Gunsmithing / Experienced Gunsmith to Cut Slide?
June 03 2022 08:35:09 AM MDT
I have a Witness Hunter that I put a Leupold Deltapoint Pro red dot optic.  The gunsmith i used did not want to cut into the slide so he made a base that fits the rear sight dovetail.  The DP if fitted on that plate.  Because of this, the optic feels like it is too high.  So I'm wondering if there are any accomplished gunsmiths that are able to cut out a recess in the slide so I can remove the plate and lower the optic some more.  The DP has a rear target site that I would like to co-witness with the red dot.
Any suggestions?  I know the Tanfoglio slide may not have a lot of metal to work with, but I wonder...

Here are BEFORE and AFTER pics of my Rock 10 (TAC).  At first it was a little finicky, but with help from this forum and YouTube, I added a few upgraded parts... polished some parts, smoothed some edges and went with a custom Ceracoat.  Now it's purring like a kitten, and will gobble anything I feed her.

Anyone know the differences between the Witness Hunter and the Witness Match Extreme, except for the $1100 mark up on the ME?

Haha.  I do like it!

I'm looking for an OWB leather (index is too loud) holster that will accommodate my Hunter with an attached optic.  It'll be used to control the piggy population...

I like RIA guns.  They're a great option for the money, but you have to be prepared to experience failures early on, and understand that you will be sending it back to them for service.  If you can buy it knowing this, then you'll be rewarded with a very nice piece, as they usually return from the factory functioning perfectly...

Here is my rendition.  RIA TAC with complete makeover.  It was problematic at first.  But after sticking with it and sending it in to RIA, it is now running perfectly.  I use it as my sidearm when bowhunting.

I was very concerned about the grip on the Witness and vacillated back and forth for quite some time.  I have 2 1911's (10mm & 45), and a CZ SP01, all with thin custom grips.  These grips feel perfect for me, so I was afraid the double stack Witness Hunter would be a bit much.  I handled the Glock and Rock Island double stacks and found them to be too bulky for my taste, but kept hearing that the Tanfos are much thinner.  Finally after hearing so many other reports on how much better the Witness grip is, I caved in and bought it sight unseen.  Man I was pleasantly surprised.  The grip is indeed great.  The pistol in the pic has the thin Henny(?) aluminum grips, which are just a smidgen thinner than the stock wood grips.  Both grips are excellent, and while I'd give an ever slight edge to the custom grips on my CZ, these grips are outstanding.  Plus the fact that it holds 14 rounds makes me like it even more.  I'm glad you guys talked me into it.

VERY nice. Does that optic cowitness with the front sight?

Unfortunately it does not co-witness.  The only way to do that would be to put an exaggeratedly tall front blade, or machine the slide to lower the optic...

Hey Rev,

Gotta say, I dig what you've done here. Sweet piece!

Curious if that custom mount to slide is friction fit only?

The mount is semi-friction fit but also secured with 2 set screws...

Resurrecting this old thread with an update. Finally got to put the gun through its paces.  Optic performed perfectly with a variety of factory ammo as did the gun itself.  After several hundred rounds, not a single failure.  100% reliable.

Very nice indeed.  Congrats on a fine piece.  I'm sure it'll shoot as good as it looks.

Love the Sig FMJ ammo...
Bud's Gun Shop and Ammunition Depot have them for just under $24 a box/50 ...
That's hard to beat... or pass up.
