Title: 10mm witness pro
Post by: Mandango84 on February 16 2020 06:25:26 AM MST
I bought a witness a few months back for a hunting rig. Ordered a mount and bought a used vortex venom 3moa and started trying to find a factory load. Hunting in Florida for hogs in 6 days and cant seem to find anything that is shooting well that is a decent hunting bullet.

So far I've used sig v crown, hornady XTP, HSM hard cast, federal tbbc and nothing has shot better than 4 inches. Then I found PPU defense and at 50 yards is under 5" but it's moving SLOW. Anyone have any suggestions for 150 pound porkers...?

I didn't think vortex would get my.dot back to me so i had no intention of taking it. They got it back to me super fast so I am scrambling to get a load to shoot good through it. Cant find DT or UW around here.

Are you able to mail order it in your state? That's the only way I get mine
Thanks

Yeah, we are still free in KY. But no time. Leaving on Thursday morning. I have some ppu thats shooting very well. They're just slow and the hollow point don't expand.

I will when I start to find a load for deer season. Its my fault, i drug my feet. I tore my gun apart last night and cleaned it and then put shims under the mount to tighten it up in the dovetail in case that could have been an issue.

There's a guy a few counties away who reloads ammo and sells it. Its usually under powered stuff, but he has some 180 grain flat nose hard cast bullets loaded up to 1105 put of his 5" 1911. I'll be ok with that if it shoots good.

wild hogs aren't bullet proof. but it is still all about shot placement. about anything you can shoot accurately out of your 10mm will get the job done.

Its looking like the PPU is the round I'm taking. I can keep it under 2 inches at 50 yards consistently.

Hornady XTP 180 grain works great with my Glock 40 MOS 10mm and I've killed a number of hogs with it.

You could quickly order anything you want from Midway USA and have it delivered to your destination in Florida. They have a lot of 10mm ammo to choose from.

I've tried the xtp 180s, critical defense, sig v crown, trophy bonded bear claw, some hard cast reloads and the PPU (feel like I'm forgetting one) and nothing is shooting good except the critical PPU. It shoots amazingly well, but I've heard they use old Winchester bullets that were super hard and had small cavities for the hollow point making them not open reliably.

I'm going to give them a shot and have my grendel on standby in the stand with me in case it doesn't go down immediately. I'm getting 2" groups at 50 yards easily off my tripod so I can make head shots at 25 and high shoulder spine shots at 50 and put em down quickly. When I get back I'm shipping the slide off to be milled for the RDS and start finding a load for deer season.

You could also try Winchester Silver Tips, but are seasonal in MN, October November and December for hunting. I still think you may enjoy Underwood's 180, or 200gr XTP

I went with the PPU. The round performed great, I did not. I shot a little low and took put the front legs. Luckily he didn't go far and I put a finishing round in him shortly after. I'll be finding a better load before going again, but the bullet killed the hog, I however failed a bit. The boy did get a large boar with a 300 blackout 8" pistol and killed a twofer with my 6.5 grendel 13" pistol.

It was a good day.

If I had a gun that would only shoot one bullet well, I'd be looking for a different gun.
