Title: gp loadings
Post by: will965 on January 02 2016 05:57:22 PM MST
Gents,
Went to the local fun show today and scored some hornady 200gr xtps,. I been loading 8.5g long shot as my general purpose load with 200 grainers...is this a good strong load for self defense/deer/woods walking? This load seems to work great with my 200 g rnfp copper and lead powder coated bullets. Anyone else use this and is it a power load? Might have to be used on some problems coyotes I had issues with last night....oh ya, gonna be shot out my glock 40..thanks

I have used more but my guns have been setup (22lb non captive springs) for the loads I use...with that said I use 9.2 grains (1225 fps) - 9.4 grains (1245 fps) of LongShot for the 200 XTP's.

These are hot loads and some have shot hotter loadings some with consequences... ???

Excellent... Glad I can go a little hotter. I been using regular large pistol primers, read that should use magnum primers on slower powders, I use strictly longshot on my 10mms. So hopefully those work.

Be sure you use quality brass, work you way up from lower charges to observe how you firearm handles the impulses.  A CHRONY is nice to check you results as you work up.

BTW when working at these levels of performance hand weight and verify each and every loading...this is not for progressive loading without verifying you exact load.  I even double check on different scales to be sure they are the same.

Be safe!  You are your own quality control...

For the 10mm and the 44, the Dillon 550b has been replaced with my old hornady lock and load single..😁

Hodgdons Reloading Center shows their max load for a 200 grain Hornady FMJ at 8.2 grains of Longshot for 35,000 psi which gives you a little wiggle room for the SAAMI spec of 37,500 psi. I assume the FMJ and XTP data are interchangeable as the current Hornady manual only lists the HAP and XTP.

The excellent and much appreciated factory pulldown section of this 10mm Firearms web site shows DoubleTap using 8.2 grains of Longshot in their 200 grain WFNGC loads and Parabellum Research using 8.4 grains of Longshot in their 200 grain Beartooth WFNGC load.

Out of my G40, I've chronographed my handloaded DoubleTap 200 grainers at 1250 fps using 8.2 grains Longshot and the Beartooth 200 grain WFNGC bullets with the same powder charge at 1242 fps. Longshot definitely scoots em along. I just wish it did so with better accuracy.

got a great deal over the weekend at the local gun show on 180 gr gold dots.... I think I'm going to throw them behind 9.8 grains of long shot and 9.2 grains and see how they shoot. I think the 9.8 is going to be nice and hot out of my 6 inch barrel Glock 40. Might try to borrow a chrono..

You may want to stop a 9.6 with the 180's any more may cause SMILES in the brass...
I know that some have used more but the safety factor is gone pecan!  Individual hand weighing checking is a must!
Be safe! ;)

I been reading there is nota ton of difference between 9.2 and 9.5( most I will go) might just stick with my tried and true 9.2 for 180 HP..and I always hand measure my 10mm loads and use my single stage press..can't be to careful..
