I carry Sig 180 V-Crowns in town, they average 1178 in my 29SF and at home I carry Underwood 200 Noslers that average 1130-1140.
Why not V Crowns at home?
I put a whitetail down with the 200 Underwood Nosler, and had a nasty pass through. I don't want to take as big as of a chance at home with our son behind the bad guy.
is something backwards there ?

Yeah..I would expect the v-crowns to penetrate a bit less, given the lower SD. The extra 30 FPS isn't going to overcome the sectional density deficit.
Think about 155 grain for home maybe. They usually hit about 12.5". In gel I think.
Let me rephrase for you. If I'm outside seeing what the dogs are after, it's the 200 Noslers. I can swap mags to v crown or critical duty for the 10mm, or just grab the 9mm. I realize I explained it backwards earlier. An intruder would be between me and my son. So no matter what I use I'll rearrange my position before shooting anyway. And as suggested to me by a cop friend. Shoot from one knee at an upward angle.

Not to pick on you at all, but from my own experience as a LEO for 32 yrs ...explain a bit more on this one.
If your ever faced with a situation where you aren't 100% about your back stop, an upward angle is less likely to hit someone behind them.
I pray to God it's always hypothetical.
By the way, thank you for your service sir!
Thank you ... I never fired in 32 yrs ( God willing ) tho it came very close a couple times.....
In all honesty , don't ever remember ever thinking about backstops in those times... just if I shoot or not.
I still dream of those times now and then ... what if's
What don't you like about the V-crowns if anything? I bought some UW 165 JHP and some Doubletap 165 JHP to try in my 29 (I haven't shot it yet)
Thanks in advance for the info!
The v crowns shoot great. But chasing critters in the dark I want extra ummpphh
I would only comment on this from my LE training.
The more complicated the maneuver, the more you have to rehearse it under stress. And the more likely you won't do it right when you need to.
Yes... all comes down to 'muscle memory'
Makes perfect sense! Thanks!

Those are nightmares, thank God you never needed to.

You make a good point. I need to run some dry fire drills in the house in the dark and figure out my best options.

:o my indecisive ass just went back to Underwood. There is less chance of a pass through the faster you push a bullet.
I have boxes of Underwood as well. 155 grain is my favorite, but I have some 200 grain hard cast for when penetration matters. I never had to "shoot" when I was a cop, but did my share of 'pointing and yelling.' You know the drill. So don't hate me, but I like the PMC 170 grain HP at 1200 FPS, even for carry. It let's me practice without breaking the bank with ammo I feel would be perfectly effective in self defense situations. And it's pretty tame feeling with my plastic EAA compact.

I like Critical Duty too. $35 for 50 rounds in the LE box. They do 1080 from my Glock 29. The 4.5" barrel 40 S&W Glock 22 comes in at 980 I believe it was. Talk about some easy shooting 10mm's.
Just picked up 80 rounds of Winchester Silver Tips, Bud Gun Shop.
I recently started carrying a Glock 20SF with TruGlo TFX sights on duty. Right now I am carrying my trusted DT 165gr BJHP that I have shot for years. It works flawlessly through the 20SF. I just got in 10 boxes of Underwood 165gr BJHP and plan to test them extensively then switch to them as Underwood is cheaper plus they give me a LEO discount. I have a few more 10mm that are known performers still on hand just in case.

180 V Crowns are my 10MM carry load as well. I used one on a rattler in South Dakota that was to close for comfort while prairie dog hunting. It literally vaporized the snakes head I felt splatter from it hit me.

I stopped carrying the V Crown because I can't find a single test where the bullet opens after hitting denim.
I think Chopin Block has a video on YouTube.

Always been a good round... not to hot for a 2 or 3rd shot, good performing bullet

Where are you finding the 50 round boxes? I've only seen the 20 round boxes at much higher prices. Hornady added that round to their LE website, so I figured their might be 50 round boxes somewhere.
Dave I sent you a PM at GF
cool, thanks
Overkill do you think you would like the Underwood 180 DE load with the Nosler bullet 1240 fps. I was lucky to stock up on the Gold Dot version of that load.

Yes sir! That's a great "warm" load, suitable for most shooters. I'd carry them in an instant.
We have to see if Kevin will load those again, because 1240 is still full power but a lot more managable.
