Rifles / Re: Lever Gun for general purpose
June 17 2023 07:07:35 AM MDT
Henry does make some great stuff, but don't over look the Browning BLR. The two are very similar in design. Ive never used the Henry but I had a BLR 308 for a few years. I have never hunted small game with a rifle with such calibers as the 22 Hornet or 223. Here in MN an expanding type bullet is required for hunting and I would think that type of bullet in those calibers would destroy any small game animal if you were intending to harvest the animal for consumption. I do have a Marlin 1894 CS in 357 Mag that is an amazing rifle. Although I think this caliber too would leave any small game unusable it would be a good deer rifle "if need be". I have never hunted small game with a 357 Mag either, so I dont know for sure.  POF does make a 9mm Lever action, but starting at $1962 Im not sure I would go that route.

Reloading / Loading question
May 13 2023 09:41:55 AM MDT
I am going to be loading some 30-40 Krag for my father in law. He gave me some 180 grain Winchester soft points. I am curious about loads for this. DO you think I can use data from any book such as Hornady, Nosler or Speer.

General Discussion / Re: Non toxic options
May 10 2023 07:43:54 AM MDT
Thanks fellas. I did take the Barnes VOrtx rounds to the range I have the 44 mag. I had decent groups at 50 yards with these out of a 7 1/2" Ruger Super Redhawk topped with a Burris 2-7x32 Handgun scope. SO maybe Ill just get a couple of boxes of those and take the 44 Mag to the areas with lead ammunition ban, if/when that happens. I have a few friends that are game wardens from my LEO days. I shoot them a text too. I appreciate the help on this. Ill keep my eye out for the other options.

General Discussion / Non toxic options
May 07 2023 10:13:54 AM MDT
So I have been hearing some talk lately of a Federal ban on lead ammunition for hunting on Federal Lands. I know the easy choice would to avoid Federal lands. But where I live, alot of the land I hunt is Federal. Both Refuges and Waterfowl Production Areas. For my 20 gauge slug gun, Iam fine. Ive been buying copper rounds since last winter in anticipation of this. First time I heard about it was last fall. If your curious, the Browning are my fave and give me the best accuracy in my Savage 220. Closely followed by Federal and Hornady. I have loads developed for my 6.5 CM, 308 Win and 243 Win with Barnes, so no issue there. But handguns? What your experience with non toxic ammo? I have a box of Barnes Vor-TX for the 44 Mag and 41 Mag. But I havent shot them. Are there other options besides barnes. I would like to take a deer with the handgun. Until MN implements a lead ban on state lands, that is where I would have to go. I have a box of Underwood Xtreme Hunter for the 44 Mag, but the bullet looks like the penetrator. Does this bullet expand at all? MN requires an expanding bullet for hunting. SO I am not sure if these would be legal.

I used some Brenneke slugs in my Savage 220 for sight in. They were not sabot but the box said good for smooth and rifled barrels. They were accurate but when I switched to fine tune with Browning Sabots, my point of aim was way off. But I have never had any accuracy issues with Brenneke in 12 or 20 gauge. I think you would need to try a box and then compare them to the slugs you will use for hunting. Hopefully your hits wont be to far off. If you have difficulty finding sabots let me know. I wont be using my 12 gauge anytime soon now that I have the Savage bolt action 20 gauge. I have 12 gauge slugs.

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: For us Taurus Fans...
April 28 2023 06:22:19 PM MDT
I will be interested in seeing how this one works out. I love my Taurus revolvers. The semi auto on the other had I have not enjoyed. Although I have not heard one bad thing about the GCX4. I am curious if there is a release date. It seems to have been in the works for over a year now. There were a couple of videos and articles from Jan 2022. It is not listed on the Taurus website. Did Tarus scrap this?

General Discussion / Finally getting nice
April 11 2023 06:51:20 AM MDT
We are finally getting nice weather here in MN. Today will be a range day for me. At least for a couple of hours. It will be a nice break from studying. Unless I have been sleeping or busy at work I have had my head buried in text books since the second week of January. Getting to the end of the class. MY subject this week is OB, Neonate and Pediatric emergencies. Next week is Flight physiology. And then the next two weeks is spent getting ready for the test. Im ready to be done. And we have a new puppy coming home on Thursday. German Shorthair Pointer and the breeder sent us pics last night of pointing and retrieving her first live bird. She is 8 weeks old today. Excited to get to work with this pup and hopefully get her out in the field this fall. I hope all of you have a wonderful day.

Handguns / Re: 30 Super Carry

I still haven?t gotten one. Although Scheels is making it tempting. The Shield Plus is marked down to $349 last time I was in there. They have two brands of ammo. Remington and Speer. Remington is marked down to $12.99/20 rounds. I think the will go the way of the 45 GAP. So I dont think I will get one.

Factory Ammo / Re: Sellier Bellot Ammo

I have purchased ammo from them several times. Shipping cost was by weight. The last time I ordered there was a running total on the top of the screen letting you know how much more you could get for that shipping rate. Shipping was quick.

Political discussion / Re: AR Pistol Brace Debacle
January 20 2023 09:13:23 AM MST
I am probably going to get beat to death...but here it goes. I am in no way, shape or form saying these firearms should be illegal. I've had one in the past, I sold it to someone who really wanted it and have considered another one. I am saying the NFA needs to be repealed.  And this is my opinion only.

In my opinion if people would have used the braces as designed this would not be an issues. But you can go to youtube and find hundreds if not thousands of videos of ar/ak pistols being shouldered. The definition of a pistol is "to be held with one hand". Once the pistol is shouldered, is it still a pistol? OR even resting you cheek on the brace. Same with forward grips. If you put a forward grip you have changed the design of the pistol to now be held with two hands. When I had my 300BO pistol, I shouldered it.

Again, in my opinion I think "AR Pistols" is a short barreled rifle. When I was on the SWAT team I was issued a SBR with a 10.5" barrel. Other than caliber the only difference was one had a magpul adjustable stock and the other had a brace. They were nearly the same length with the pistol being a touch shorter. But not much. Does that mean I think people should have to go through a lengthy application process, pay a fee, and register it. Hell no. If I want an Ar pistol or a SBR I should be able to get it through the normal process of acquiring any other firearm. Same with supressors. If I want one I should be able to get one without jumping a bunch of hurdles.

With that being said, I am considering getting an AR Pistol but this time 7.62x39 to match the rifle I may or may not have.

Now the wait for Springfield to send me the optic plate. <sigh>

That is annoying Springfield dont put them in the box. I did not take very long for Springfield to ship it out though.

I had my red dots before I knew about shake awake. The couple I do use for defense I just change my batteries every 6 months depending on how much I carry it.

Reloading / Re: Well I am still here!!
January 06 2023 02:25:30 PM MST
I do most of my reloading during the winter months. Ive been trying to get most of it done here recently. I start a Critical Care Paramedic class next week and since the overtime isnt really there at my current employer, which is where I make my play money, I have picked up a second job starting in a couple of weeks. But I loaded 100 rounds 6.5 CM for range ammo and 60 Barnes TTSX for the 6.5 CM for hunting. Working on 300 rounds of 44 Magnum. Will get to some 9mm and 41 Magnum yet this winter.

Ive forgotten to take ammo to the range before. In fact, just before deer season I drove 30 miles to sight in the slug guns with my dad. Got to the range to discover I left the shotgun sitting on the bed at home. So 30 miles home and 30 miles back to the range.
