Title: Short-barreled 10mm Pistols
Post by: gunfan on October 08 2012 09:36:39 PM MDT
I can't see any reasonable advantage (other than concealability) to short-barreled pistols chambered for the 10mm Auto Pistol Cartridge.
A short-barreled pistol simply sacrifices too much velocity for any perceived advantages. A 4.6" barrel is what I see as a practical minimum barrel length for extracting reasonable performance from the round.

Comments? Opinions?

if your using it for hunting I would agree.  But for SD I wouldn't want to get shot with my STI 4" with Underwood 180 JHP @ 1300fps

Just curious, what's the actual velocity of that load out of that 4" STI?

Even concealability is questionable.  I have a much harder time concealing the double stack magazine grip than the slide/barrel.  That is why I like the VIP/CCO style 1911.  And I think a Glock 20 upper on a 29 lower would be good carry combo as well.

In general I see 50-80 fps difference between my full size witness - 4.5" barrel and my Glock 29.  That is comparing the average of 10 shots from each gun.

In my testing between the various length barreled guns chambered in 10mm there are some variances in velocity, however 30-100 fps isn't that much difference.  Some powders show less with Power Pistol & IMR800X being less variation from the short barrels.  I still like the G29 carried in the waist band "JS IWB Holster" http://www.jsholsters.com/ (http://www.jsholsters.com/)  this holster hugs the gun nicely, lays in close to the body and the klydex belt loop holds securely.

I think a well made shoulder rig would be even better for carry if the threat level were low.  This takes in mind things like riding in the vehicle, bathroom use thruout the day.  Having to remove you weapon/hoster while going to the restroom can be problematic at times.  Some people have actually dropped the guns, forgot them in the stall...Not Good!

If I'm hunting I use the longer barreled 10xx pistols.   ;D

Like shadow, I see less variation with certain powders.  AA#9 has been great, usually dropping only about 30-40 fps between a 1911 and a Glock 29.

And, until my CCO build is done, the Glock 29 is my go to gun for carry.  About 2 days a week the 1911 makes it into the mix, but it is just plain heavy.  I definitely know I have a gun on those days.
