Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Black Talon 10mm rounds

Not doubting you in the slightest Aegis.
Forgot to mention; couple of wackjobs used them in high profile shootings in the early 90's.  MSM did the rest.

Here is a little more on the general topic.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Black Talon 10mm rounds

I remember the controversy surrounding Winchester Balck Talon different.
The big deal was the media's false narrative (propaganda) that the black lubalox coated projectiles were actually designed and manufactured of materials to make them police Kevlar piercing "cop killer bullets."  Fake news isn't anything new in this country.
Obviously, as everyone around here knows; nothing was further from the truth regarding the actual properties of a lubricated JHP Black Talons penetrating Kevlar vests (of appropriate rating).

Enough bad PR was brought to bear on Winchester, they discontinued the Black Talons....  Only to remove the lubalox and reintroduce and rebrand as the SXT.....  Which later evolved into the Ranger T.  Similar technology later evolved into the PDX1 & Ranger Bonded lines.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: New Dan Wesson Razorback
September 28 2022 05:51:35 AM MDT
Congratulations on your new Razorback!

They are fantastic!  Wouldn't part with mine for anything.

Haven't seen anything on the Razorback being discontinued again.  They had previously been discontinued at some point, then reintroduced about 10 years ago.  Did hear something about the DW Valor being discontinued couple years ago but not even confident that turned out to be accurate.

Best of luck with your new Razorback, shoot the heck out of it and enjoy your fine firearm.  I've always used FP-10 to lube and protect & lubricate mine and it's worked very well.

The contemporary Anaconda is simply an almost exact scaled up duplicate of the Python (in the more powerful magnum caliber obviously)

Top is the 2020 Python (Deer Hollow late Gen 3, walnut target grips. Personal preference but prefer the classic target grips over the new grips-which are designed with speed loaders in mind I suspect)
Bottom is vintage (1978 DOM) Python in original royal blue finish.

One guys opinion but I think Colt knocked it out of the park.  Clearly the same styling lineage, beefed up frame in couple of critical areas & vastly superior modern metallurgy and manufacturing process; legitimately land the new Pythons & Anacondas up in the Korth revolver areas of strength.

I love the vintage Python and it's a masterpiece of handmade art to me and it gets fired occasionally (mostly with 38 specials) but it's treated with kid gloves & babied (perhaps overly so but so be it).  The new Python & Anaconda are heavy-duty, hard-core shooters that happen to look classy & beautiful IMHO.

2021 Anaconda (Altamont Grips that came on the 2020 Python, later changed to different pair of Altamont with Colt medallions inlaid and finger groves).

The new Pythons and Anacondas are really very nice revolvers.

Colt it finally doing thing right and I hope it continues.
Have you compared them to the Ruger revolvers?

Congrats on the new Anaconda Intercool!  My 6" Anaconda came with a SA trigger at 5.2lbs (but felt much lighter because of the trigger geometry) and DA at 10.2lbs (leaf string makes it amazingly smooth).  Had mine about 6 months now and love it.  Was so happy about the work Heffron Precision did on new Python last year and a S&W 686 a couple years ago; went ahead and sent them the Anaconda too.  After the trigger job, SA 3lbs & DA is 8lbs.  Really like the work but I wouldn't say working over the trigger on the new Anaconda is a must.

I've also own a Ruger Super Redhawk w/ 6.5" barrel in 44 mag which I'm super fond of (got an RMR mounted on it and often use it for deer hunting) but a side by side comparison to it and the Big Snake isn't particularly favorable to the Ruger SRH.  Don't get me wrong the SRH it's a fine tool, I dig the style, it's never had single issue and it's been very effective (it isn't going anywhere).  However, the Anaconda way outshines it in refinement, finish, attention to detail, incredibly smooth action.  Out of the box, both revolvers had similar SA triggers but the DA trigger on the Colt was much, much smoother, non stacking, and lighter even at a hair over 10lbs vs the SRH stacking a bit and breaking at 12lbs....  The leaf springs technology Colt uses are awesome in my opinion.  Again, I use the SRH for target shooting & hunting and it works great so I left the Houge rubber grips on it.

My one and only (thus far) knock on the Anaconda is the Houge rubber grips.  Don't get me wrong they work exactly as designed and intended and cushion the recoil a bit and I'm sure are great for modern shooters who are often a little recoil sensitive (no I'm no Jerry Miculek in fact far, far, far from him).  Such a beautiful, powerful revolver with rubber grips just don't suit me in this case.  This classy revolver calls out for well-made, top-quality wood grips.  Altamont Grips make a very beautiful set of walnut grips with the Colt medallion & finger groves and is what I replaced the Houge rubber grips with on mine.  Perhaps its the heft of the Anaconda but I don't find the recoil unpleasant shooting even hot loads of 44 mag in the big snake with the walnut grips by Altamont.

Best of luck with your new Anaconda!  Caution, Colt's new snake guns are addictive (and the vintage snake guns may require a second mortgage) but so far, so good for me.

It's a shame they didn't make this something that converts to .22 Magnum. That's the one feature I love about my 992!

Right, that would be off the chart cool!

I do like the Taurus Tracker M992 as well but haven't one in the wild for a while.

Handguns / Re: Return of Colt Python .357 Magnum

Well, even though I initially decided not to, I ended up sending mine to Heffron Precision in Iowa for action and trigger job.  They did an incredible job and new Python came back with 2.75lb SA and even more smooth and slick (which I didn't think would be possible) 8lb DA trigger.  I've sent other revolvers to Heffron over the years and he's amazing with Colt, S&W & DW revolvers.  Very reasonable prices too.

