Title: 10mm short, 10mm special, OK 40 caliber
Post by: gadabout on January 27 2023 12:18:31 PM MST
Don't know if anyone remembers but I have a Detroit PD 40 cal that I got as a police trade in that I had minor problems with COL that I fixed and everything was fine with it. I took it today to shoot as I haven't in a few months. I found what I thought was the 40 cal reloads but was having  problems with them not feeding into the mag. So finally after a few minutes found I was trying to feed 10mm into the 40 cal mag. Duh!! I did bring some Nosler factory 40 cal rounds and they shot great. Also got home and I have like 400+ 40 cal ready to go!! Oh well!!   Craig

I could see how that could happen

Yes, I could see how that could happen, too.

I don't know I think it may be brain damage or my bad eye site!! Anyway I will shoot the 40 today. It did shoot nice yesterday but with factory rounds and I want to see how my reloads stack up. I always thought 40 should  be nice but the police dumped it so fast I thought there might be a problem but really not as they just wanted more rounds in a gun and 9mm was always there!! Craig

Well the 40 came around due to the fact that the 10mm lite could be put in a smaller case ( 40 S&W ) AND the smaller case would fit in the 9mm frame size...
They always had more the same amount of rounds in a 9 and 40 with the hi-cap mags.

I think PDs dumped the 40s cause it was more costly to supply ammo over the 9mm ( not to mention improvements in bullets themselves ), and no real diff between the two

Most Law enforcement went back to 9mm for several reasons.
They are to bring the perp to justice first and far most.  So the 9mm may be more survivable if the perp is hit with gunfire.
Maintain more cartridge capacity in the officers firearm and on person for reloads.
The uniformity between departments using a standard cartridge.
Yes the economics with 9mm for training and proficiency to keep the budget items cost effective.
Yes, there have been vast improvements with the 9mm ammunition projectiles that perform well and meet the standards as set by FBI protocols.

Well I got mine because it was cheap!! Ha Ha. Well it shot OK today but to harsh for me so I will try to lighten the load. The round was 165g v-crown JHP Power Pistol 7.5g. I think I could get by with 7.0g or even less but I don't have anymore projectiles to load anyway, need to get some!! Craig

Might seem odd, but I kind of like that ?harshness? hence the joy I get when shooting hotter 10mm hand loads, or say Underwoods 135gr Nosler. Was shooting a friends 44 mag  yesterday with some newly developed hand loads, and man, I tell ya, that?s just some pretty exhilarating stuff 😀

I don't want to start an internet war but I don't think you guys know what you are talking about. 😃

Last year the President said on TV, I saw it, the 9mm will blow out a lung. I understood that to be the 9mm is more powerful than a 10mm. I am now relying on the .40 SW for my defensive needs!  I'm just saying! 🙂

Got a mixed load from American Reloading today and they all seem to be 155g flat nose FMJ. I could load these in 10MM also. Will try some at about 8.0g Power Pistol which is light as 9.0 is the max listed for 40 cal.  Craig

Reloaded about 11 40 cal with the 155g FMJFP American bullet and they seem to come out OK. Will shoot tomorrow. Craig

Shot the 11 round and four would not chamber. Got home and found the sizing die had slipped out of adjustment, Fixed that and resized the loaded rounds and all chambered just fine. Will shoot tomorrow. The rounds that did chamber shot great and I will shoot more of this gun.  Craig

This is what happens when you shoot 9mm for like a year then setup for 40 cal. It appears all the dies didn't screw in all the way as I had problems with COL today with some rounds!! The COL was too long and I had some minor problems loading the mag. Rounds shot ok but what a struggle!! I will be more careful when loading a different caliber in the turret press.  Craig

Hey Ken, Yeah I too have check and double check things I do but this just got away from me it appears!! I could set up the older Lyman t press with the 40 cal as I am only using it for decaping spent primers. Something to think about. BTW I am liking to shoot the 40 cal once I got used to the recoil.  Craig

40 cal is hard as I use the same dies for 10mm!! You would think i would have too readjust every time I use the die so I don't know why I didn't seem too this time????  Craig

I feel you brother.
I've been reloading for about 10 years, and in that time I have found that I have developed a couple of habits.

The first during my set up I never have the radio on for any of the process.

The second is after I make a batch of rounds I will run every single cartridge through a case gauge. I'm not positive why but I do it every time.

Last I will use a FCD on every round too because I don't trim the length.

Best wishes and Safe reloading all.

I do the same with the case gage. It?s rare for me to find one that doesn?t drop in correctly, but does make me feel better
