What is the best 10mm ammo (https://www.outdoorlimited.com/handgun-ammo/10mm-ammo/) hunting round?
Depends on what you are hunting.
For me, a 180, or 200gr XTP or Gold Dot works great for whitetail, for anything thick skinned / large and toothy, I would use a 200, or 220gr hard cast
Federal Fusion has a 10mm round out now. It is quite pricey @ $39.99/20 rounds at my local Scheels. Ive have been a fan of Fusion for a long time and is my go to round. It is a bonded bullet and has great weight retention. I think it is a 200 grain bullet. I have not shot any of the Fusion 10mm yet as I only bought one box. Im waiting for Scheels to drop the price. It is not moving very fast off the shelf. But I dont expect that very soon.
They do look promising, Buds offers the best price I can find at $30.95

At aprx $6.00 more than Underwood?s 200gr XTP, they would be worth trying, looks like they are getting 1,200 FPS

Depends on what you are hunting.
And the distance you're pulling the trigger is also important
I think I'm going to try the 155 xtp this fall if I don't get one with a crossbow first.
But I'm hunting whitetail and at the 35 yards I'll probably be shooting, I think I prefer the extra few hundred fps over the 25 gr of extra weight that I'm getting while using the 16" carbine barrel. I was chrony'ing those 155's at over 1770 fps. So, I think that will do pretty good if the bullet doesn't catostrophically fail.
Hey John, at aprx 1,770, you?ll for sure get your desired pass through 😀
I'm hoping I do. I'd rather leak out of both sides than just one.
As long as the XTP holds together. That's the $100 question right now. I don't know what to expect from it to be honest. I don't even care so much about expansion. I just hope it doesn't fragment like their SST bonded bullets did that one time I got one with my 6.8spc. There was just a handful of fragments underneath the hide on what would've been the exit side just under the fur.
Early archery comes in Sept 3. So, that's just next weekend. And I can use my crossbow, so with any luck, I may be able to cross trails with one and get some fresh meat next weekend. :) And if that's the case, I'm still happy.
You could always try the Nosler 150gr JHP, but have no idea how it would hold together. I?m seriously considering the 200gr Federal Fusion this fall out of the P220 Elite, just looks like it may be a winner.

A quick search shows the 155 XTP to be rated up to 1300fps. May not hold together at those velocities.
The 150gr Nosler might work then, Underwood?s 135gr 10mm with the Nosler bullet has an advertised velocity of 1,600
Thanks for the info.
Maybe I should just stick with 175 gr hardcast? Even with the 200'ish fps slower velocity?
Gosh, even at that, it should still zip right through a a deer, unless of coarse deer in your neck of the woods are a lot tougher than in MN 😂
Hey John, I still think an expanding bullet would be more effective, but that?s just me. My deer have all gone down relatively easy, sure, some run for a bit, but if you picked up something that could take that velocity in the 150gr area, you would likely make a bigger wound channel and a pass through to boot
With me never hunted with a 10mm, I really am grasping at straws and guessing a lot about what I "think" it may do. So, I'm probably the last person in the world that should be offering opinions. And I often get hung up on "the numbers". Which I know may not do what I guessed they would in the real world.
Which now has me questioning bullet choice altogether after nannyhammer mentioned what the xtp was rated at.
I looked on Hornady's website and the xtp's are rated at 1500 fps. So, that's much closer to the velocity that I was getting with the 180 xtp, so I may should switch to it. I could always back off a couple tenths of gr of powder to lower the velocity closer to what the bullet is rated at.

Hey John, it seems like we?ve talked about this in the past, but because you want a complete pass through when deer hunting, Lehigh?s Xtreme Hunter looks extremely promising for your desired results. Check out the below videos

Yeah, we've spoken about it. And I have decided after archery season is underway, if I haven't gotten a deer by just before rifle season that I'm going to try to work up a few loads and the Lehigh was on the list of ones to try. I wouldn't be too surprised with the lighter bullet, if I couldn't bump it up to close to 1800 fps. While I don't know that to be true, though based on what the gun is doing with 155's, would lead to reason that the lighter bullets may exceed what I'm getting now.
I know all of that is relative and there's a lot of unknown variables were sealing the bore and blow by and everything else, but in general, if 155's clock in around 1770'ish fps, that 140 gr bullets would probably exceed that by at least some margin.
But again, I'm just guessing.
175 hard cast, the 140 lehigh will both be on the table.
Who know, maybe they've changed the bullet metal composition. The 8th Edition Hornady manual shows 850-1300fps for the 155gr P/N 40000. For P/N 40040, the 180gr it shows 750-1450fps. I would use the heavier bullet and hope that it holds up after it shed some of the initial velocity. I'm currently running a home cast 185gr HP but so far nothing bigger than a possum has given me an opportunity. Best of luck and let us know how it works out so we can add to our knowledge of XTP performance.
10-4. I sure would.
180gr XTP
I shoot them from a G20 and a 16? carbine. They kill hogs!
With Hornady saying 750-1450fps, I would think the 1475 would be somewhat of a conservative number on their part. I wouldn?t think exceeding that by 1-2 hundred feet per second would make that much of a difference, but will certainly come apart at some point, it?s just when. All I know is that the XTP is an outstanding bullet.
