General Discussion / Re: Welcome to 10mm-auto.com

Thank you very much, great to know the community is back!

You do not want to build your hobbies in the back yards of people who despise your hobby, it just gives them power over you.

For discussion a text based forum like this is actually a better medium anyways.

Great pics! Yeah I like to see what will show up, you never know what will!

I think you have to look at gel tests to know for sure. I have never seen HST not expand in any test. I am especially concerned if it's a bonded duty round like Critical Duty. Gold Dot has done well in short barrel tests I've seen but not as well as HST.

I usually want the more powerful round, but in my small Glock 43 I prefer a more pleasant round to shoot. Some +P 115gr has low recoil such as Corbon DPX or Hornady Handgun Hunter monoflex.

I usually carry standard pressure in my GLock 43 but some of the +P like the 115gr monoflex I mention above shoots pleasantly, the pressure rating is because the longer copper bullet seats back further in the case.

Good even expansion and sharp petals. All tests penetrated around 12in with one penetrating to 11.5in.

This is accurate and has low recoil in my Glock 43.

General Discussion / Re: What to clean and how often

I tend to clean my pistols every 100-200 rounds but I could probably do it less.

One factor that influences me is if the pistol or rifle may have been around moisture whether it be the elements or sweat. I like to get a protective coating on them. Obviously as far as fouling the bore, you won't need it after only 50-100 rounds.

Factory Ammo / Re: Underwood?s Bonded GD 147gr +P+

It's good quality stuff. One thing to consider is it will typically expand more but penetrate less.

I cannot remember if it was 147 or 124 but in my tiny Glock 43 with the standard spring it did not recycle as reliably as the other stuff. One or two in 100 would fail to feed. In other glocks I have heard they cycle fine.

Those look great. I am excited to shoot something with the few boxes I have picked up.

I would have told him they do wear out the barrel due to armor-piercing hydrostatic shock.

The 180-200gr XTP is proven beyond doubt.

The 200gr Federal Fusion is probably best I think but I am not sure it would matter. If you do want the Fusion I would get it while it is in stock ... I just found a few boxes after waiting over a
year.

As others have said a reliable 180-200gr bullet will do. I would also read some other threads here including my own on hunting wild hogs, lots of useful info.

Seems like an interesting nitch to me. Bigger than .380 but just a little smaller than 9mm.

Ballistically it seems equivalent to the Corbon 95gr DPX in 9mm. 1300fps out of a short barrel but for a pocket pistol I could see the slightly smaller size making a meaningful difference.

It appears the Swift A-Frame bullets now available in some handgun calibers match exactly what I was looking for. They are like a partition but with a bonded front end and with the copper partition further forward, so they will expand some but retain 90-95% of their weight. It appears these expand just a little but are a happy medium between an XTP and Hardcast.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. What I will do is for now I will carry my 200gr XTPs and then when there are Underwood 200gr hardcast in stock I will buy some and verify they do not tumble.

I know from other threads here that both a good JHP/Softpoint or hardcast can be effective for hunting purposes, but I am wondering how necessary hardcast or xtreme penetrator solid copper bullets are if you are carrying for animal defense where there are no brown bears. So let's say you are carrying your 10mm as backup when hunting/fishing and you need to stop a 250-350 pound boar charge. Assuming reasonable shot placement would you feel much better with an XTreme Penetrator or hardcast than with a good hunting hollow point or soft point?

Just to clarify by a hunting JHP/Softpoint I mean a 180-200 grain bullet known to expand more conservatively like the XTP or Trophy Bonded.

The motivation for my question is that right now I have limited ammunition to test and I know that XTPs are extremely reliable in my Glock 40. I have not tested XTreme Penetrators in my Glock but I believe they  would likely be more reliable than hardcast. I have tested a few boxes of 200gr hardcast and know they cycle in my gun but I would have to do some more testing for accuracy. I have an Alpha Wolfe barrel with traditional rifling and it is a good product but I want to use the factory Glock barrel because of its looser fit (and I don't need the competition accuracy).

Thanks!

It's fun to get close to wild animals. The last few weekends I have had a small six point walk within 5 yards of me and he doesn't flee when we walk up within 25 yards of him. When he is a larger legal buck here I don't see him lasting long haha, though if he is that tame I will not shoot him. I wasn't able to hunt much last year but this year I plan to get a few does, they all taste great!
