Mine is Sporterized but I am thinking about scoping it and doing a bent/angled bolt. The mount is key here, so anyone have experience with the offerings?
I have four mosin nagants...Well, I guess three since my oldest son turned 14, but his is still in my safe.
I don't have any scope mounts on them, but I have shopped some. I would definitely be after one of the mounts that replaces the rear sight with a 1913 style rail.
I know you can't tell, but I just re-ran my search to provide you some links, and now I own this (http://www.amazon.com/Sports-Mosin-Nagant-Scope-Mount/dp/B000R7872Y). Dang Amazon making spending money so easy.
It was $13 and change shipped. I already have a long eye relief scope doing nothing, so we will give this one a try.
I saw a video and info of one where you drill and tap for the mount. Ever see that one?
I also need to figure out who makes a good scope for the money. Don't know much about them!
There are a number of drill and tap options out there. I didn't really want to permanantly change my gun.
The short version on scopes is you can pay for glass, you can pay features, or you can really, really pay for both.
On my Remy 700 PSS I went with a Bushnell Elite 3200 in 10X fixed. These scopes run about $200. They lack any real features, no variable zoom, no parallax correction, no bullet drop reticle. But the scope has the upgraded Elite 4200 series glass. So, it is crystal clear for the money. Another scope I would look hard at if I were buying today is the SWFA SS 10X42 Tactical (http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-Riflescope-P53712.aspx). They start at $299.99 and go up as you add features.
The general advice is buy all the scope you can afford and it is good advice. What is often overlooked is advice to pay for the glass first, then add features til you hit your $ limit.
I have to check with my Bro to see what we get discounted. I think it is Redfield but can't remember.
The current crop of Redfield scopes are good, made in America scopes. They are owned by Leupold, and you are basically getting a Leupold scope at a bit of a discount cause it doesn't have the more respected brand name.
Thinking about using this guy for doing my bent/angled bolt and safety ring mod.

Scope or no scope. Scope if I don't plan on picking up another rifle.
Received my bent and angled bolt back today. He does great work and the price was right!

Put it in and may have test it tomorrow too.

Cali has a two week wait period on long guns, too? ???
Could be shipping time. Best prices are to order online for AIM or similar and have them shipped to your FFL. The four in my gun safe ran me about $86 each with shipping and ffl fees.
I received the Rock Solid mount today finally! What's an excellent power/spec scope for these?

I didn't realize I never updated this.
The Rock Solid went on via the Gunsmith and I purchased the suggested Warne rings.

My bent bolt didn't work with the mount though :(

New bolt and all together except... no scope! It's been like that for two ordering periods trying to get a scope through my Brother.

I really want to shoot it this year, so today I sent for a scope to use on it.

With any luck, I might finally be shooting it scoped next weekend!
The scope is here already ;)

I'm liking it so far. Now to get it mounted!
Fits really good and can't wait to try it!

It looks like I have enough room to possibly squeeze a 50 on there.

