Title: URGENT, Glock 40 Caliber Conversion
Post by: Bayan Dundee on April 13 2017 02:52:23 AM MDT
I am waiting for my Glock 40 to arrive, half way there, only 3 months to go, unfortunately when it arrives our laws are likely to have changed, thanks to the idiots in our Government, and I will be no longer permitted to own the pistol in its current format, If I want to keep it I will need to change its caliber when it arrives to something that is 9mm/.38 or less, have looked but  can not see a 6" Lone Wolf barrel in 357 Sig. 9x25 is not really an option here as there is no ammo, and 10 mm cases are rare, plus a  Dillon die set costs around US$ 210.

Does anyone know if LW make a 6" 357 Sig conversion barrel for the Glock 40? It is the only caliber here with available ammo,  other than 9mm, and it should function well in the standard magazines, which I will also have to  change to the 10 round model

Just as an aside, seeing as I am only allowed 1 caliber, (1 gun with 2 different caliber barrels is deemed to be 2 separate complete firearms here), can I ream the chamber out on another 357 Sig barrel  with a 357 Sig reamer to give what would be a 357 Sig magnum, a lengthened chamber with the same bottleneck dimensions, so I can resize and reload 10 mm cases using 357 dies.

The Glock was purchased to control feral hogs on the property, my 38 Super Tangfoglio was not enough gun and I think 357 Sig will not be either. Advice from anyone in the know would be appreciated to help stop a Glock 40 being melted down,  there is not much help here.

I have asked Lone Wolf for a 6" 357Sig barrel, their response was they were going to make them in the Alpha Wolf line.  However they haven't gotten to that point of producing the barrels.  Lone Wolf did have a 9mm 6" barrel that fits the G-20 and G-40 and it could be reamed out to become a 357Sig barrel if you can find the 357Sig reamer.

You would likely need some cast bullets, with as large a flat nose that you could find even if you needed to hand chamber them to be the most effective for the feral hogs.  I have used Jacketed bullets designed for 357 Magnum in my 357Sig and 9x25Dillon barrels with careful loadings.

Best of luck getting things sorted out and welcome to the forum.  :D

Thanks for your help, have previously sent LW an email, but no response, problem with reaming a 9mm barrel is that it would have to be sent to and done by an approved Gunsmith and paperwork done to verify and have it registered as 357 Sig, extra time that I may not have, only other barrel distributor here is for Bar Sto

So, where are you?  Us yanks figure everybody named Dundee carries a big knife and adorns their head cover with the teeth of things that would eat them.  Australia?

Why would you order a 10mm you can't have rather than the 357 Sig you want to build?  How many rifles can you own?  And, if you can't have a pistol that's effective against hogs, why aren't you using more barrel?

We recently had a woman propose Aussie style gun control for the US - she is presently unemployed.  I'm sorry for your dilemna - I'd move somewhere else.

Email to KKM from me; I was interested to know if KKM will produce a Glock 40 conversion 6" barrel chambered for the 357Sig cartridge?  I know several people have enquired about this conversion for the G-40 pistols on our forum.
Thank you in advance.

Their reply:
QuoteJust talked to the owner. We tried it but it didn't work well so we don't offer that anymore.

Thank you,

Reply to "Dred", yeah, live in Australia, everything was fine when the pistol was ordered and 10 mm was allowed, recent proposed changes have only just come out, been kept pretty quite and no representatives from any firearms groups were involved in the negotiation, allowed to have rifles but no semi auto rifles or pump action shotguns. Area is thick rainforest, shots are taken at around 30 feet, beyond that animals are out of site, have had problems carrying a rifle around this country, getting caught up, jungle catching firearm controls and getting mud in the barrel, fast follow shots are necessary and the handgun was the perfect option, best I can change it to is 357 Sig and will be allowed to keep it.