The new Python and the infatuation with it that quickly followed lead me down the rabbit hole with Colt revolvers and I went off the edge.  Picked up a couple more contemporary Colt revolvers and vintage one to round out the collection.  Course, had to sell off several safe queens to fund the new infatuation but in the end, they became expendable.

I've been super pleased with these new & vintage Colts and at this point have about 1,200 rounds though them.  I'd give them a strong buy recommendation for anyone who may even have been remotely interested in the Python, Anaconda, King Cobra.  I don't think you'll regret it, I certainly don't.

Gear/Equipment / Re: Sig Romeo 5

Highly recommend them.  Got 3 of them on rifle & PCCs.

If part of a late-night chopper insertion into the Hindu Kush, there are far better options.  But for plinking, home defense or a little tactical shooting class or play at the range; the Romeo 5 is as good a bang for the buck red dot as you'll find IMO.

Handguns / Re: New Colt Cobra .22LR

Colt is on a heck of win streak since they got back into the revolver game....
The Cobra 2017, King Cobra 2019 have been huge successes and very popular.
Then they rolled the updated Python out in 2020 - It was in the top 10 most purchased handguns in 2020 & 2021; a monumental success.
In 2021 Colt brought the updated Anaconda back (bigger version of the Python) and it's also received monster acclaim and crazy sales in the year that it's been out.
Now Colt introduces the King Cobra 22lr....  It's really an updated Diamondback but they won't call it that because Diamondback Firearms sorta snagged the name in the interim.  So the King Cobra 22lr it is.....

I was definitely among those that initially dismissed the Python when it was reintroduced in early 2020 as ridiculously overpriced.  That was until I actually laid eyes and hands on one...  I was incredibly impressed.   I already wrote a mea culpa here and gave my honest impressions on the Python when I acquired it and took it out and fired it; so I won't bore with another run through.
What has changed since then however; a new Anaconda 44 mag & King Cobra 357 mag are resting beside the Python in the safe as I write this.  Yea, things got a little wild there for awhile.  I got the colt bug bad.  Like any good collector who doesn't want to go bankrupt....  Gone a Sig Sauer 40S&W; gone was a Ruger SP101 in 357 mag, gone was a Taurus Raging Bull 44 mag to help fund this new infatuation with updated Colt Revolvers....

So yea Glen, at some point after the craze dies down a lot.....  I'll probably end up with a new Colt 22 revolver too. 8)

Far as I'm concerned right now, these new Colts are by wide measure significantly better than any other revolvers  currently being manufactured domestically.  They are not cheap by any means but check them out; you might be surprised and impressed too.  YMMV

Don't misunderstand, I still love my 10mm pistols!!  They won't be going anywhere exempt down to my children when my run here is over.  However, these new Colts have keenly peaked my interest in fine revolvers.

Handguns / Re: Turkish Sarsilmaz SAR 9
May 24 2022 06:53:21 PM MDT
The Sarsilmaz SAR 9 shares a lot of functional features with VP9 because HK licensed them design manufacturing rights.

I've had the HK VP9 for about 7 years and it's still my favorite 9mm.  Couldn't even begin to guess how many rounds through it in that time and never had a single malfunction.  Seen good things about the SAR9 but never moved to add one to the collection HOWEVER, if opportunity came up to snag one for $200 bucks I wouldn't hesitate for a second.

10mm Hunting / Re: 10mm Ammo For Deer Hunting

Welcome to the forum.  In addition to the fine options listed above, encourage you to search and sniff around the forum.  You'll find an amazing amount of information about 10mm deer and medium game hunting ammunition options and knowledge.  You won't find a better resource repository of 10mm hunting ammo information anywhere on the internet.

Good luck!

Glock 20 is what I carry when I'm out in sticks in your neck of the woods.  With the KKM barrel (I have one as well) or with factory OEM barrel.

In NW Montana:
Strong endorsement +1 on the hardcast wfn projectile loaded on the warm side by Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Grizzly and even Double Tap. (I personally favor gas checked to reduce leading potential).  Lots of guys here load their own.

As others have sad, very wise to test function in your firearm.  I've had no issues with KKM barrel or OEM barrel and stick with the 200gr WFN hardcast in OEM barrel.  If I stayed with 200gr;  not seen stabilization or feeding issues in with OEM.  Watch for leading if you shoot much hardcast in Glock OEM barrel (again gas check bullet helps a lot) but I've not had any issues although not recommended to feed steady diet of hardcast in Glock OEM barrel.

Considering the dangerous animals in your area, hardcast way to go; one other option might be Buffalo Bore "Dangerous Game" in 10mm.  It's monolithic copper bullet built like a punch round.  It penetrates even deeper than hardcast but comes a pretty decent cost premium.  What's a couple bucks when your talking about your life? However, either will do nicely!

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Federal punch
April 26 2022 05:41:00 AM MDT

No personal experience with Federal, ammo in 10mm or anything else.  There are a good number of tests with the Federal Punch ammo starting to show up on Youtube, which you can catch.  Haven't seen anything in 10mm yet.

The Federal Punch is supposed to be a HST offshoot. Very similar but less expensive to make and not built to quite same standards as HST with respect to all of LE testing protocols (windshield, steal, wood or drywall, ballistic gel, etc).  Again, only conveying what I've read with no endorsement or detraction.  Supposed to be a simpler, cheaper alternative to LE ammo good for most personal self-defense applications.  In my case, haven't seen any real price difference vs the HST when I've come across it so thus far, just stuck with HST...

Let us know what you think.
