Title: 5.7x28, more fun than a barrel of monkeys
Post by: Kenk on March 30 2025 04:16:17 PM MDT
Greetings and welcome back everyone 😀
I've been shooting my PSA Rock 5.7 a ton lately, and wow, I can't get enough of it, the funny part is, I thought the exact same thing back when I first got started with 10's. My plan is to start loading them, and will follow up more in the reloading area.
Take Care

Ken

I've been around a few 5.7's but never have fired one to the best of my recollection.  I always thought they were more akin to 22 magnum magnums  :-X

Hey John, the only real world example of the  effectiveness of the 5.7x28 I know about was the Fort Hood tragedy back in 2009, and it didn't end well, very very tragic

I would not turn down a 5.7 if someone is giving them away. I like the idea that it is the 22 magnum magnum.  Definitely more than a 22 Magnum as the 5.7 will deliver from a pistol barrel what the 22 magnum needs a rifle barrel to achieve.

But the completely unique cartridge, it's long length for an auto pistol cartridge and various legal implications of come ammo detract from it for me.  I like versatility and the 5.7X28 is outclassed by the 22 TCM in my mind.

Excited that it is appealing to you.  Also please share you experiences when you start handloading it.

Yep, there are a few types of 5.7 ammo like  Elite ammunition's Black Dragon Fang that would potentially raise the eyebrows of a prosecuting attorney, kinda like folks that carry those Rest in Peace rd's. The stuff I carry, Hornady's Critical Defense is pretty tame compared to those, yet appears to well in gel tests and for velocity, something like 1,810 fps. I do have some of the FN SS198LF green tip, but would likely be considered questionable as well
