Maybe we should label these 2nd Gen?  ;D  I think these are not the good originals and not the current pretty weak sauce rounds  :o

5 shot averages

EAA Limited Pro 4.75" 1230.5 FPS/ 589 LBS
EAA Super Match 4.75" 1281 FPS/ 638 LBS

Very interesting results from these... Any way to tell how old these are? I have some slightly older Silvertips laying around here somewhere that I think might be this "2nd gen" iteration versus the newer, less stellar, offering currently available. Always appreciate you guys' work!

It's hard to date them. One big difference is the boxes. Maybe this weekend I will weigh them all and see if that reveals anything.

I don't think I have any of the newer silver boxes. Mine are the white and one used Styrofoam for the tray.

I seen Tnoutdoors9 test these and they came in at measly 1175 fps or so average, really really downgraded from the advertised muzzle velocity, which is a shame! I bought some component 175gr silver tips a while back and
loaded these in 40 S&W just to see how they'd do. At 8.2gr Longshot and a 3.5 barrel M&P 40 compact, my 5 shot average was 1140 fps. That damn near equals these loads in a 10mm!

Shadow,

What/who's scale is that?  I'm in the market for a new one and I like the looks of that one.  Thanks, Tracy

That was a cheap clearance Frankford Arsenal scale $29, it can fluctuates and needs rezeroing constantly, and only shows the even numbered tents 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8   While it finds unknown weights fast and somewhat accurately to the even number 1/10's I would not use this to load with...  I use my Beam Scale because it is much better for very precise powder charges.
I do use this digital to verify what the bean scale is showing and they do match up.

There are other digital scales that are probably better suited than this one.

Shadow:

I liked the ballistics quoted by Winchester, but are they being realized in a 5" 1911-type pistol? If they are, it would make for a decent deer load. I remember the originals. Are the STHP  bullets available for handloading? I would like to see how well they would work ahead of about 12 3/4 grains of AA#7. This would be wonderful!

The Silvertips used be be readily available for handloaders in the past, prices jumped up quite a bit, haven't seen them in quite some time as bulk...

According to testing by Intercooler as documented in the factory loads spreadsheet the Winchester Silvertip load made 1210 fps from a 4.75" barrel.

I'd like to see how the STHP would function driven at 1350 fps. Would terminal performance be sufficient to explore their use for both atipersonnel and/or hunting purposes.

Any opinions?

I think it would not perform notably better than a Nosler JHP, Gold Dot or XTP.

It is a cataloged item, but out of stock most places.

Perhaps we can arrange for one of the major loaders to aarange for this to fly from a 5" barrel at 1350 fps. Handloaders at Midway revealed high praise for the bullet at these velocities, expanding to .8"! This should provide outstanding perfromance on people, deer and medium-sized game. An added 100 fps over the original published velocities couldn't hurt.

I have an older box (I assume, since the price was $12.50) that's white, with a red plastic tray that has a styrofoam insert. Out of a LW 5.15" chrono read 1,221.

A gel test would be nice. Also I think these new batches of Silver Tips might be closer to their advertised velocities.

I want another box of WW-STHP to put through my IAI Javalina. That 7" barrel would certainly "bring out the best" of the round. (dead deer, boar,  medium sized-game). Me likey!  8)
