Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Favorite powder for 135 Nosler?
September 24 2021 01:41:53 PM MDT
My notes say
Quotebrutal & hard hitting round

12 grains of Longshot and 1540 FPS from my stock bbl Kimber

I have since changed to 180 & 200s with faster powder. BE83 & such.

A 135 grain Nosler and a bunch of Longshot hit 1540 using my Kimber 10mm. I only shot it a couple of times before going back to more "traditional" 10mm projectiles

FWIW I have used Longshot with a 180 grain JHP, but not (yet) a coated lead. 9 grains of Longshot with a Montana Gold 180 JHP was good for about 1275 out of my Kimber. It's my "STD" 10mm load.

Range day on Saturday, because I needed to "empty" some 45 ACP brass. I had none left at home to load!  :D

Saturday morning I made up a batch of 9mm for my Mrs. with her favorite Unique & 147 grain Blue Bullets. Sunday afternoon was spent cleaning guns from the range trip on Saturday. A good weekend all-in-all.

When starting out with 200 grain bullets I also started out with brand new Starline brass. I found that the "sweet spot" for my Kimber was 7.8 of Power Pistol. It got to 1160 FPS average over 8 shots but the extreme spread was only 8 FPS. That's my keeper for 10mm & 200 grains.

Be safe.

So, it's official. There is an ammo shortage going on. Have you heard about it??

I have no more 45ACP brass to load... well except the big jar of small primer!

I did manage to trade some SPPs for some SRPs last week, so I'm feeling better about keeping my wife's AR fed.

So am I the only one who primes on the press?

Originally, I was a fan of mid range book value for Longshot under a 180 grain JHP. It's good for about 1250-1275 out of my Kimber. Lately I've gone to 200 grain FMJ and BE-86

Yesterday I put up the last of my (+/- 250?) Montana Gold 45/230 with WST for my wife, and afterwards another batch of 45/200 LSWC with Red Dot for testing on next range trip.

Bulged is usually not a problem, even if the bulge is large.  Cold working the brass makes it stronger.

Smiled is usually a problem.  The smile line is where the brass started to separate, tear or crack. Even if you mechanically move the brass back, it will not become one uniform piece again.

Good and pertinent discussion here. I just worked up some 200 grain Gold Dot loads with BE86.

Glock 20 long slide, 6.5" Lone Wolf barrel
24# recoil spring
Average case length - .977
COAL - 1.250
Once fired Sig brass
Load steps
8.0 - Avg 5 shot velocity 1278.87
8.2 - Avg 5 shot velocity 1308.71
8.4 - Did not shoot
8.6 - Did not shoot

I've shot thousands and thousands of 10mm with factory, LW and KKM barrels and I have never seen a smile on a case until now.

pics removed...

I'm assuming these are a weeee bit hot. I think I'll back down to around 7.4 grains and try again.

I sure wish Quickload had BE86 powder in its database. [emoji853]

Where did you get the idea that 8.0 of BE-86 was a good start point for 200 grain projectiles? Alliant doesn't list a 200 grain bullet, only a 190 and and the max with a 190 is only 7.6?

I received 3000 147 grain 9mm bullets from The Blue Bullet company all in 1 box. Man, it was heavy!

FWIW, I just bought 3000 9mm for my Mrs. from the Blue Bullets. The invoice said "weight based shipping" & as of now, it's free. They are to be delivered tomorrow.

Thanks for the update Alabusa.
What made you decide on 11.9 grains? Accuracy? Just a "feeling"?

Jdub,
my pet load in my Kimber is 9 grains of Longshot. It's good for about 1275 FPS and right in the middle of the Hodgdon window. Be safe.
