Title: still looking for brass
Post by: cmemiss on June 18 2013 04:09:22 PM MDT
I've been looking for some reasonably priced 10 mm brass.  Found a little last month in Louisiana (250 new Winchester) but have been hoarding those since changeover form .45 to 10 is a real pita.  Anyway, Midway lets you sign up to be notified in some items come into stock so I signed up for some Starline 10 mm.  Well, today at 11:03 CDT I got an email that they had some 10' in 500 round bulk packages.  Didn't get to the computer until 2:30 and you guessed it, they were out.  I knew you had to move quickly, but never dreamed you had to camp on the terminal to get this stuff.  Hope the hoarders and gougers rot in a warm place.

It will get better, if you buy some loaded ammo at a good price then you will have some brass to play with.  8)

I think a lot of those in-stock reports get sent out erroneously

Count me in on looking for brass.  I used to have a bunch of brand new Starline...ugh.  Oh well someday some will pop up somewhere...I think.

The last time midway got in a large shipment of starline the nickel was available for 3 days before it sold out. They should get one soon

Odd how Winchester Brass is almost twice the price as Starline
Could it be THAT much better ?

If I had a choice, I would take Winchester brass and pay the extra. Never had a split Winchester case in 10mm, can't say the same for Starline. As many have reported before, the Winchester brass can tarnish some, but they still shoot. I still love Starline brass and will continue to use it too.

Steve, thanks for the heads-up, but checked all 3 and while some (2) indicate they have 10s when you add to cart, or call they don't have it.  Guess, I'll wait for Midway, again.

Did you ever look at Ammobrasstrader? I have traded many a different caliber case for 10mm's, cases I picked up for free at my local range.

I've got a guy willing to sell me some, but the problem is that it's 1x Federal "FC" stamped...and I've not heard good things about it.  Is this brass still crud or was that just a thing with older brass?

FC brass is OK you may find a few split on the initial firing depending on the chambers they were shot it.

I traded for 1350 of them as shot in the MP5-10mm and during my reconditioning I found 50 that were split... :-\

I believe that much of my reloaded brass is FC. I don't recall any special problems with them.

For those more knowledgeable than I, I bought some once fired off Gunbroker and it came in the mail.  I'm finding a lot of PMC brass, Starline (which is good!)  but I'm finding a lot of "Midway" stamped 10mm brass.

So I'm wondering, what's the deal with it? I'm assuming it's from MidwayUSA, but mainly, does anybody know who makes the brass?  It seems like good brass and I know Starline will custom headstamp brass if a place orders enough of it, so could this be the deal.

Oh, Starline is taking 10mm brass orders again, I put my order in yesterday.

These are from MIDWAY - Midway Arms Inc., Columbia, MO.
Midway Arms Inc

Columbia, MO 65203

And this...So you will know exactly. ;D
MidwayUSA
5875 WEST VAN HORN TAVERN RD.

I don't know if Star Line made it.  ??? I believe they had contracted it from outside source with their own headstamp.

Post by: 45BBH on June 22 2013 04:36:52 PM MDT
That solves that!

I have read that Starline did make "Midway" stamped brass, so it's likely the case here, which means they're good cases.  They look like Starline brass, even the lettering is the same.  I read this too about "Midway" stamped brass:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?59105-Speaking-of-Midway-Midway-brass&s=66b0546db8996b49b3fa70254706febf

Read somewhere else that it takes an order of at least 100,000 cases to get custom headstamps.

This might have been where you read about the 100K?  I posted this over at GT...

Well I did contact Star Line about the producing brass marked 9x25Dillon just to see how that would go...here is the answer I received!

QuoteThe minimum quantity for a run of 9x25 Dillon with a small primer pocket would be 100,000 pieces. The price would be $136/per 1,000 and there would be a $750 tooling fee for the headstamp (What the headstamp reads would be your choice). This would be straight, un-necked brass.

Regards,

Hunter Pilant
Media Relations/Technical Support

Even trying to do a group buy would be tough to obtain 100 buyers getting 1000 pieces each...

$13,600.00 100K brass
+ $750.00 Tooling for head stamp
$14,300.00 Total cost

I'd do this Only if I win the Lottery!

45BBH,

Thanks for the heads up, just ordered 500 from Starline.  I waited a year for a nice brass mold so I guess waiting 20-25 days for an order of brass will be easy.  I'm surprised the price is actually lower than Midway by the time you figure handling and shipping.

No problem guys, glad it helped those of us looking for brass.   I just happened to look on their website and although backordered, they were taking orders and they said it should ship out around mid July.  I almost ordered 1000pcs but I don't think I'll need that many.   I bought 500pcs of .45 Super a couple of years back and haven't shot much of it, so I figure 500 should last a while.  I bought over 400 pcs of once fired off of GunBroker, the same batch where I found mostly "Midway" stamped brass, but I did find something cool.

