Rifles / Re: Howa 6.5 Grendel
February 07 2017 07:12:03 PM MST
I got my Howa mini grendel back before Christmas and have enjoyed it very much . My 14yo daughter took over it so I gave it to her. At first I put my Vortex 1-6 strike eagle on it and she wanted something with more power so I gave her my Nikon monarch 5  4-20x50 with 20moa warne picatinny base. She is getting close to 1moa . I'm getting about .75 moa . Its one heck of a shooter . She also shot her first deer (doe) with it on Christmas morning. First shot kill 150 yds away with the swift scirocco 130gr , ran about 15 yds then flopped.  Since my last post grendel ammo prices have dropped .  Federal just released 3 more loadings fusion 120 , gold medal match 130 with berger bullet and 90gr tnt speer . Hornady dropped the Amax for the eld match 123gr and dropped the price about  $5. Wolf makes a cheap bimetal load for $5 a box . CZ announced that they will make the 527 bolt action in the 6.5 grendel , Vepr AK offers a 6.5 Grendel . A couple more manufacturers are dabbling with the idea too , so it's looking like the 6.5 grendel is here to stay for a while .

Intercooler is a legend.  Before I ever came to this site I was reading his reviews on ammo .

Good reason to stock up . Looks like a way to ban Internet Sales by blocking shipping .

I'm just happy that the 10mm is gaining main stream attention. More 10mm guns = more ammo demand, more demand = more ammo producer's,  more ammo producers = lower price ammo due to competition and more ammo options.  I hope this gun feeds better than other para 1911's .

I still have some of the 1350fps 180gr. Also shoot them out of my delta with zero bulge .

I may be mistaken, but I thought the underwood 180gr's used to be 1350fps . Now they are 1300fps . I also remember the underwood  155gr used to say they were  802ftlbs energy.  Now it's 774ftlbs .  Does anyone else remember?  If I'm wrong please let me know . I've read many 10mm numbers so I may have things mixed up.

I've shot most of underwood 10mm loads. The 155gr are the hottest in my opinion of their loads . I've never had a bulge in the brass . If I'm in question,  I load one round and remove the clip then shoot  . That way if a case ruptures all the gas goes down and out the bottom instead of blowing the clip up and breaking the gun. After I shoot the new round I'll find the brass and inspect for bulges.

I had the same issue with mine were the case edge meets the bullet hanging on the feed ramp.  After 500 rds it fixed itself.  These 1911's need a break in period. I still have a hanger from time to time though. I never thought of using polishing compound.  I may polish it next cleaning . I have a tube of knife blade polishing compound that is good stuff .

We love our rural king .  They have their own gun  sales website . They are starting to carry some upper end pistols like Sig sauer . What's funny is High point is their biggest seller at our local store.

Factory Ammo / Federal 223 100rd value pack
May 20 2016 03:31:38 PM MDT
Bought 3 boxes of Federal 223 55gr fmj 100rd value pack ( burgundy red ).  I've only seen them at Walmart.  Well , anyways,  they are NOT accurate.  They go bang every time and cycle in my AR and bolt Howa and thats were it ends. Before I got them I read the reviews and everyone bragged about how accurate they were , some even calling them  " the poor man's gold match ". Well these ain't no Federal Gold Match .As a matter of fact I would bet money that Tula 223's have better accuracy.  I have many different brands of 223/5.56 ammo that I compared yesterday.  Usually our Rural King carries Geco, Aquila,  winchester nato, federal American eagle,  remington umc and the hunting 223 which is expensive.  I switched back and forth between the Geco 55 grain , American eagle 55 grain, Federal 55 grain fmj " value pack" . My test rifle was my Howa 223 1/9" twist with nikon 4x16 monarch  . At 100yds the Geco was about 1.5" ,  the black american Eagles were about 2" and the " federal value pack " was about 5"+. These were all 10 shot groups . I really like the Geco 223 and their 5.56 . Wish they made a 10mm round . Their stuff is always hot.

Shot a box today and was surprised at the accuracy.  At 25 yds most hit inside 3" group.  Did notice a bit more smoke , but no biggie. I thought they were very good for the money .
