Title: Coonan 357
Post by: EdMc on July 16 2012 12:21:56 PM MDT
Anyone have any comments or opinions on these? The original models.......a local gunstore has one for sale. The thought crossed my mind to ask about a trade on a AR of mine they're trying to sell on consignment. I sorta like different, within reason. :)

I noticed these this very morning as I was perusing the 1999 Gun Digest Annual while doing some...Um...business.

Interesting guns.  Not sure I would want one but I would certainly be glad to shoot someone else's to say I had pulled the trigger.

I did sell my AR a few years back to finance my M1 Garands.  And I love my Garands, but I miss my AR.  Never sell a gun.  With one exception (Ruger P90) I wish I had them all back.

Yeah, I keep a reading stash in my 'office', too. ;)

The AR is a Colt in 7.62X39.....Bought it back when Clinton said we couldn't have them anymore. Anyway, I never fired the thing...maybe 'cause it was my issue rifle in the Army? I don't know..... In basic we trained with the M-14.....I have the civie version M1A now.

I like the P90 I have. Not as pretty as my Colts but good bang for the buck. Weren't they originally designed to be 10mm? I once read that in one of Ayoobs books.

They seem neat. I wouldn't mind owning one!

Just general opinion here;  The Coonan 357 Mag is near the top of my "want" list.  Certainly don't need one.  I think they look very nice with what seems to be great fit and finish.  Also I like that they come with two different weight recoil springs, one being for 357 Mag and the other for 38 Spcl.  Reviews on them sound good from what I've come across, though I believe they do require a break in period before being considered trustworthy for self defense.

"they come with two different weight recoil springs,"

That's the 'new' Coonans.........anyway, it turned out the pistol was also on consignment so that was the end of that idea.

I recently sold my Old model to my brother.  It was NIB.  He has been shooting everything in it.  All bullet weights, even 38s!  No jams, or hicups.  He loves it!

Don't tell me that......I'd let the idea go but now have a little extra gun money and it may still be there.  :P

Why is it that  gun lists only grow, yet never shrink? :(

Good question, my wife asks me a variant of the same question quite often. :D Lately, I've sold the older, seldom used to buy new guns of interest. And, there is a gun show in town this weekend. Who knows what I might find............. 8)

I'm finding the prices at the gun shows in my area (Costa Mesa and Ontario, California) are on the rise. When I add the gas to get there, parking and the entrance fee (not including a hot dog and soda) and the increase in prices it's just not really worth it.

I haven't been to a gun show in years. Not long ago I heard many dealers weren't coming back to the one here due to lack of sales. The economy has been in the toilet for quite awhile in this area. Anyway, I'm mostly looking for powders I can't find locally. Maybe I'll get lucky, maybe not. ;D

In my area, gun shows are not what they used to be.  Just like pawn shops are not what they used to be.

We used to go to both to get a bargin.  Now they are nothing more than retail outlets.

Sure every now and then, after hours or a day or days of hunting at either, you MAy score a deal.  But if your time was really "free" at the time, then good for you.  But like most of us now a days, we are rushed at our gun hunting because we have so many other things to do; so the bargin may not be such a bargin due to the sacrifice of time given up.

I guess what I am trying to say is, gun shows and pawn shops are not as "fun" anymore when everything is so overpriced.  So why waste my valuable time?

True most places today, they all have access to the internet and check prices on auction sites et al. The seem to lock on to the 'asking price'  ;). The price on the Coonan was 1200.00 and it's not NIB by any means. Typical...

The gun show was as I'd heard......used to cover the whole floor of the Coliseum itself, now much smaller in a separate room of the convention center. No powder selection....almost none, actually.....plenty of 'do dahs' to hang off ARs, some over priced handguns and some tables of old ammo of no interest to me. No tables of old parts, etc. Like your second point, just a complete waste of my time and $8.00 to get in. I won't be back......

You're right ED, reloading equipment and supplies have decreased as well as parts.  And my Big pet peave, is if I arrive late on Sunday and half the dealers start weasling out and breaking down their displays 2-3 hours early!  >:(      I have a very good memory.  Next time I come and a purchase is between two dealers; I buy from the one that stuck around and supported my town.

One other thing that is getting old; the model helicopters flying around, electric cigar lighters, rubber band guns, jewelry - the whole carnival crap.

Amen!

I ante up the $8 once a year or if I have something very specific that I think I might have a high probability of finding.  Otherwise, I hit the gun stores or range on gun show weekend, since it helps draw the crowds away from these activities.

I do a lot of my shopping on Calguns. Great deals, good people and local drive.

Several of our local 'gun stores' are more hobby type businesses. Open three to four days a week and on the gun show 'circuit' weekends. When open their hours are like 12-6pm. Several were at the show yesterday, without them, it really would have been a pathetic turnout. ;D Flying helicopters would have been of more interest.......I did mention I was disappointed?  :D

+1 to that! I get real tired of all the trinkets and junk that have nothing to do with guns. I wonder who buys that stuff?

It seems the marketers, or marketeers? for that crap think their buyers will be the kids and wives and girlfriends of the gun guys.  But I rarely see anyone buying any of that junk.  They must be selling or they wouldn't keep coming back?  ???
