place that makes primers. They are Rudg brand but the company that bought them is having shipping issues to ship them to local customers. I have talked to the gent that is trying to sell these primers and he is trying to resolve the shipping issue in a week or two. I have seen a picture of the packaging of the primers and they are loose packed from 1400 to 1500. Accurate counts but not all the same but at 100.00 per pack I will take a chance. We will see.  Craig
