Title: Hornady 180gr HTP with Bluedot?
Post by: Mity2 on November 28 2016 06:38:35 PM MST
I have been contemplating about making some load using Bluedot.
I have crap load of 180gr XTP bullets, so I'm gonna use that.

According to my Lyman 49th edition book, its recommended max load for Bluedot with 180gr jhp is 10.3gr @around 1133fps.

But according to Alliant Powder's website, they list load which is 11gr of BlueDot @ around 1295fps.
SO which is safe limit? Is this mean that 10.3gr on Lyman is like lower end of known limit(just be in safe ide), where as manufacture list more realistic upper limit?
I have done 10gr with 180gr, which worked without any issues. So I'm thinking may be I'll try by starting at 10.5gr and see?
Now, I'm going to be shooting these out of my LW barreled Glock G20, and my Colt DE.

I run Bluedot with the 180 xtp's at 10.4 grs.....

It's a very accurate load for my stock G20.   But with all loading, you should work you way up slowly AND know what to look for in pressure signs

FWIW I've shot 11g BD under a 180gr XTP a jazillion times. Would you trust data from the manufacture of the powder or some other company? :).  (that said, still do your safe work ups).

I use that same load with 180gr XTP's, Xtreme HP's and Star JHP's.
Saying it's very accurate is an understatement.

I have to concur 10.4 has been my accuracy load since 1990 when I work up the 170 JHP the 180 JHP and my cast 175 grain.
Even out to 130 yards it was fantastic!  ;D

I load 11 gr of Blue Dot with 180 gr bullets, and run them through my Colt Delta Elite and Kimber with out any problems. Very good power :)

So those of you with 11gr of bluedot, where you seat your bullet at? Standard 1.25"? or longer?

I just loaded 10.3gr of bluedot with XTP, and seems like there isn't much room left before it becomes compressed load?

IIRR, 10.4 hrs is a 65 % fill... Don't think 11 is compressed

For me aol runs 1.255 for almost all heads

I use the 180XTp over 10.3gr Bluedot. I seat the bullet to 1.260

I'm running 10.0 grains of Bluedot under my 180 XTP's seated to 1.255 they do really good from my G20SF with a stock length Lone Wolf barrel and my G29SF with a stock length Storm Lake barrel.

Hmm, I am not at my loading shed right now but my standard powder for 180 grain 10mm is Blue Dot. I just can't remember how much right now.

180 xtp will make 1360+ with 11.5 gr Blue dot in a lone wolf 6.6" bbl. (1.250 Coal)

Lyman is pretty darn conservative for legal reasons. And I have no reason to doubt Alliant. I've used their max - after working up it (key!) with no issues.

That said, I may try 11.5 in the carbine! ;D :o

Did anyone else ladder test (with a chronograph) their Blue Dot loads?  Mind posting them?

I can't find the note book I used back then but I remember seeing not only higher velocities but higher ES & SD numbers as well.  (along with a reduction in accuracy)

My experience with Blue Dot in other calibers tells me it gets more consistent (for Blue Dot) and accurate near max but (especially when compressed with heavy for caliber bullets) quickly shows pressure spikes above a certain point.

IIRC, I stopped my Blue Dot ladder test 10mm 180 gr loads at 11.1 gr because I started seeing those spikes pushing my ES number over 100 f.p.s.

I don't want to sound like a chicken little but please remember, Blue Dot is a shotgun powder and not held to the same manufactures consistency standards as true pistol powder.  Their are some lot to lot variations that may warrant a new load work up just to be safe.
That said, I must confess, My 10.4 gr load has resulted in almost the exact same accuracy, and chrono numbers over three different lot numbers of Blue Dot.  (one of them over 20 years older than the other two)  However, that doesn't mean the numbers would be the same above the max load.

If IRR, the speed increase was not linear as it got close to 11grs and slightly over ( 11gr is book max ) from a stock G20
And the most accurate loads were in the 10,2 to 10,6gr range with the 180

I'm going 11.5 in the AR carbine. Will shoot tomorrow.
