Title: 9mm light load for 115 or 125g bullets
Post by: gadabout on October 16 2022 12:02:42 PM MDT
I have been trying to load a light load to shoot in mini type guns like a S&W CSX. The last one I tried was a 115g with 5.5g Power Pistol and it functioned fine but it was  kind of loud and if I go much lighter it may not function the slide but I will try in the low 5 range. Any ideas?? Max for this setup is 6.7 so I am real safe, 6.3 for 125g and 5.0 for 147 to give you some idea of where I am coming from.  Craig

Hey Craig, I?ve thought about trying something like this for a few younger relatives that have not been shooting before, but ended up taking them to the range with .22?s instead. My concern was possibly getting a squib load, but after looking into it further, it sounds like that would be unlikely.

Well Ken I just blew up a model 19 with a bad load so I am real careful now. But having Power Pistol in stock makes me sleep better.  I guess I will work down from 5.5 to 5 ish. I think 5.2 or so ought to do it. BTW For carry all my loads are fine except a little harsh on the small guns for carry but all I need is one or two shots. Craig

I just finished 5.1g 5.2g and 5.3g and will test tomorrow. I didn't need to go to 5.4 as 5.5 was way to powerful. We will see how these go!!  Craig

Good deal, sounds like you know exactly what you?re looking for. Now that I have the Houge HandAll on my micro GX4, the HST and Gold Dot +P factory loads aren?t bad, without the rubber grip it wasn?t nearly as pleasant as it is now.

OK shot them all this morning and here is the report. First all shot and worked the slide with the 5.1 almost not functioning as well as the others but did function. The 5.2 and 5.3 were fine and I could shoot all in the S&W CSX.  I have been thinking lately more and more that in a light carry pistol you need good rounds over light rounds as you shouldn't need many shots. That's my take on it and I wouldn't be shooting those guns all day anyway!! Craig

Hey Craig, or you could just pick up a few boxes of standard pressure 124gr HST or Gold Dots, do some reliability testing and call it good. Our local Sheriffs department uses both, and is very happy with them

Hey Ken, yeah the more I think about it the old thing about using factory loads for defense is probable the way to go in the long run but I was looking for a load I could shoot like 30 to 50 at the range without a lot of strain. Oh well it isn't but something to do. Ha Ha!!  Craig

Hey Ken I just bought a Taurus GX4 from a big sale at my range and it is really a carbon copy of my G2 Mallineum without the safty. My question for you is abou the trigger pull. Mine is very hard but I compared it to other gx4 and they are all very hard on the pull. How is yours? I do think since it's just for carry it is OK and super safe!!  Craig

Morning Craig, it is, but has a very distinct wall. On mine, you know exactly when it will go bang, unlike many polymer pistols that haven?t any wall. For a pistol in the mid $200.00 range, it?s tough to beat. I have read several articles regarding trigger issues on the GX4, primarily on the early released ones. It appears that either it?s a good one, or it?s not. Also, the 10 and 11 rd mags seem to work well, but have read about problems with the 13 rd mags. I did do a couple of minor upgrades on the GX4, the Night Fision big dot front sight (left the rear sight alone) from Lakeline, and a Houge HandAll grip sleeve. Houge didn?t make a HandAll for the GX4 when I got mine, so I spoke with an engineer at Houge, and he said the best fit for that weapon was the Ruger Security-9 Compact, which fit perfectly once I got the darn thing on. Good luck, and enjoy your GX4
