Title: Diamond D Custom Leather out of Alaska for my RIA FS HC 10mm holster.
Post by: Kenk on September 06 2019 04:43:53 PM MDT
So I have been working with Diamond D Custom Leather out of Alaska for their  Alaskan hunter hip holster (6-8 weeks lead time : ( for my RIA Rock Ultra FS HC 10mm. Per Rock Island, they told me to have it fitted to a Springfield TRP Operator if they didn't offer my exact pistol, however Diamond D said no, the TRP is bigger and more bulky, and would not fit correctly for their holster. Soooo, my question is this; what pistol mimics the same design as the Rock Ultra, it is a 70 series 5" 1911 - A2 design ( see attached link) due to the expense of the holster, and the company's location, I would really rather not mess with a return, Thoughts....
Thanks Folks

Ken

I've been using a guy out of Laredo, Texas, for decades. If he doesn't have exactly what you want, he'll make it. He actually does the work. He doesn't send it out to be made. Rudy is a shooter so he might already have a pattern for your gun. The only way I know for you to know is to call him. He's a great guy and has never disappointed in the quality of work. Take a look at what he offers. Might have exactly what you're looking for.

Diamond d leather on my sig tax ops.

You should check out the EDC holster DD makes.  Kind of a generic belt holster but works pretty well, and only $35

Certainly didn't take Rudy long to get that holster to you. He stands behind his work like you'd expect any good leathermaker would. Looks pretty dandy too. Glad it all turned out great for you. He also does full custom work if you have an idea on a leather piece.

Thanks

Assuming you have this for a SD carry gun, the sooner you can get the finger at the trigger, the sooner you can hit the bang switch. Most often when I'm at the ranch, my pistol is not on me but on the seat next to me and it's partially out of the holster so I can get to it quicker. Might not be what you had in mind though. But even as a walk around holster, I don't see an issue with what little is exposed. Jeez, some of my old Bianchis have the complete trigger exposed and it's never been an issue.

Great thread.

I question not having a thumb break. Learn me, why not have a thumb break?

Well as you probably know terdog, a thumb break is to hold the pistol in the holster eliminating an unintended removal of the gun or allowing the gun to fall out. In Kens case, I don't see where the small part of the trigger being exposed is an issue. But it's like everything else, I drive a Ford where you might drive a GM. It's a personal preference. As I see it in Kens situation, there's not enough there to be worried about but he might find it to be an issue. My preference for a carry holster has always been to a break front shoulder holster. I keep a waist holster like Kens in the truck when I'm in the pasture while wearing a shoulder holster in case I need to leave the truck. The gun is loose in the waist holster and frankly the holster is only there to eliminate wear on the outside of gun while being bounced around on the seat as I drive thru the pastures. I got into this habit while I carried a Contender Super 14 in 30-30 years ago. Packed that gun a ton of miles. Even had a Bianchi break front shoulder holster for that hand cannon too. But it was too long in the shoulder holster to carry and drive. So it got to ride on the seat in a Contender pouch when driving. Never got out of the habit. The reason to not have a thumb break, you might need to draw and fire immediately, like in a SD scenario or even some of the shooting games where you draw and fire or don't fire after recognizing the targets. It allows for a free and open draw of the gun and no interference from a thumb break.

Seems to me that a thumb break will allow a faster draw. Having to reach for the tail and pull the snap loose is more time consuming.
