Title: Megastar
Post by: DocHolliday on October 01 2012 04:35:05 PM MDT
Just "inherited" a Interarms Megastar in 10mm and am learning the history of the gun and the cost of shooting a cartridge not embraced by the masses.

Anybody know of an options for .40 conversions??

Looks like I may have to become a reloader.

Thanks for any replies.

I don't know of any options for a .40 conversion.

If you aren't concerned about making true 10mm power in plinking, there are ammo options to be found online that will not break the bank.  You can find ammo for around $40/100 or $20/box.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/browse/browse.aspx?c=95&s=940

You can cut that price in half again reloading plated bullets.

The real benefit of reloading is maximizing the 10mm's potential.  It ain't no 40 S&W, and anyone who says it is doesn't know what the 10mm can do.

That is a good catch on the Megastar.  I understand they are well built guns.

welcome to the forum.

The Megastar, like the LAR Grizzly, is so massive and heavy it makes the 10mm a joy to shoot.  Try it you will like it.  Down side is parts and mags are very difficult to come by.

Is it the starvelle finish?  (Looks like stainless but it is a nickle plate.)

On one hand I hate to say it, because I want it :o but the megastar is a great pistol.  In my opinion better than the Smiths.

Yup. I took pictures of one for a member here who bought it. In checking it out I found it more robust than the 3rd Gen Smiths.

Holy smokes, they're going for more than 3rd generation Smiths. That's pretty awesome.

I was thinking about putting in a bid on this one.  It got way past my limit before I had a chance.  This is the first NIB one that I have ever seen.

Have they been going this high?

They are a tank of a gun. The one I scoped out for a member that bought one at my local store looked great.  If it looks really good with only dulling of the surface/finish, you can do it up very nicely in any flavor. Given the low price he paid for it, customization would have been just icing for a beastly 10mm.

I picked up one last week. I probably paid too much but I wanted it so I got it. It looks to be in nice shape but I haven't had much time to do anything with it because my mother
is in the hospital. I hope to get a chance to shoot it next week. I see the NIB Megastar on Gun Broker closed at $2100 and it was still "Reserve Not Met".

To a collector it might be worth it, but in 2015 you get near the same thing in the new Sig P220 with a warranty.

The Megastar is high cap with a 14 round mag. The Sig can't compete with that.

At least not yet.
Title: Re: Megastar
Post by: Intercooler on July 19 2015 05:12:04 PM MDT
Not the capacity. The function, heft, options and features are light years ahead of the Megastar.

Yes they are. But the Sig cannot compete with the Star's capacity.

No need my friend. I agree with you the Sig is better in all respects except for capacity.

With 14+1 rounds as compared to the Sig's 8+1 rounds, the Sig can't come close to the Megastar in the capacity department.

But given the choice, I would by a Sig first for all the reasons you mentioned. And I wouldn't pay two grand for a Megastar either. I remember back in the nineties when they were going for less than $500. Thanks but no thanks.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I got a Megastar last week. I took it to the range today with my SIG P220 and my Rock Island Tac II FS. The SIG and the RIA feel a little better in my hands. My hands are not very big and the Megastar grip is wide to accommodate the double stack mag. Trigger reach on The Megastar was fine even with my fairly short fingers. The RIA continues to amaze me in how well I shoot it. I just recently got it and it is the only 1911 I have ever owned. Do all 1911's shoot this well? This was the fourth range trip for the SIG but the first time I shot it well. Groups were almost as small as the RIA. The Megastar groups were only slightly larger. The extra weight of the Megastar really helps tame the recoil of the 10mm ( I was using a handload of a 180gr FMJ flat nose over 9.3 gr of Longshot). If parts and service were not an issue, I think I would take the Megastar over the SIG. The trigger on the Megastar has a lot of pre-travel but has a nice break. I would expect the break on the SIG to get better as I shoot it more. It currently has only 200 rounds through it. In DA the triggers feel similar but I rarely shoot in the DA mode. Right now I would give a slight preference to the Megastar but I do that from the standpoint that I consider myself more of a collector than a shooter. By the way, I also took out a S&W 1066 but only fired 5 rounds in it due to 4 extraction failures in those five rounds. The gun functioned perfectly last time out. That gives me something to do tonight!

Thanks for the range report!

While I'm sure the MegaStar is a tank, I'd be worried about breaking something given the absence of any Star factory parts- and/or service-support.

Unfortunately, it appears to be the same way for the S&W 10XX-series pistols, unless you were prudent enough to stock up on critical parts when they were still plentiful. Back then, you (or your 'smith) could phone-in a quick order to S&W's customer service dept., and it would be mailed out the next day.

Now, if something breaks on my Colt DE, like say, the extractor, at least it's easily replaceable, as 10mm 1911 parts are ubiquitous.

Two grand for something they don't make anymore is reasonable if you want it. If I had the bucks available I would do it. Same for a Bren Ten. Collectibles aren't valued the same as utility guns.

The Sig intrigues me as does the Rock Island but I'm holding on to the dream that the Sig may come in double stack eventually.

I really feel they will. There would be no reason for them not to. Their current offerings are selling quite well but there are plenty of guys just like you and me that are holding out for the double stack versions. I've always liked their guns. I've never freaked out and became a Sig fan boy or anything. If they the model I want, it will be my first Sig. Same thing goes to Smith if they do an M&P 10mm.

* * * Same thing goes to Smith if they do an M&P 10mm.

Now that Sig has made a bold 4-pistol foray into 10mm land, there're a lot of us 10mm fans looking to S&W to bring out at least one beefy 10mm M&P model - since unlike Sig, Smith actually has hands-on experience at building semi-autos that can handle full-throttle 10mm ammo.

Despite the FBI's later request to Federal to give them a downloaded 180gn 10mm load, Smith designed and tested its first 10XX-series prototypes around the full-power Norma loads of the day.

But the real consequence from Sig's initiative is there's just no telling  - yet  - what other gun-makers will be prompted into producing a new 10mm model or two ...  Ruger?  CZ?

Maybe Sig's effort will actually spur Vltor into completing its reboot of the  Bren Ten by the 2016 SHOT show, and we'll finally see the two-tone Legacy model hit the market. (That's the model Vltor's Presudent, Abrams, referenced in his otherwise corporate-speak "Update" memo of Jan. 2015 on the company's website.)

Stay tuned ....

Yes I saw the 3 that were on gunbroker all at the same time.  2 ended by buy it now within 6 hours of being posted.  The other one is the one that has been referenced here in this thread except that it was going through gunbroker for at least the second time.  I'm kicking myself because I could have hit the BIN on one of the Megastar's for 1300.00 but I had never seen one for sale and I had no idea what the value was!!!
So anyway enjoy your Megastar and if you ever want to sell or trade it send me a private message or smoke signals. LOL
