Rifles / Ruger buys Marlin
October 01 2020 05:36:05 PM MDT
Ruger paid 3 million I heard, and is moving the machinery to one of their plants. Hopefully this will mean good quality lever guns, in the not too distant future.
I would like to see a Trapper model in a 327 caliber and a 41 mag too. I realize that Henry makes some smaller calibers and these 2 are readily available. But not in a Trapper model, and certainly not in a side loading port.
Hmmmm what can be done about the safeties that are on the newer models?  I still like a half cock safety, on my older Winchester.
  Lever guns are fun.

Wildcats / Re: Any love for the .41 Special?

How did I miss this?
Yes the 41 special is a great round. Aye you can down load the magnum cartridge, but like stated before, with a shorter case the sp shines with faster burning powders. Blue Dot, N105, are great and of course you can go with H110 if you use the 170gr Sierra.
As far as the handguns in this chamber it's a custom proposition as has been said. The old three screw Single Actions make great 41 specials. The Ruger 101 can be used a s if you wanted to go S&W, the model 19 is an awesome choice.
Cast bullets have been the choice for many who decided to go the special route. And actually a 200gr running 950fps or faster is no slouch.  With the smaller pills such as the Sierra 170gr,, they can be cranked out as fast as you can do it, depending upon your gun choice or especially the cylinder if it is to be a 6 shot or a 5 shot. But why go to a 5 in a special? The guns that have been used to produce a 41 sp  have been strong enough that they can handle magnum pressures.
Shot placement is easier when a person can handle the lighter gun and the recoil. This was part of the choices when it came to the 41sp, or the 44 sp. Smaller frames lighter guns made all day carry easier. Less recoil was always welcome in most crowds. The is better when a quick follow up shot is needed.
What is not too like with a 41 sp?
Dies,,,, The Lee die will not flare the mouth on the 41sp why? Because the special is too short. I have managed to use a small spacer in between the bell mouth part and the screw adjustment. Not a big problem. This move eliminated me having to but some other brand of dies to achieve the same results. Just a heads up.
Bullets cast is fine for some things,, but if you want to go jacketed, and especially if you want to hunt with the 41 mag or special USE premium bullets.

Not a thing will be done about her or others that are guilty of treason and or sedition. Until we can get laws changed to be more clear, and hopefully not have to deal with a liberal judges interpretation of said laws.

So I bought a single stack RIA 10mm very nice gun, I put in a flat bottom firing pin stop and polished the barrel feed ramp before ever firing the gun. I sent about 200 rounds of my normal cast load down range today. Gun ran flawlessly only thing is I did notice a very light leading in the barrel I've never noticed in my S&W 1076 or Springfield RO elite 10mm. Very pleased with this weapon especially for the price. I'm guessing as the barrel gets broken in it may not have any leading? Or is the barrel a little bit bigger diameter and that's the reason for the leading. I haven't plugged and measure the barrel on the other two but they seen a lot of fmj rounds before I started into running cast rounds.

Light leading I would not worry about, and it will probably decrease with time.  Probably just some chatter in the steel from cutting the rifling.

And congrats on the gun. It is a well made 1911 that will provide years of service.
Yes congratulations on the gun mine has been accurate. As far as the leading, I have a suggestion. First put a couple hundred jacketed bullets down range. This helps with chatter marks. Next clean the barrel, and use JBs paste to do a final slicking and smoothing up.  Brownells sells JBs..... and it is suggested to use felt that is sold separately. No need just follow directions using a very tight cotton cloth.
I agree it's probably light tool marks.

10mm Hunting / Re: RMR or Red Dot
September 12 2020 05:13:01 AM MDT
I have been using the Ulta-Dot on revolvers, and got used to them. Switching back to my Semi Autos, with irons was an abrupt change in the hunting arena. I tried a friends fast fire and as some of stated, I had to hunt for the dot. It definitely caused me to have to lower the muzzle. I was told by a few guys that there is enough difference in the RMR and the tube types that you sort of have to get use to using each type.
Anyone found this to be true?
Another thing I noticed is that the 3MOA dot was fine for targets but reflected back in my face too much and sort of gave the starburst effect at night hunting hogs. Switching to a 1moa and the 2MOA helped tremendously.
I will be trying out the new Burris when it comes out. Good info here. Thanks.
Also this has me wondering how things will work out with a heavy load and slamming the reflex around?  Was strongly considering the Trijicon for the size and the small 1moa dot strictly for hunting.
Now I am wondering how well it might hold up. Shooting the gun only a few times each month hunting, might be ok, as opposed to shooting competition.

