Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Hornady Lock N Load AP

This has been my experience with Hornady too. Excellent service. They rushed out a broken primer thingamagig for my LNL AP no questions asked.

This is from the Accurate Molds 160-BG mold. But with powdercoating and copper check, it is about 187gr with wheelweight.

With 9.9gr Blue Dot shot out of a 16" PCC I get ~1368-1343.

I wonder how much higher I can go. No signs of pressure clearly less boom than my various 165 and 180 FMJ loads. But there is so little data for 190gr boolits.

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook lists 10.3gr Blue Dot max for 180gr, and 9.6gr max for 200gr cast bullet, so I took the average and went 9.9.

The only 190gr data I've seen is in the Lee manual, Accurate #7 10.1 starting 11.2 max.

Miscellaneous 10mm Firearms / Re: My new 10mm DI

Just an update. After working on some things with Rudy at Macon Armory, mostly using a heavier buffer, and Rudy expanding the ejection port a bit, this thing eats (and poops out) anything and everything. I'm going to get the 45 ACP DI upper as well soon.

Currently with a Vortex Spitfire 3X Prism optic, although I am really liking the smaller and lighter Primary Arms MicroPrism on my Sig MPX.

Also swapped in a "Gas Buster" charging handle because I was getting some gas in the face. Solved that problem.

Some chrono info:

165gr FMJ 14.7 Accurate #9 1504-1508
180gr FMJ 10.9 Blue Dot 1406-1424 1 @ 1447.
187gr cast/PC 9.9gr Blue Dot 1368-1343 (I'm sure I can go hotter, but flying blind due to the weird weight).

Some pics of my cast and powdercoated 187gr boolits:

The aluminum are handmade from Matteson's checkmaker die (.011 and .014 flashing). The copper are Sage's checks.

The one on the far right is an old school Lee 175gr lubed boolit I first used for my 40 S&W, smokey AF! Fun to shoot out of my Glock 29 with comp barrel.

I'd sure like to know what powder they are using. These are one of the few hot loads my DI AR likes.

I tried plain base 30 cal in my M1 Garand hoping (stupidly) to save a penny or two more per shot.  After 1 clip the op rod wouldn't cycle correctly.  I was very concerned that I had bent it, but it turned out to just be lead build up in the gas cylinder.  That was enough to convince me.

Gas checks work great.  I have read that powder coat does great too, but I consider a bit of copper on the base good insurance for guns that are nearly 80 years old.

Yeah that seems to be the big fear with Desert Eagles (I have one), that the cylinder will get clogged, a very difficult fix in a DE. But there's a guy on YouTube who shoots powder coated 50AE without issue (he gas checks):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zepp97UwCSs

I have a 50 gas check die coming, along with my 10mm one. Better safe than sorry!

Looks nice.

Word of caution...Plain base cast bullets and gas systems don't play nice together.  Powder coat or gas check should be fine.

Thanks. Impatiently awaiting my gas check maker die(s). The lubed cast boolits I sent had gas checks.

Miscellaneous 10mm Firearms / My new 10mm DI

So I finally got my 10mm DI together. The upper from Macon Armory took like 9 months, but it's finally mated with an Angstadt Arms lower.  ;D

It eats (almost) everything I put into it. FMJ handloads, factory ammo, and even some cast boolits. The only issue involved some handloads I had made with AA #9 stovepiping (165gr FMJ 14.7gr AA #9). I'm thinking maybe the slower burn rate is messing with the timing. Other than that, it eats everything. I am having an issue with the last round bolt hold open, but I think that's a part issue.

Yes, I live in a non-free state, so please excuse the fin grip.

Looking forward to shooting some of my cheap powdercoated rounds through it.

I have one in 10mm, 40, 9mm, and 45. 10mm and 40 work great. 9mm not so much. I'm going to try some different buffers with the 9mm.

I have yet to try the 45 setup.

Oh, and yes Kenk, TNW support is horrendous. They just don't respond to email. You have to call them.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: 165 gr Critical Defense loads?