I was just informed, I can buy some Mosin Nagants, new with bayonet for $150...is that a good price?
I don't know where they are on pricing currently. When I purchased this one it was $169 with the Monte Carlo stock conversion new. They did all the work of fitting, plus shipped the stock wood setup, bayonet and cleaning kit.
I remember them as $99 rifles and it looks like that might still be the case:
http://www.classicfirearms.com/originalmolotm9130wbayob?utm_source=EmailzDirect&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=Subscriber%233963&utm_campaign=%2499%20Mosin
These may be a local FTF sale and thus no transfer fees or shipping charges being tacked on. I'm going to investigate them further.
I thought you have a Mosin or are you looking to Sporterize?
No I don't have one, someone I know has offered to sell some of his. I am waiting to see what he has to offer. I know that they can be some good shooting rifles and the ammo used to be fairly cheap....However you know me I'm a handloader and would want to roll my own stuff and that may cost more, as I would need dies and some other things to provide that option.
:-\
They are a must own! I shoot the spam can stuff .18-.20/round and love it! For heavy duty shooting at a cheap cost they can't be beat. Including the purchase with everything here I have about $700 in it. The ammo savings though makes that look nice 8)
I went this way with the stock, I got mine for about $149. http://www.archangelmanufacturing.com/new-products-2013/
I also got the set trigger. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/559350/timney-trigger-mosin-nagant-1-1-2-to-4-lb-steel-matte?cm_vc=ProductFinding
I have yet to bend the bolt or add a scope mount, but was leaning toward Rock solid.
Yea. That stock wasn't out when I started mine or I probably would have gone that route, although it is kind of funky looking! :o The trigger is awesome from what I hear but expensive. On YouTube you can find videos of working the stock piece into something better for basically nothing invested. It's never really bothered me in shooting though.
The RS mount is the only way to go! Like I learned here if you look back at my progression the bent bolt won't work with it. You have to run their cut and welded piece to clear the slot for bolt retraction. That was $80 wasted! ???
I was planning on getting the RS set, Mount and Bolt at the same time. Just to many other guns and projects have kept me from doing it.
I guess I was going to see what it would do, with the regular sights first. If it would ever warm up again, I will have to take it out.
The regular sights worked good for me. I can't really buy much as far as firearms now, so I figured it was time to wrap this project up.
I use it in the woods. Prvi brass soft tips and priced nice. Spam for target. Id like to get one with orig scope someday. They are hard to come by now.
I picked up mine a couple of years back in a group buy. I think in the group we ended up with a little over four 20-gun crates.
We bought through AIM surplus. At that time with a group discount we ended up around $70 a rifle + ffl fees. The FFL we used cut us a deal of $15 flat fee up to five rifles, $10 a rifle for each one past the first 5. I bought four, and have wished ever since I had bought 8.
It looks like they are now up around $130. No reason not to grab the ones from classic firearms for $99. All mine have character.

You ought to get one Shadow, they're loads of fun and fairly cheap as mentioned! pacapcop is right, the PPU boxer primed brass stuff is pretty reasonable and shoots well, 150g softpoints can be had for <15$ per 20 and I believe they sell a 180g load too. The spam can stuff is fun to shoot also, just a PITA to clean! I've attached a pic, 2 Chinese Type 53 (m44 copy) and the upper one is a 91/30 that I cut a couple inches off of, debating chopping another 5 or 6inches. 91/30 was $130 and the 53's were $99 a piece when jgsales had them on sale. The one type 53 thats missing the bolt belongs to a family member but had to include it! (the bolt thats in the 91/30 belongs in his gun but shhh, just swapped for the pic, haven't made a bent bolt for mine yet)

Intercooler, you're rifle looks pretty nice. I bought the same rock solid mount for mine but decided to go the "scout" route. How to you like the Bushnell Banner? They've got great reviews and I've often thought about one.
The scope seems like great quality and function. The weather hasn't allowed me to shoot it yet but things are changing.
We have 60 degree weather forecasted tomorrow. I'm getting the ammo together tonight to sight it tomorrow and bruise my shoulder up ;D
Good luck enjoy the outing. We had a great day of weather here today but scheduled for rain in the morning!

Ah yes the Northeast is finally giving us a break! Let us know how it your set up works out, should be a good day for you, I'm sincerely jealous being stuck at work :P
It was a great day with 64 on arrival and 63 on departure. I started at 30 yards and the first shot hit on an 8" paper plate. In the next 4-6 shots it printed within an inch of the bullseye (a dot sticky). I love this setup and the scope is just awesome! I don't have the best rest to shoot 100 yards, but it still kept a good circle of hits.
That's my target way down there (100 yards)

I love the adjustment on the scope and it's crystal clear. After I felt good about my 100 yard settings I screwed the position screws back in. My other scope on the .22 doesn't have that.

All 88 rounds of ammo I took with me are gone :o I do have a slight bolt issue I am hoping to find the answer on it. This isn't the original bolt and for some reason I have to hit up on it hard to get the extraction process started.
It seems my problem is a common one. I found this video and plan to do some polishing on my bolt this weekend. This so looked like me today :D