I was separating the brass and noticed that all the Starline brass sure did look extra clean, well it dawned on me and I look at them, and every one of the 113 pcs of Starline brass are brand new, never shot!  I can't complain about that!

I feel so priveledged. While I only have like 5-6 shot 10mm cases, I have SO many already reloaded I don't feel any need for more cases. I just did a batch of like 1000 reloaded 10mm's not too long ago.

Now to get to their younger brothers, 40 cal S&W! Must have 600-700 empty cases there.

They're ok, but said to have been manufactured for them by Starline
It's getting harder and harder to find
Currently, I'm using their .44sp, but don't trust it for the higher pressure loads

I was just going to mention the same.  Just put in my order too a couple days ago (3000 count).  They're saying currently backordered till an estimation of 7-15-13.  The shipping is more/less FREE (on my order they tacked on $4.25 labeled as Shipping Insurance, no big deal to me).  If you buy a minimum of 1000 it comes out to less than .16 cents per brand new brass cartridge case.  Can't beat that! 8)

Me too.  I'm happy.  Though it doesn't matter much since I'm still waiting on bullets (XTP) to become available.  Still happy I'll have the brass in hand though for when the bullets do become available.

Just checked the Starline website on the off chance backorders were being taken.  Not surprisingly, NO.

https://www.starlinebrass.com/order-online/all-cases.cfm (https://www.starlinebrass.com/order-online/all-cases.cfm)

I think the positive thing to take away from this is that they just recently were accepting the backorders that a couple of us were able to make good on.  So even though they aren't taking backorders now, I would like to think it won't be more than a few weeks before they'll be accepting the backorders again.

BTW;  When's the last time anyone saw Winchester brand 10mm Auto brass available?  I wonder is they even still have it listed in their current to-do list.

It seems that no one has Virgin Winchester 10mm available (and most say "no backorders")

OK, so, if I'm asking $90.00 for 250 pieces of VIRGIN (brand new) Winchester (Brass) 10mm Cases, that's somehow a bad thing ?
I bought it from MidwayUSA a little while back, and they are currently asking $32.49 plus shipping per 100 (if it was EVEN available)
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/491531/winchester-reloading-brass-10mm-auto-bag-of-100
If my math is correct, at that price, the 250 pieces would cost $81.25 plus shipping
SO, given that, the $8.75 I'm asking to ship, is somehow completely out of line ! ? !

If I'm wrong here, PLEASE.....feel free to let me know

Yeah, but that requires buying at least the 8000 cases or more.  I don't understand what they mean about buying at least 3 drums worth.  Is that just 8000, or is that 8000 times 3?

According to the Starline rep I talked to, 3 drums are not required to purchase nickel or custom (tooling requirement orders are different, and depend on the details).  If you order/buy 3 or more drums, the order will be "discounted" less than the single drum price.  The drum prices are per 1,000 cases, multiplied by the count of cases per drum.  They "estimate" 8,000 cases per drum, so the price will be approximately 8 x $169.50 per drum.  The other issue with drum quantities may be shipping (I didn't ask about that).  8,000 Starline nickel cases will weigh about 85 pounds, not including the "drum", or whatever container they may ship in.  I have no idea what size it may be.  Anyway, it may require a freight shipment, vs. regular UPS or other shipper.  Starline's regular orders include shipping, while bulk or custom orders probably do not.

In any case, the discount for "bulk" orders is likely significant, because some outlets offer them in bulk (500+) for about the same price per case, plus shipping, and some of them are shipping included.

Yet still I wonder if you went ahead and spent the money, whether you could recoup most of the cost be selling say bags of 500 online. Maybe even make a profit? I mean that's probably exactly what Midway does.
Title: Re: still looking for brass
Post by: DM1906 on July 08 2013 11:41:43 AM MDT
It's certainly possible, especially now with availability being the major issue.  I've bought many Starline nickel cases from Midway over the years, and none of them were packaged by Starline (I've bought a bunch of non-nickel from Starline to compare with).  All were packaged after delivery.  Midway bulk packages many products, so they have the facility to do it.  It's a lot of work, and work costs money.  I prefer Starline nickel over just about every other, in several calibers.  Right now, they're very hard to come by at a reasonable price, in any caliber.  I can find them, but I'm not paying 3 or 4 times their realistic value, as they are being sold by some "gougers".  I don't mind paying a little more for hard to get items, but this is ridiculous.  I'm not that desperate.

Yeah..Except there are very, very few 10mm shooters around.

And all the 40 S&W at Midway is backordered  or out of stock.  So, someone is buying it all up.

Whew, still too much. But the only new brass I've ever bought was even harder to find boxer primed 7.62X25 and 7.62X64R. And I only bought the 7.62X54R because a place online was selling it for $30/100. I could buy some now and buy some later stretching out the cost over months.
