10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: Springfield Ronin

Agreed, but you know bean counters... .0001 cent saving on tool head main maintenance, .1 cent savings not buying, stocking and installing a pin. Savings today add up to bonuses all around and costs to repair are deductible :-)  Forget about customer ill will, there are lots of other cows who are hungry for your stuff :-) Gads, the business mindset is infuriating.

I worked and retired from IBM PC development (you youngsters out there won't know the company or products) and you wouldn't believe the cost reduction hoops I had to jump through to test and certify cost reduction schemes. Forget how much certification testing cost, .1 cent per part, times 100 parts times 100,000 units built per month adds up.

We (employees) used to say "a couple of million dollars here, a few hundred thousand dollars there, and pretty soon you're talking about REAL money". :-)

Any updates?
Thanks.

The Ronin came back in stellar condition as did the loaded target. I liked it enough to buy a Ronin LW Commander in 9mm which I never did fire before converting it to a .38 super. The Springfield LW is now in my carry rotation with my Colt LW Commander in super.

To satisfy any Q before it's asked, I cast / powder coat and reload a number of pistol calibers (10mm,. 40, 9x25, .357 Sig, .357 Mag, 38 special, .38 super, .45acp, .45 Colt, and 7mm BR)  and I am in the process of divesting myself of my few 9's as everything I have can easily duplicate 9's but not the other way around.

Let me say right from the start, I'M A DAN WESSON FAN BOY!

If you can find a VBOB 10mm, jump on it!

Preachin' to the choir there... I have a Bruin and Vigil but DW doesn't make (if they ever did it's now not worth the hunt or $$'s for one) a compact steel frame .40 which I initially want more than a 10 for a dual caliber. The .40 according to Bambi Secret agent kicks too hard (DW must agree as they don't offer a.40?) so I had the good fortune to stumble on this one.

I shot the RIA yesterday and it's Faarrr better than I thought it would be, tack accurate, and reliable with any ammo I fed it, and it shoots way better than the modest $679 MSRP would imply and I would say easily as good as my Vigil in Super. As a ."hard kickin' .40" That says a lot!

10mm semi-auto handguns / 10mm Commander sized pistols
September 16 2022 10:34:03 PM MDT
I have a Bul SS commander in .357 Sig and an all steel RIA commander in .40. I'm thinking of a replacement 10mm barrel for the RIA. Anyone have a steel 10mm commander sized pistol to comment on?

I like the RIA Ultra 10mm, shoot all day Sunday, reload on  the next Friday :-)

I got a .357 Sig long slide for it too...Wooo hooo!

.45 Colt, yet another caliber I've had on the back burner for too long.

Well, re-reloading the 10 and .45 is getting to be a blast :-)

I've been shooting .40's, 9x25 and .357 Sig for a very long time and I have dusted off my long slides and am working up loads for them. Recently I scored 8 pounds of red dot and working loads up with it and other powders I've had for a while. I kinda put the 10 and .45 on the back burner but I have many thou bullets I've cast up and coated along with the Sig and 9x25 bullets to keep the furnaces going.

Now that the weather is nicer I can also give the new chronograph a go. More to come.

$2500 is a bit too spendy for a gun that's going to get beat up.  I have three Kimber 10mm, all full size, and they do everything I need them to.  The Custom TLE II is a work of art too, and came in at under $1000 used.

Agreed, The dealer I first mentioned above jacked the asking price up to $2800... I'll have to see if that works for him.

As it is, If I were to build it at Kimber, a "standard jagare" without the optic, or ported barrel. A standard barrel, FL guide rod, and extended slide stop with decent fixed sights and lightened slide with the frame treatments (something like a Rapide in 6") might get my master card out :-)

Oh well, I got the 5" and 6" 10mm's covered already... any thing added like the jagare would just be conspicuous consumption on my part.

Before going with a G20, look at the Glock model 40 10mm longslide. It also comes stock with the MOS sight mount, replaceable back straps, KKM has a 7" bbl for it, AND the mag release is reversible. Once a right handed shooter uses their middle finger on the right hand to dump themag, they'll wonder why all RH guns are not reversible :-)

That ALMOST makes me want to get a Glock model 40!

10mm semi-auto handguns / I made a bad ASSumption :-)
April 22 2022 08:56:06 PM MDT
I have a most excellent Tanfoglio Hunter (6" barrel with lightened slide from the factory) and it came with one mag. I figured not to worry, I also have a number of .40 mags from different generations for my race .40. Tanfo. I ASSumed the several .40 mags I have without the dimpled spacer in the rear were suitable for their 10mm large frame. WRONG! I had no idea that Tanfo put the spacer in the FRONT of the mag essentially making them a one round mag :-)

So in order to preempt any future mag capacity bans I ordered six 14 round 10 mags from EAA. What a surprise that using the MAG25 "coupon" the price went from something like $39 to 25 bucks. I originally planned on six mags but with the large discount I bought six mags for less than the price of four.

So, if you have a Tanfo 10mm (maybe  their other calibers are on sale also) now is a good time to stock up!

PS, yes... Patriot defense and others have them also but these are priced pretty good.

Oh, and the Tanfo Hunter has THE slimmest high cap 10mm frame on the market. Get one! :-)

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: The desired 10mm crimp
April 21 2022 09:23:50 PM MDT
In my revolver loads I crimp pretty hard but to where they still pass the plunk test. After losing what I thought was a good crimp and a bullet losing its crimp and locking up the cylinder. I feel better with more crimp than less.

One problem overall is having mixed head stamp brass with different numbers of firings. Some are shorter than others (up to .020") and the shorter ones can more readily lose a crimp on full power loads. So when setting up my crimp die I set for the shortest sized case I find, and make sure the longest still plunks.

After setting up once for that I can forget the crimp op totally.

Oh, I use setscrew locking rings on my dies in my Dillon presses, the old style they used to have do not cut it here and I threw them out.

I have used nearly the same bullet (home cast) since the 80's and what you'll find is the lube is smoky no getting around that, one thing for sure some powders make it worse.

I cleaned a bunch by boiling and washing them in acetone after I started powder coating a year or so ago and never looked back... powder coating is the way to go for more than the smoke issue. You can load PC'd bullets more like TMJ's, the barrel bore stays clean as does the exterior of the gun and YOUR interior :-)

Unfortunately in my zeal to load before Florida's summer a few winters back I made over a thousand of the smoke makers so I use up 50 at a time when I go to the range with the PC's bullets. Whatever you do, shoot a couple of hundred with the wax lube before making my mistake of loading too many.

A Tanfoglio P-Carry in 10mm would be a nice Carry option
Agreed, even though I have a Witness Hunter I'm seriously thinking about a Witness P.

I know it's an older post but FYI Winchester also made it for LEO use only. It can be  found at gun shows from time to time
