Handguns / Re: Recoil Springs for LAR Grizzlies

Thanks for the response.  I am assuming that you would not shoot any amount of Underwood in the Grizzly?

I have never handled the 50AE MKV version but I'm assuming LAR must have beefed that one up even more, and not just added a heavier recoil spring.

There already is a 41 Auto Mag Pistol caliber which tops the 10mm Mag.

I doubt that the any Auto Mags will ever be built with a different sized case head than the 45 ACP/308/30.06 that is used now.

That is an exceptionally nice variant with the 8" bull and vented rib.  I'm always amazed at the different versions of Automags made.  I remember the Gun Digest articles from the 70s which showed a number of the unique configurations.  I didn't realize there were so many more until seeing the ones you and Tony are highlighting here.

Got the email from Patrick that my new one is now on its way.  Can't wait.

Another quick question, Tony (or others).  I notice the Underwood 45 Win. Mag. ammo is considerably more potent than the Winchester loadings i.e. - 1300 ft. lbs v 1000 ft. lbs.
Is anyone aware of any issues running stronger loadings in the Grizzly?

Thanks.  For 357RemMag, maybe I'll try a 22lb like the Coonan or 20lb to account for the heavier slide.

The spring for the 45WinMag I just got didn't seem as stout as I was expecting so thinking I might replace before shooting.

Handguns / Recoil Springs for LAR Grizzlies

I understand the spring weight for the 45 Win Mag is 27 lb?  Anyone experimented with other options?  Does anyone know what is typically used for the 357 mag conversion (not the 357 Grizzly Mag)?  Thanks

So I just picked up a lightly used one.  It is my 3rd P220 10mm (I previously had a full stainless and a hunter).

I prefer adjustable sights, but was never wow'ed by the SAO triggers or slick wood grips.  To be fair, I probably didn't give the others enough of a chance and probably could have improved the triggers with more use or a good polish.  Anyway I jumped on this one when it came up and glad I did.  The SA trigger is really nice - better than the dedicated SAOs I've used.

The other thing I've struggled with previously was the rounded and smooth slide serrations which made racking the slides a challenge with those strong recoil springs.  To my surprise, the Emperor has very sharp slide serrations making racking a simple task.

Only thing I didn't like on the Emperor (other than the fixed sights) was the stock short reach trigger (not to be confused with the SRT kit) so I replaced it with a Grayguns curved which is much better for my hand size.

Anyway all the P220 10mms are nice, but I'm surprise by some of the difference.  Not sure if it is batch related or model related - I don't think the Emperor got any special treatment.  Curious if anyone else noticed differences.  Haven't tried a Legion version but i understand it did get some special treatment.

I had a Hunter 10mm and it was sufficiently accurate.  Can't go wrong for the price but it is certainly not the last word in refinement.  If you like stainless, take a look at the Kimber.  It should be around the same price.  It won't be more accurate but slightly better finished imo.

Hi there - Tracking some of these down from EGW and have a question.  I get that there are different variants for series 70 and 80, and for different rear sights, but some variants are also specific to 45 and 9/38/40.  What is the difference?  Are the dimensions not the same?  Could I use one for 45 in a 10mm or can I only use the versions for 9/38/40?

Great write up and pics.  Too bad they are so rare these days as I would love to add one.  Wonder if the remake will ever materialize.

With any luck this one is going to be the one. I hope to have a CSP in my hands sometime early spring. If not I am going to give up on ever kicking that football... Lucy will have won..

Wow.  That sounds way closer to completion than I realized.  Automag - check, Wildey - check, and now the Bren?  Sweet.  Love seeing these awesomely engineered marvels from the 70s and 80s resurrected.  All we need now is the P7 and P9.

Thanks for the kind comments! I would likely get one of the remakes, too, if they're halfway affordable. It'd be nice to be able to get more magazines, plus not having to worry about causing irreparable damage to my original every time I take it out. It is one of my favourite pistols to shoot so having one I could shoot a ton worry-free would be nice.

Good on you for shooting it.  Too often these gems sit unused.  Not that someone can't appreciate a dedicated collector that they only fondle while sitting on the couch, but it is not quite the same as getting them out.

Very nice.  I picked one up too and love it.  A 6" 1911 and 10mm are a perfect match.

The hot ticket today and what I want to try are the Loki grips. Super grip and a tad thicker than EG aluminum panels.

Yes I've been seeing some talk about those.  I'll have to take a look.

10mm semi-auto handguns / EAA: Now I get it
August 01 2018 11:07:37 AM MDT
So I finally got my EAA Hunter out to the range.  Only changes I made were to swap out the factory grips for Xtreme aluminums, and put in an 18 lb recoil spring.

The out-of-box factory trigger was 5-6 lbs and gritty.  A little disappointing - and I was contemplating a trigger job.  But after 150 rounds, it smoothed out to about 4lb.  Still a fair amount of take up but definitely smoother and more predictable.  I'm sure it will get even better.

Accuracy was impressive even from the beginning when the trigger was heavy.  Didn't do any strict testing but it was as or more accurate than many other 10mms I've shot.

I was shooting 180 and 200gr factory ammo from 1050 -1100 ft/sec.  With the 18lb spring, all casings were dropping predictably within 5-6 ft.  no 20 ft flyers like i had heard.

Only 150 rounds but 100% reliable.

The grip shape made the gun much more comfortable to shoot for longer periods of time than other platforms. No hot spots.  The Xtreme grips are a little thin for me so i may put the factory's back on, or try and find something in between.

Anyway highly impressed
