Title: Standard Velocity .22 ammo test
Post by: Geeman on May 22 2016 04:19:17 PM MDT
I went to play today with my match chambered T/C Encore pistol with a selection of sub-sonic .22's from lower price to very expensive to see how well I could shoot with it.  I'm a bit out of practice shooting pistol off a rest, but nothing like 35 5-shot-groups to knock some rust off.

Firearm was a t/c Encore with a match chambered Bullberry 16-1/4" barrel topped with a Sightron 8x32 scope.  All shot at 50 yards.

In the order shot....

CCI Standard Velocity (paper box) Average of 5 - 5-shot groups.
.5" Average

SK Standard Plus Average of 5 - 5-shot groups
.412" Average

Wolf Match Extra - Average of 5 - 5-shot groups
.466" Average

Norma Match - Average of 5 - 5-shot groups  (I was getting a lot of vertical and much of it was me)
.554" Average (Repeated the ammo over again later)

Eley Match Black Box - Average of 3 - 5-shot groups
.37" Average

Lapua Midas+ - Average of 2 - 5-shot groups
.56" Average (If I took away one badly placed shot the average was more like .4")

Eley Tenex (Only shot one group as this stuff is over $20/box)
.3"

Norma Match (Repeated) Average of 5 - 5-shot groups
.412" Average

My worst group spread .8" at 50 yards, while my best was .3" groups that I repeated three times over the session.  Lots of times I was looking through the scope at little one hole groups after three shots, and even though I knew better, I always put to more down range to screw it up :D

My take on the above....

CCI Standard Velocity is pretty decent ammo for the buck.  MOA in a .22 isn't bad at all.

SK Standard plus - That lot shoots REALLY well in that pistol.  My best group ever was shot with it (not today) and was on the order of .1"

Wolf Match Extra - Supposed to be better than the above SK standard plus, but it hasn't been in the lots I've had.

Norma Match - This is the first I shot it, and the first series was hampered by my shooting.  The .8" group was in this series.  The second series was much better.  Over all I'm pretty pleased, and I was able to shoot two .3" groups in the second try with the ammo.

All the above are less than $10, some quite a bit less.

The following are all north of $15

Lapua Midas+,  I don't think I'll be buying another box.  Expensive and in this gun it shoots alot like my $6 SK Standard plus.

This pistol LIKES the high buck Eley offerings. I'm not likely to shoot a lot of it because a case runs $1600 for the black box and over $2000 for the red box Tenex, but I like it none the less.  Its fun, no doubt ;D