That sounds awful. So do they come knock on your door and take your 10mm barrel there?

every firearm is registered, with handguns they know how many magazines you have and what parts you have bought, they usually give you some time to hand in the restricted gun and parts and do give some compensation, but only for the gun and major parts, you get to keep the dies, ammo, cases etc that really are worthless to you once you have handed in the firearm, still have a shed full of ammo for mini 30, 45 ACP, 12Ga, 308, M1 Carbine and 44Mag along with powder and dies that are now 20 years old from the first round of confiscation. If you dont turn them in then they come knocking, and they also take your firearm licence as well as all your firearms for not complying. This will be the third time and I dont want to have my new gun melted down if I can save it. Might have to go to 9x25, but 10 mm brass is so difficult to find (max 200/ year I can get), import of new cases or once fired is no problem from my side, but very difficult because of your ITAR regulations in the States.

LW use to make a 6" 357SIG barrel: I have one.

Is 40S&W also banned?

You might be able to get a 6" 40S&W conversion barrel for your G40. http://10mm-firearms.com/general-discussion/40-sw-deep-throat/

I asked about using 357SIG dies as an option to reload 9x25 cartridges in this thread: http://10mm-firearms.com/reloading/reloading-9x25-dillon/msg34219/#msg34219

anything over 9mm/.38 will not be permitted, so 40 S&W is out, had intentions of shooting it along with the 10mm in the same barrel anyway, as 10 is difficult to get here. The using of 357 Sig dies to load a 9x25 would also involve reaming a chamber out on another 357 barrel with the 357 Sig reamer, have found out that a caliber does exist with 357 Sig bottleneck dimensions formed from a 10mm case, it is European and known as "9x25 Super Auto G", and is basically ballistically the same as 9x25 Dillon. the problem here is that a conversion barrel is registered and treated as a separate firearm, the advantage of the lengthened 357 Sig chambering is that I can purchase several barrels in that caliber without a problem, no one needs to know what happens to the chamber after that. Still no response from LW regarding a 6" 357 Sig barrel, they do not list one on their site so it may not exist anymore or is a special order, there are ones for the G20, but they are not long enough. Distributors here have limited stock and calibers, would need to know for sure that LW makes one so I can give them the part number and get them to specially order it.

Bryan could you get this 9mm 6.02"conversion and rechamber it to 357SIG without issues or does it become a problem?

that looks like where things are heading, due to our laws it will have to go and be done by an authorized gunsmith and have paperwork done regarding the change. That means that I have a gun registered as 357 Sig and can't just buy another 9mm barrel myself.  If I want to lengthen the chamber on one to the 9x25 variant mentioned, then I would have to have the gunsmith get the barrel, re-chamber it to 357 Sig and do the paperwork  before sending it to me, at that point then I will have to do the rest of the re-chambering, am confident at doing that, but as you can imagine things get a bit expensive, a straight up conversion barrel would be great if one exists. Unfortunately the most favored auto calibers here because they are the most powerful permitted, 357Sig and 38 Super, are probably your least used ones in the states.

Myself I'm trying to hold out to see if and when LWD will produce another 357Sig conversion for the G-20 / G-40.  Seeing how many G-40 owners could possibly want a 6" 357Sig conversion barrel in their future as well!

Lone wolf had them but the supply has dried up of the Dasan barrels.  The alphawolf line has slowly started offering more options but I dont thing the sig being in the lineup for a while still.  I see a 6" barsto in 9x25 and the 4.6" in 357 sig so they shouldn't have a problem making a 357 6".  I'd call them and see what they could do for you.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out, have spoken to a Gunsmith here in Oz who will make me a barrel for around US$360 if that is what needs to happen, just have to wait now and see if the new laws are passed, losing my Glock is only the tip of the iceberg, there are many more restrictions and attempts to curb the growth in firearms licensing and purchase that is now happening, firearm owners here need to get together and become politically motivated like in the States if we have any hope of stopping the Government taking our firearms bit by bit until one day there is nothing.