The COAL being slightly long was because of the rubber/poly tip sticking up past the end of the copper jacket.

OK, in your pulldown you gave two lengths for the bullet, not the cartridge. So was that OAL counting the rubber? Because minus the .0180" it's 1.251 OAL.  ;D

Reloading 10mm ammo / 165 gr Critical Defense loads?
August 11 2020 02:39:05 PM MDT
OK so I have 1000 165 gr Critical Defense bullets. So yeah, looking for some load ideas. Since it has a weird ogive, I can't just use any standard 165 loads and OAL's.

I see that The_Shadow did a pulldown of the Hornady Critical Defense, and revealed a C.O.A.L. of 1.2690 (which is of course way out of whack with most loads), but it doesn't look like anyone figured out the powder.

Yes I could just work it up a starting 165gr load and 1.269 OAL and check the primers? But I've never done that before, invent my own load.  :o

Honestly, when I bought these things in early 2019, I assumed that Hornady sold the bullets (not just loaded ammo) and there'd be load data.  :-[  You can see in the photo that they were pulled.

Thanks guys - yeah no duh, should've looked at Alliant's website.

I've seen the pulldowns section, very impressive, and why I first started following this forum; but since I'll be gifting some of these for Christmas, I don't want to emulate Underwood's fire and brimstone loads.  :))

So I'm looking for loads for some 165 FMJ FP's I got that were police/military pulldowns. I was shocked at the disparity between the Lyman 50th and the Lee Second Ed's. Lyman is way more conservative.

For example,

Lyman 165 TMJ
Powder          Start  Max
Power Pistol   7.8    8.7    (29K PSI)
Blue Dot         9.1    10.2  (27.4K PSI)
Unique           6.5     7.3    (27.3K PSI)

Lee 165 XTP
Powder          Start  Max
Power Pistol   8.8    10.0
Blue Dot         10.1  11.5c
Unique            7.3    8.3

WTH? That's like a totally different caliber (e.g., 40 vs 10mm)

Weirdly, both list 13.5/15 for Accurate #9 (but I don't have that powder).

All the Lyman loads are under 30K psi, while the Lee's are mid-30K, all the way up to 37.5K! Are Lyman just afraid of Glock chambers or what (they have a Glock warning for 40 S&W but not 10mm).

Ironically, Lyman's intro for the 10mm says, "The advertised muzzle velocity for a 200 grain bullet was 1200 FPS."  :))

So which manual should I believe? BTW this is for a Glock 20SF and a S&W 1006.

why don't you put a .40 S&W barrel & magazine in it?

Well because for one thing I have over 1000 10mm brass cases, and zero 40's. Number 2, I also shoot moderate and hot 10mm loads.

You wanna work down from 10mm data, not from 40 data.

I was kind of hoping someone here had done that already.  :))  Anybody, Bueller?

QuoteI would guess you are going to find that about 4.5 grains of 231 is about what you want.

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook lists 5.5 of 231 as the starting load for a 175 SWC 10mm. 4.3 in a 40.

I was hoping someone had already done all of this and had some load data.  >:(

Reloading 10mm ammo / Lite loads: How low can you go?
December 28 2017 09:06:16 PM MST
Hi all,

I've been reloading handguns a long time, but never autos until now. I like loading subsonic, indoor paper target loads for 357 & 44. But I don't see any such loads for the 10. Can one use 40 data without risking too high of pressures? Looks like plenty of 800FPS-ish loads for the 40.

I'm currently loading for a Lee cast 175gn SWC. Weirdly, the Lee manual lists no loads for that bullet. The lowest in the Lyman manual are about 1050 FPS. Actual weight with lube is 162, since they are pure linotype. I have 296, 231, CFE, and Power Pistol.

Glock 20SF with Lone Wolf compensated barrel, BTW. I am aware too light a load might not cycle, but I'm more concerned about pressures. TIA!
