Reloading / Re: Is 100 rounds a lot??
June 18 2023 11:51:33 AM MDT
I tend to use my single stage much more than my progressive. My 10mm and .40SW rounds are more boutique and load in smaller quantities because lately I haven't been to the range to test them out. I have the bagged and labeled what they are so that I can fall back to know what tests best.

Sqlbullet, have you tried a separate dish, bowl of alcohol to cut the lube, finish off? Sorry to chime in so late, hiw did you solve this?

AA5 is my go to powder when I want my loads to bark a bit. I really like it for 9mm but I tend to shoot more .40. That powder makes those loads, rounds perform more like my carry loads.

I've seen that on the shelves at Home Depot too.

I enjoy having the variety to experiment with the powders mentioned above. I'm curious why accuracy isn't a priority. I'm always looking for accuracy.

I tend to use the Lee Factory Crimp Die often. I have pulled bullets and not seen any changes. My dies are adjusted with just enough to neck tension. I tend to not lean on mine and case gauge them all after.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Working up 220g loads

I like the idea of the .460 Rowland. I prefer Magnum type loads and believe that would fit the bill for me. It's been a couple of years since it caught my interest, I think the cost of the conversion has me stopped. The brass and reloads don't bother me a bit.

Whoops, I just saw the next thread that explains it. Sorry folks.

I'm not a newbie by any mean but the 220 grain slug. What are you loading this round for? Does it have any advantage for hunting or is this a round for competition? Power factor, Unicorns ???? Do I need this in my inventory?

Yikes!  Average of 5 is 1364 ft/s with the 217 gr HPs with 11.2 gr acc#9 behind them.  I should not have loaded so many.  The casings were not cracked and there was no blown primers or gas cutting around them.  I can never really tell if primers are flattened or not.  The brass went in the trash to be on the safe side.  If I load any more of these HPs, I will back the charge down at least a grain and see what that looks like.

Lesson learned.  Trying to work up a load based on the weight and length of the projectile is not the thing to do.  From now on, I will use the projectile I will be hunting with.  I wasted a lot of time, powders, brass, and shot with these 220 gr TMJs and the data doesn't look like it is transferable; nearly 100 ft/s difference.

The gun seemed to handle them ok so I will keep the ones I already loaded and use them on deer next season where I would only be shooting one or two at a time.  On the positive side, the group size went down to about 2" at 50 yards.  Still disappointing accuracy but better than the 4" it was getting with other bullets.  I still think I will trade this one in for a JR carbine in a few months when I can save up some money.

Yes those are some nutty velocities. Do you have a 5 inch 1911 you can test those rounds and post the results?

So they would be willing to switch the ejection port for a lefty if I was willing to pay, correct? That would have been ideal with the Sub 2000, but the brass deflector seems to work ok, drops the brass right at my feet

Really, the brass drops at your feet???
I've seen those in the past but never heard anyone review the brass deflector.
I've thought in the past to make one out of ABS and use a foam 2 way tape to adhere it. Maybe I will do that sometime soon.

Evening Current Resident, a few things that really helped mitigate recoil that shouldn?t have been there in the first place are from Missouri Tactical, and found on Amazon, their rubber butt pad  - $21.00, and their Buffer Washer, looks like a rubber lifesaver that slides onto the recoil spring for something like $12.00. The final thing to help with it?s straight blow-back system is M*Carbo?s Recoilless weighted / tool - less charging handle. The combination of the 3 things made a night and day difference, and is so much more fun to shoot now. I haven?t shot a lot of blow back PCC?s other than my 1095TS 10mm, which has a shock absorption system built into the butt pad, but has substantially less recoil than the Sub in my opinion. It?s kind of funny, I?ve never thought of a 9 as having much for recoil after shooting lots of .45?s and 10?s over the years, but the Kel-Tec design changed that thought process

My trade is Fabrication and Professional Tinkerer. Like yourself I enjoy a challenge and project.
What I did leave out in my post yesterday was that I did put a buffer in it as well as I made a wrap and put it on the receiver tube. The wrap is not pretty, custom cut foam padding set in place with electrical tape. I tried different thickness trying to get an optimal cheek weld, I ended up with a standard 1/8" foam because anything thicker makes it difficult to use the OEM sights.
As far the the buffer, I used a yellow garden hose washer that fit the opening well enough and haven't had a single issue with it.
Last thing I did was tape up the seams on the buttstock because I have a short beard and getting pinched isn't fun.
Glock 22 round mags makes range outings fun and interesting. .40sw rocks and makes me very happy.
Safe shooting everyone.

:-I just love mine in .40sw. The only upgrade mine has seen is a $20.00 laser and a Bushnell optic. It's never had a factory round shot through it. Sometimes I get a surprise with my cheek on the stock and the recoil gives me a bit of a slap. The lighter the round it seems the harder the recoil. I really enjoy mine.

Ken, sorry I didn't see your reply,  no not one single issue with any type feeding or function.

The only thing that ever stopped me was one of my reloads got stuck in the chamber. It was a live round, and the pucker factor was elevated as I worked with an RSO on the range trying to get it unstuck.
With the muzzle pointed downrange, we inserted a pie e of brass round stock through the muzzle and thumped it with a hammer.
I believe that the problem was that the case mouth didn't have enough crimp. From that point on I bought FCD from Lee in most of my calibers and not had a problem since.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: 180gr Federal HST and 231

You got some good advice here with both replies. All of the powders suggested by Shadow are WAY BETTER than 231.
My opinion is that 231, HP38 are both for plinking.
Blue Dot and Longshot get my vote first. CFE Pistol and Auto Comp would be my next choices.
I do like CFE due to its versatility in its entire line up.
When it comes to .40SW and 10MM, I tend to run them toward max because I like a spicier load.

Best wishes friend, safe shooting to all.
