Title: Tarnished projectiles from American
Post by: gadabout on November 01 2022 04:59:58 PM MDT
I am testing wet tumbling cleaning on some badly tarnished 45 cal I found in the reloading room. I also have some tarnished 9mm coming from American reloading so I hope this cleaning works but it should I would think. I will know in another few minutes.  I will report then. Craig

OK got in the 1000 9mm FMJ from American and they were not that bad but I put 2 or 300 in the wet tumbler so we will see but my 45's were MUCH worse and they came out like new. I will report back in a half hour or so.  Craig

The first 300 came out perfect and so I put the rest in the tumbler and it had trouble starting due to weight but once I got it going it is chucking right along. It has the power but with the weight the drive wheels were slipping. Anyway the done 300 are in the George Forman getting dry.  Craig

I will say that some of these bullets were very tarnished but all came out like new. Really these were all not that bad to start with but now will be like new or better.  Craig

Just loaded 50 115g FMJ and it was all good. I will shoot tomorrow but I shoot this weight all the time so it will be no surprises. It's nice to be able to load 2 or 3 hundred in one sitting if you want. I seldom get this many of the same bullet to load. Many of the large groups are two or three different tips that takes time to sort and weigh. I will do at leased 200 tomorrow!!  Craig

OK shot the 115g FMJ cleaned rounds this morning and they were perfect. A nice thing is I loaded them at 5.7g power pistol which is 1 full grain under max and they worked the slide on two guns without an issues. I will try to load a bunch this afternoon but I couldn't be happier with the outcome so far.  They do seem a little more reserved than what I have been shooting lately.  Craig

Hey Craig, Good deal, is the purpose of down loading your 9?s to make them easer and more fun to shoot in sub compacts?

Yes. But I had been loading 124g so I just left it there to see how they were! I think I could load these up to 6.2 or so and still be comfortable. I try to load light if everything functions correctly.  Craig

Plus the micros get a little tiring with +P type loads if you?re shooting a lot in the given session. I typically do short but frequent range trips, I rarely go and shoot a few hundred rd?s like some of the guys

Hey Ken I shoot like 30 to 50 rounds a day. But I did reload like 160+ rounds today so far and it was fun. I also really enjoy the Sig 2022 as it is different feeling even compaired to other Sig's. It took a while to dial in the rear site but I got it finally. Craig

Nice, let me know what you think of the GX4 after you shoot it more, like I said before, like with any manufacturer, there?s always a few that get out the door with problems, and likely more with the budget brands

This will be my third Taurus and I haven't had any problems other than me not understanding a given problem with a reload or whatever. I really like the price points. Make un cheap and then I see a lot of discounts. Ya know really the  GX4 and my G2 are the same size and perfect for carry. I just am not comfortable with a heavy gun as it tends to pull down my paints. Craig

Shot more of these today with no problems except I got off shore primers that didn't go off on the first try but shot in the 2022.

Well I shot like 30 or 40 115g FMJ today without issue so I reloaded 50 to replace the ones I shot. Got bored so I loaded 50 more. That's the problem with having a lot of supplies, you can load a lot more than you are shooting at leased I tend to. It is nice having 3 or 4 hundred extra in the trunk of the car in case you need them at the range. Craig

Hey Craig, with primer prices where there at, I?ve slowed way down on my loading. Once my supplies got to a certain level, I?m not comfortable digging into them till there?s more on hand. Probably kinda a silly, but don?t want to put myself into that (I?m totally out) situation, plus it?s hard to stomach $80.00 or higher for what used to run me $37.00

Yeah Ken I hear ya. I just like to reload and before the new range opened I was shooting may be once a month and then only 50 rounds so I had like 5000 rounds just of 9mm loaded and a ton of everything else. I still have a lot of everything else but I shoot 9mm every day so it goes at a steady pace. It is just nice to not have to worry about bullets, powder, or primers for a change. I have already loaded a good 300 of the FMJ but only shot like 50 or so. It's a good feeling for a change!!!  Craig

Are you consistently finding US made primers anywhere in particular for a reasonable gouge prices, or mainly offshore, and if so from where and how much? Thanks Craig

No not anywhere but Powder Valley had some off shore for a reasonable price. I do have problems with these but only like 2 out of 100 and I can live with that.  Craig

BTW I have loaded about 125 115g FMJ so far today and it's early and I have 50 more prepped. Craig

Thanks Craig, from whom, and how much from your offshore primer folks?

