I know this topic has been brought up somewhere on this forum about magnum primers being safe or unsafe .Anyhow I went to the range with my son in law and had about 245 rounds of reloaded second time Starline brass 10grs of longshot CCI standard large 300 pistol primers 155 gr Hornady xtps with an Caol of 1.257 and no issues no FTF's no smileys, flattened primers, nor bulging out of my G20 SF and then I went to fire one with all of the same specs but with one difference a CCI 350 magnum primers and this what I got after first shot and I immediately stopped
What did you get?
The suspense is killings me. What happened???
I suppose Halfglocked had issue posting his picture. The easiest way is to host the picture on one of the sites like Photobucket or even Facebook. Then paste the url while using the picture button.
Posting pictures or links see this info; http://10mm-firearms.com/questionssuggestions/posting-pictures-or-url-links/ (http://10mm-firearms.com/questionssuggestions/posting-pictures-or-url-links/)
Yes waiting for the picture or at least a description of what happened... ::)
I have to wonder if the primer blew out...I have found loose primer pockets on Starline Brass especially reused cases. Pass-Through sizing has shown to help a little with this issue in my testing.
Yeah Shadow I did try to post pictures but it kept kicking it back
Saying it was using to much mb so it flattened the primer and ruptured. The case in half so I called it quits for magnum primers.
The casing itself may have been damaged/tearing inside and not visible on the outside...that just happen to be the loading that caused it to fail. ???
Do you pass through size your cases?
Have seen higher amounts of LongShot in loadings with the same bullet, not sure which primer was being used. I just don't see that much difference with the 350 CCI primers over the 300 CCI.
Yes sir I size them when I deprive the cases and check with calipers but from now on I'll be sticking with standard I didn't try the remaining 4 loads I was happy however with the standard primers and the function and ecspicially the performance I don't have a chrono but the accuracy was great about a little above and 1" at 10 yards and 21\2 at 25 yards was good enough for me then for fun we filled up empty containers of 4#protien containers with dirt and set them up at 14 yards and never recovered on hornady the blew huge exit holes through the containers
Hello halfglocked,
May I ask what powder you were using with the magnum primers?
longshot 10.00grains
Interesting, could be why non of the manuals (Hornady, Hodgdon, Lyman) I have list Longshot for the 155 XTP - unpredictable results? Just wondering?
Thank you for your reply.
That's very interesting. I have some older Speer data that recommends that CCI 350 Primers be used with a max load of HS-6, 10.5 and HS-7, 12.0. These were test fired in an S&W 1006. Perhaps as has been suggested, they are not appropriate for that particular powder.
The source is: " The Complete Reloading Manual for the 10mm & 40 S&W" 2008 edition.
I have been using se powder bullet and now CCI large standard primers with no issues.
