Ok, so I finally got to chronograph some of my loads.
Stock Glock 40 10mm
200gr. Acme TCFP
9.6 grs of Blue Dot
Average 1231 fps
Low of 1211 fps
High of 1243 fps
?---?-----------------------
200gr Acme TCFP
10.6 grs of Blue Dot
Average of 1314 fps
Low of 1299 fps
High of 1326
?---------------------------
200gr. Acme TCFP
10.8 grs of #9
Average of 1059 fps
Low of 998 fps
High of 1070 fps
This load shot well but, sucked as far as velocity. I know I can push the charge up but, why Blue Dot at 1.2 less grains is going on average 1231 fps! Plus showing no over pressure signs primers and brass look better as well with blue dot.
Over all I think I will test the 9.6 and 10.6 blue dot loads again this time concentrating on groups more and not shooting my chronograph lol. Both loads shot very close in size could easily cover 7 shots with the palm of my hand. Definitely hunt worthy groups.
Forgot to add I shot a few Underwood 200gr WFN Hi-Tech coated rounds.
1250 fps on the money for 3 shots. BTW any know exactly what bullet they use? Would love to pick up some.
1200 FPS with a 200 grain bullet is pretty darn good and will take even elk. I went with the 7" KKM barrel in my model 40 it upped the velocity gain with certain powders to rifle level velocities. Yes as good or within 50fps of my Contender 18" bbl. I am loading some 200 grain XTPs this morning to run through my revolver. Always playing round even two days before the season opener.... :o
Looks like some great numbers Paul! When I tested my cast RCBS 200 grain TC SWC, I found 10.0 grains of Blue Dot to be accurate from my 1006 5", G-20 & 29 with the factory barrels. I did push higher but the extra powder didn't yield any better from the shorter barrels.
Paul,
Those are nice figures for your G40, but there is still much untapped potential in your loads. Your load levels are what people are looking for in a stock length G20. One of the primary benefits of the G40 is the longer barrel and its ability to make use of powders that safely generate more velocity which equates to more energy. If you're going to use your G40 for hunting big game, energy is your best friend. My G20 with my 6" Jarvis barrel and matching G20L slide will take your 10.6 Blue Dot load well into the 1400's and still be comfortable shooting!
I don't use Blue Dot any more and haven't for years, but you're running middlin' loads here. Your load levels still have much room to grow. The bigger question I have is what you already spoke of: How is your accuracy? My absolute best accuracy with my G20 is with either Longshot or #9, best safe top-end velocity is with 800-X. 13 grains of #9 is a book load that, with a 200 grain bullet, gives me around 1235 fps in my stock barrel. I've never tested it in the 6" but I bet it would be snappy!
A I suggested in your previous thread, Accurate #9 is an excellent powder for your 10mm loads both for velocity and accuracy. It's my 2nd favorite 10mm powder! 800-x gives me top performance. Both of these, IMHO, offer the reloader in general (and the handgun hunter specifically) tremendous advantages.
As to the Underwood bullet question...
I have no idea what they use. My input, after shooting and loading the 10mm since 1984, is that I have learned what an easy cartridge it is to load for competition-grade accuracy. If you follow good reloading practices you will get good accurate ammo. Underwood doesn't have magic in their bullets- you can get the same or better accuracy and terminal performance with bullets from a ridiculous number of commercial bullet casters. I buy my Hi-Tek bullets from Montana Bullet Works now, 180 and 200 grain. I have also used Bayou Bullets with excellent accuracy.
And I'll let you in on a secret...
My best ever bullet in all of my 10mm pistols and revolvers is a .38-40 revolver bullet from 2 moulds that are both over 100 years old. 96-2-2 alloy water dropped and lubed with Lars Red gives me minute-of-deer accuracy to 100 yards. It has been successfully used for 2 Roosevelt elk in Oregon and several black bears.
So my suggestion is to get a commercially available bullet that other hunters recommend, find your best-accuracy load, and go hunting!
Shot the 9.6 and 10.6 again,10.6 was a little better than the 9.6 load. 15 shots @ 25 and I could cover the group with the palm of my hand. I know #9 can get the numbers up but, for the amount to beat Blue dot @ 9.6 and 1231fps. To me I'll stick with blue dot until I can find and test 800x. Plus I kind of like the orange and blue flames lol.
Afternoon Paul, if you have the opportunity, try a few rd's of BD after sunset, my 10.4gr / 180 XTP loads produce a really cool fireball 😄
Ken,
I have a couple of leftover boxes of .357's I loaded with BD back in the 80's. Often I will take my Security Six snubby when I go 4-wheeling or ride dirt bikes. Usually these outings involve some shooting time in an abandoned rock quarry or against a remote hillside.
If I have new friends out with me, and if we are in a shaded area, out come the old Blue Dot shells. 110 gr FMJ and a MAX load of BD in a 2.75" barrel...
OH BOY!
I think more powder burns in front of the gun than in the case and barrel. Peoples' reactions are hilarious! I wonder if Alliant considered calling it "Blue Flame" instead of Blue Dot?
For sure!
Ken
I did try 10.6grs of blue with a 180 xtp it was pretty awesome lol. It chronographed right @ 1258 fps
Nice, love the BD other than the flash
