I tried to find a gel test with this load, but didn't find any. My question is how effective is that meplat on the TMJ loaded in the Underwood ammo? I'm sure it will deform some, but at what distance? I would use them for neck/head shots or both shoulders of a critter. ( Maybe a car door in Zombieland) Any of you guys actually done any testing with this bullet profile? Thanks
I'm not sure which TMJ Underwood is using but the Speer 200 gr. TMJ has a MEPLAT of 0.2480" (with concave base).
I doubt there will be much deformation unless it encounters heavy bone.
I think, I would still use the Hornady 200gr XTP at 1200 fps or even 1240-50 fps. In my opinion, its a tough bullet and will open up to 0.65" - 0.70" and drive deeply into or even through the target animal.
Thanks Shadow...so far, I haven't found any full power 200 XTP loads. Well, I have seen some 200gr HPR that is supposed to be loaded with them. I just don't know how fast they are going. I'm also interested in DoubleTaps 200 Nosler; at their slower speed, I wonder how well they would do on bad guys/hogs. Any idea?
Here you go for 200's:

If PBR has stock that is a good one to get! I think Kevin Underwood might have both available right now and 5% off with the discount code: bigbuck5
Thanks Pard.
RevJim,
There are some that love them for hunting. A guy on a Marlin forum (can't remember what his signon is) loves the Speer TMJ in a 444 Marlin for hunting elk & moose. He swears by them. I do, however, with they would make them with a bigger meplat.
