10mm semi-auto handguns / Barrel Swap?
November 13 2022 11:19:49 PM MST
Is it safe to swap a G40 barrel into a GEN4 G20?

I had the XDm with the longer barrel for a while. Then sold it because I didn't like it better than my Glocks. Main reason was the trigger reset wasn't as pronounced as my Glocks. A nice thing about the XDm pistols is very good chamber support that handle my nuclear loads (200gr XTP at 1250fps from a 4" barrel). But I use aftermarket barrels in my Glocks to compensate, and then still like the Glocks better overall.

Hope you enjoy your XDm, as it is a very good 10mm platform, and may have just jumped in value being that they have recently been discontinued.  ;)

Looking for anyone to share pics of SIG P320 and S&W M&P, chambered in 10mm Auto.

Left to Right - Colt Delta Elite, Glock 20 Gen3, EAA Witness, Springfield Armory XDm, Aftermarket Lone Wolf for Glock 20, and Aftermarket Storm Lake for Glock 20.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: 10mm Factory Ammo Master Sheet

One easy way to weed out some is that nobody is using 800X powder anymore so any of those can be moved to the discontinued section.

I know it would take a lot of work to research what's what, but it would be nice if the loads that don't exist anymore were either highlighted or whatever to differentiate between loads that currently exist.

Not a big fan. Like my Glock 20 much better.

If it wasn't for the grip safety I would like the XDm much better overall but still not better than my Glocks.  When shooting my nuclear handloads (180gr bullets at 1425fps/811ft-lbs as measured from my 5.25" XDm barrel) it likes to pinch the web of my hand between my thumb and first finger. That's annoying! But it's not so bad with mild to medium loads (180gr bullets under 1200fps) because of not needing as tight a grip on the gun. On a positive note the XDm barrel chamber support handles all my different nuclear handloads, which my Glock 20 barrel does not (I have a handful of blown out cases to prove that  ;D ).

Otherwise the XDm 5.25" seems nicely built overall with a better fit and finish than my Glocks. The XDm also operates more smoothly than my Glocks. I hate fiber optic sights but that's just me and obviously they can be swapped out. But because of the nuclear loads I like to shoot, the Glock is far more comfortable to shoot with it's wider grip and no grip safety to pinch my hand. Of course with the Glock I'm forced to buy an aftermarket barrel with better chamber support than the stock barrel to handle my nuclear loads.

If you never shoot any 10mm ammo hotter than the Winchester Silvertip 175gr load (1250fps from my XDm 5.25") then you might do okay with the Springfield.

In the following link you can see the velocities I've posted from my XDm 5.25" from numerous factory loads.

Accuracy between my XDm and Glock is basically equal in my experience.

Range reports / Re: First time with Underwood Ammo

Quote from: Kenk on December 06 2019 05:35:51 PM MSTAnother UW product you may want to test for carry is their bonded 165gr Gold Dot. These are moving at aprx 1400 fps / 718 ft lbs, and have proven themselves to be very accurate from my RIA Ultra FS HC.

Ken
I've recently chronographed the UW 165 Gold Dot load.
Glock 20 (4.6" barrel) = 1320 fps
Springfield XDm (5.25" barrel) = 1370 fps
Based on 10 shot averages.

UW does claim them to be at 1400 fps but doesn't specify from what barrel length. Seems about 6" of barrel should do it easily.

Quote from: Jason B. on September 04 2017 07:38:47 PM MDTThanks,

One thing that I was a bit concerned about was the case bulge I was seeing with all the loadings. Is it normal to have a little case bulge running the looser chamber of the Glock?
If you still have any of the spent brass, any chance you could post a picture of the worst case bulges you discovered?  I've experienced plenty of them and a few case blowouts in my own 10mm Glocks but would like to see the bulge level yours were at if possible.

I keep the lids on my tumblers while they are in use. I take each tumbler outside to my patio to dump it into the rotary separator. After I've separated brass from media, I dump the media back into the tumbler before I take it inside.

Any dust is minor this way- no dust in my workshop!
Good idea.  From now on I think I'll follow your lead!

I sure hope SOMEBODY saw my attempt at humor! I mean, I wasn't trying to be some radical trailblazer or anything! :o
Ha Ha, while obvious there is some encouragement to hearing someone directly pointing it out.  I was looking for an easy way out without any real extra steps to the process.  Doesn't seem there really is one though that solves the issue 100% in a work area you're still trying to keep immaculately clean.  There's always give and take one way or another is seems.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Nice Chrono testing
October 14 2019 04:29:47 AM MDT
If you look at Buffalo Bore's claim of 1350fps from a 5" barrel, it basically came out dead on through the SIG P220.  Since the Glock G20 has a shorter 4.6" barrel it wouldn't be expected to match the P220.  I find in my own testing by swapping in a tight chambered barrel in my Glock 20 adds about 25fps give or take 5fps.  All in all though the stock Glock barrel in this test did okay, only 20fps less on average over what Buffalo Bore claims their own G20 managed.  And about the looser chamber of the Glock G20, if enough dirt/grime were to enter the picture in possible life and death scenario it would probably be the last gun still shooting rounds of ammo after all others failed.  So there is give and take.

On a side note I was happy to see Buffalo Bore ammo performing up to their claims.  That's becoming more and more rare these days in the world of 10mm!  So thumbs up to Buffalo Bore!  And even though they weren't a part of this test, Hornady's new and improved velocity 10mm loads are actually doing what they claim too.

Looking forward to it! I'ld be most curious to see what PSI it shows for various UW factory loads.
