Title: 30 Super Carry
Post by: Rooster41 on October 09 2022 08:44:22 AM MDT
Anybody have one? For some reason I cannot explain, I am drawn to this caliber. I haven't decided if I am trying to talk myself into or out of buying this. I am looking at the Shield (not EZ). But I am curious if any of you have this round or at least tried it out. Two things are keeping me from getting this today. First is ammo availability in my local area. The only ammo on the shelf locally is the Remington hollow points. And after buying Remington 30-30 ammo for my TC Contender, I am not too interested in Remington Ammo. I am sure I can drive 30 min East and find some or up to the Twin Cities. But with gas prices it would be less expensive to order it online and have it shipped. Second is load data. I have been keeping an eye on bullet and powder manufacture sites for load data. Nothing I have found yet.

Other than affording you slightly higher capacity, I don?t see a lot if advantages over 9mm. I?m sure other companies will offer this ammo in the future, but the question is, will firearm manufacturers take the chance when the could produce, say something in 10mm that is regaining popularity

You're right! I kinda see this going the way of the 45 GAP. But I can't get it out of my head.

If I had unlimited amounts of cash, I would likely give it a go.

I have a S&W Shield EZ in 30 SC. I like it and have shot probably 300 rounds of factory ammo with no problems at all.  I just assembled everything I need to reload it EXCEPT for any load data.  Not sure I want to attempt load development on my own with no starting point.

I also have a 9MM S&W Shield (not EZ).  I don't see any particular advantage to the 30 SC over the 9mm except for the 2 extra rounds.  If somebody builds a double stack mag version the extra capacity of the 30SC could be significant.

I just like to try different things which is why I fit a Bar-Sto 10MM barrel to my 38 Super Kimber 1911 which is my only 10MM pistol at this time.

Hopefully we?ll see some 30-SC pull-downs in the upcoming months

If I was a young collector, I?d buy one, and keep it NIB in my safe.  Years down the road, a collector will pay big money for it.

Not a huge selection of ammo for it either. SGAmmo offers some of the better deals on bulk for all around factory ammo, and it?s still $10.00 more a box than say S&B 9mm

I still haven?t gotten one. Although Scheels is making it tempting. The Shield Plus is marked down to $349 last time I was in there. They have two brands of ammo. Remington and Speer. Remington is marked down to $12.99/20 rounds. I think the will go the way of the 45 GAP. So I dont think I will get one.

My thoughts as well

It seemed  like a good idea to the designers I?m sure, higher capacity, and slightly less recoil than a 9, but I think you may be right

Nobody asked so I'll tell ya!

30 super carry is basically a hot 32 H&R Magnum (or a de-rated 327 federal) in a tidy, albeit very high pressure, auto loading pistol cartridge.  And the external ballistics do look very nice.  Same basic energy profile as WWI/WWII 9mm ammo - 350-360 lb ft at the muzzle.  Combine that with added magazine capacity and you have a nifty little package that delivers FBI spec gel performance out of a sub-compact pistol with added capacity over a 9mm Luger.

Problems

Anyone that is going to consider this cartridge that is a serious gun guy is going to get into the data of a bunch of cartridges and the philosophy behind their personal defense tactics before the drop below the mythical 9mm defense threshold.  In that process they are likely to re-align their mindset on a couple of issues:  Hits are the only shots that matter and as a civilian I just want the threat to stop not make an arrest.

Since 30 Super is about the same recoil as 9mm because physics, it is no easier to shoot than 9mm. Therefore no easier to make hits.  It is more tolerant of a low hit rate due to more ammo in the mag, but misses don't count.  We need the hit rate to go up for a "compromise" cartridge to make sense.

Add to that the realization that, unlike police standards that require the subject be detained, as a civilian a threat that leaves is still a threat no more.  As a civilian I don't have to detain and arrest a person who threatened me with death/SBI.  I just have to make the threat leave and report the incident.

And with that analysis complete, 32 ACP looks just as viable as 30 super carry.  And with much less recoil and muzzle blast it is easier to shoot.

I think 30 Super is making a lot of people reconsider the value of a 32 ACP gun.  I know whenever I start to consider it, I end up doing some practice with by Beretta 82 and calling it good. (And then carrying my Glock 20 for defense of course :-))

The SC is just the .327 magnum rimmed in a rimless form factor. Once you look harder at the ballistics the advantages become clear. If I could get a classic P series in a 30 SC, I would

If I could afford one of these, I would want it in a double-stack, full-sized service pistol. (I would want to squeeze every bit from the cartridge I could).

I believe that I will carry some 68-grain .380+p Underwood "Extreme Defender" in my 13 +1 round magazine in my CZ 83 Satin Nickel Finish Pistol and call it good.