Like I said Power Valley had the primers and they were like I don't remember the price but will look it up,  Craig

OK like 210 out the door for 2000.  Craig

BTW I forgot one of my Taurus guns so I have four. The GX4, the G2, the th9 and one other I can't remember right now. I thought of it the other day but it escapes me right now. Craig

Well it came to me I have a Taurus slim. I think it was my first Taurus.

From my limited experience with Taurus, they seem to have somewhat of a checkered past. It?s nice that they seem to be pulling it together, at least with some of their recent stuff like the GX4

Yeah and I forgot to say that I think my GX4 is breaking in as the more I shoot it the easier the trigger seems!!  Craig

Other than the take up, mine has a very distinct wall, and is actually ok, vs how many polymer pistols don?t really have a wall, they just get to a certain point and go bang

Looking for something to do I put the 300+ FMJ that I cleaned first and didn't come out as nice as the second group I cleaned back in the tumbler and boy they came out like brand new!! Craig

Was a little bored so I loaded up 50 of the newly cleaned 115's and boy are they good.  Loaded them at 6.2 Power Pistol so we will see tomorrow!!  Craig

The GX4 is about as lightweight as it gets unless you get into something really small with a potentially lower capacity. I carry my GX4 periodically in the Vedder Pocket Locker and is perfect when the utmost discreetness is necessary.

Keltec P15, which just released, is a whopping 30% lighter than the GX4, but carries 15 rounds.  By my math, using 124 grain speer +p Gold Dot weight (197 grains), the P15 will weigh in 21.5 oz fully loaded 15+1.  There are 13 round (maybe 12) flush fit mags for the P15 and with one of those the P15 weighs the same loaded as the GX4 empty.

The P15 is 0.20" longer and 0.60" taller, but is 0.125" thinner.  And, according to a puff piece by TFB-TV it has resolved the heavy, gritty trigger that plagued the P11.

Note that the P15 barrel is a full 4" barrel the 3.0" of the GX4.  This will deliver a significant boost in ballistics.

Right now they are selling on GB for over MSRP, but after the "new gun" frenzy dies down I may have to grab one of these.

Hum I have always liked Keltec stuff so I will look at one when I can find it.  I miss my PF-9. Craig

I don?t know anything about the P15 that Sqlbullet was referencing, but would be worth looking into. The only Kel-Tec I have shot is my friends PMR-30, and is surprisingly fun weapon in 22WMR, not to mention, the trigger is incredible for a sub $400.00 weapon

I looked a a couple of local places and they didn't have it. Most hadn't even heard of it. That sums up the local crap I deal with.  Craig

Yeah Ken one store looked it up on GB and they had it but I need to hold a gun in my hand before plunking down large money. GB was even a little high priced compared to other local dealers but they did have it where as nobody local had it. Craig

Good point on holding it first. My best friend from high school is a huge GB guy, and has learned their system well, a little too well as he put it. Dave?s one of these guys that?s single, makes a ton of money, and just bids at will, must be rough huh 😀

I realized a few years ago that I bought guns as I didn't get enough free time to shoot.  So instead of enjoying the guns I had, I dreamed that the next gun would be fun to finally shoot.

I now have a smallish collection by true collector standards, but quite a few guns by most other standards.  Also, lots of my grown kids still keep their guns in my safe rather than in their apartments/starter homes. (and don't get me started on the cost to get a home these days).

Absolutely, our youngest daughter at 24 just closed on a townhome in the city?s. It?s an ok place, but has substantially less of everything than our 3 bedroom rambler out in the sticks, and for a ton more money. Just glad we bought ours 20 plus years ago

Just got in another 1000 tarnished 9mm 115g FMJ from American. I think I have like 200 left over from the first 1000 but this is nice as I can clean when I want but 200+ are in the wet tumbler as I post this. I don't think these are as bad as the first one's were but I though what the heck I would polish them anyway.Isn't but something to do.  Craig

Well the first group came out like new so i have another group in the wet tumbler. I did something different this time as I used the same water with the Limeshine and Dawn already in the water. We will see.  Craig