10mm Hunting / Re: Swift 10mm
September 12 2020 04:56:40 AM MDT
I am glad others have ask about having a 10mm bullet to our availability. Suggestions are sometimes rejected out right and sometimes considered. What helps us is, a major manufacturer will pick up that said bullet and start loading it. Federal has purchased 100,000 of the 10mm with plans to load. I was told the 200gr will come out first. When????  I cannot get an answer. Let's stop and remember that load testing will have to take place, so next year? Maybe an unveiling at the shot show if they have one this coming year.
Hmmmm a virtual shot show?
As far as a hunting bullet, I believe this one will be hard to beat. I am anxious to get some and do some testing.
Cost,,,,, Yes they are not cheap but with all things considered, such as (here in Texas) either a lease, or owning property, plus money spent on gas, food, sometimes Motel, or a spot to park a Travel trailer, or extra fuel to get it to a lease,  a good pistol,,,,,,, they are not so bad. Now I certainly do not practice or play with them. That would be foolish for me personally.
I also know that it cost a lot of money and time to make a bullet, and bring it into production.
I never want to hear about someone having bullet failure. Loosing any animal, to bullet failure would be very disappointing. Be it a trophy, a grandchild's first, or whatever. If I was to choose a bullet in 100mm to hunt larger game, and especially considering a Bear,,,, well a Swift Aframe is the choice.
I have seen first hand what the Aframe does in other calibers. It works.
So I am ready to see what this 10mm bullet will do. If it performs like the rest of the Aframes, no problems. I will keep you all informed as much as I can on this. Thank you.

Working up loads for the NEW Swift 10mm bullets. Go to swiftbullets.com  and click on bullets,,,
You will have to scroll all the way down to get a look at them. Please note the OAL of each bullet.
This can be used to safely extrapolate a load from another manufacturer or to start out with Quick Load. I think that Speer and Hornady bullets are a little shorter

I will tell you right now that if you could run one of these Aframes to 3000fps it would not hurt it and it's not going to come apart. Swift bullets are tough and have the most bullet integrity of any bullet I have used.

10mm Hunting / Re: Swift 10mm

I should have posted the website. The bullets are at the bottom of the page where the revolver bullets are  please note the length of the bullets. This can make a difference if you are attempting to extrapolate a load from a different bullet  manufacture. Brad is working on loads the next few days with powders on hand. I did tell him that Aa#9 is one of the better powders plus Vhitavouri N105. If need be we can move load info to another part of the forum thanks guys. BTW I do hope these bullets will be a game changer for those of us that want to hunt with the 10mm

10mm Hunting / Swift 10mm
September 10 2020 11:17:34 AM MDT
Hello everyone. This maybe old news to some, but if it is new for you, I hope you think it is good.
Swift bullets has just released their new 10mm bullets. One in 180gr and the other in 200gr.
These are not cheap as they are premium bullets. They are the Aframe design. They are tough and retain almost all their weight. They expand well and will work well for hogs and deer. But I would like to see how they will perform on larger game. Shots most likely will have to be kept at 50yds or closer. I have been able to shoot decent groups at 100,,, but shooting an animal at that distance is a different matter. Did we need a different or better bullet? I strongly felt so.
Federal ordered Some of these to load, but inquiring of such, I was told that it might be next year before the ammo is released.  Not sure how good my source is, and in one respect, I might can understand, since there has to be load development and a possibility of reduced workers or whatever associated with the  Covina crap. Hopefully not so. Other info I was given was that Federal was going to load the 200gr first.  We will see.
Anyway I look forward to handloading and testing the said bullets. I have used Swift's bullets in other calibers and the results were stellar.
I use a semi auto myself, but considered some people that I know with revolvers thinking of loading them long, for an increase in velocity.
