Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Nosler 135 accuracy?
April 26 2023 07:26:57 PM MDT
Yeah, I get the bearing surface thing, it's not helpful. I miked these at .39985" the other night as I recall, the 180 XTP .40035" with a Browne and Sharp micrometer. Half a thou difference. It's also a bit challenging getting adequate neck tension, even using brand new Starline brass with extra sizing steps and a small expander. I was just curious if anybody else had much luck with them. I'll be sticking with the XTP's and Gold Dots I believe.

By the way, the Tisas 10mm has a nice tight chamber and great support. Loads pushing the 155 XTP at 1550 fps only expanded the case to .43005". I've enjoyed working with the 1911 platform again and will be shelving the Glocks for a while, if not permanently.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Nosler 135 accuracy?
April 26 2023 06:34:39 PM MDT
Has anyone actually been able to get these things to shoot? I picked up 750 of them some time ago for a good price, and not having much luck out of a couple different 40's as well as two Glock 10 mils with KKM barrels and more recently (today) a Tisas D10 5" 1911. I just haven't been able to get decent groups out of them at all, in any handgun. Anyone else?

10mm semi-auto handguns / Re: New Tisas Yukon Carry
April 14 2023 04:34:43 AM MDT
According to a recent post by Tisas, we should see this in May. I just picked up the D10 model, and it's a hell of a lot of gun for the money based on features and internals. I detail stripped it as soon as I got it home, and not a single MIM part to be found. Very nicely finished inside and out. I installed a flat bottom firing pin stop and a Wilson flat wire recoil spring and short guide rod set and it's running fine. I'm definitely picking up the Yukon when it gets released.

Interesting detour, ha.

It had been a minute since I've purchased any Underwood 10mm stuff, in fact my old stash is loaded in brass cases and in 50 round boxes. So I ordered a few boxes of 180 XTP (no more Gold Dot it seems) to test a more recent offering.  I also grabbed a couple boxes of Sig V-Crown 180's locally mainly due to the positive results of a couple YouTube videos I saw.  I generally load my own, but do use factory stuff occasionally when carrying, and I do like nickel plated factory loads for long term storage in a couple mags.

Chronographed them today in my KKM factory length barreled Glock 20, and my KKM factory length Glock 29.

New Underwood 180 XTP, Glock 29, 1196 fps.
Same load, Glock 20 1282 fps.

Sig V-Crown 180, Glock 29, 1249 fps.
Same load, Glock 20, 1304 fps.

Seems as though the Sig ammo is out Underwooding the Underwood stuff these days...It's the real deal for sure!  And YouTube gel testers have had great results as well. By comparison, my older Underwood 180 Gold Dot loads clocked 1290 and 1360 in the 29 and 20.

My usual load of the Gold Dot 180 with 9.5 Longshot runs 1275 in the short 29, and 1325-ish in the 20.

Interesting. Those bullets are nearly identical to the Double Tap 200. Meplat is the same as close as I can measure, and they are .638" with the gas check. I'd be happy with the NOE but I don't cast anymore. Appreciate the info.

highxj, how did your brass look with the 800X loads?  Did you see bulges or smiles?

Negative, the rims were a bit nicked up though. Otherwise, nothing close to a smile.

Those powders will work to get them up to good velocities...

CFE Pistol Powder test
135 grain HST over 10.2 grains CFE Pistol seated to 1.2500"
CCI 350 primer Star*-*Line Brass (used but pass-through reconditioned)
Velocity 1672 fps from the Glock 20 factory barrel, Wolff non captive recoil rod & 22lb spring.  Max case expansion is 0.4325"

800X gets them up there with 11.8 grains but they might start to smile the brass

Today I shot up to 10.2 CFE Pistol with the Nosler 135, Starline brass, Fed standard primer. Averaged 1510 in my KKM 4.6". I know there are infinite variables, but I'm 160 fps behind you. I can't imagine magnum primers having much of a difference, but I'm going to run the load again with them. I'm shooting this bullet out of a 5" Walther PPQ 40 at 1550 fps.

I went up to 12.2 800X for 1610 fps in the Glock 20 and 1530 in the 29.

I've never seen 135 HST's..

I remember you Tony, we met at a varmint shoot many years ago. You had some big caliber AR conversion.

Very true sqlbullet, these LBT style designs definitely maximize powder space with a given bullet weight. I had many custom molds Veral Smith made me for my big revolvers back before those style bullets were commercially available.

Yep, they're good to go. I've shot quite a few of them and they feed/function fine in both my 20 and 29. I had to back down to 8.3 Longshot for 1210 in the 20 and 1150 in the 29. I just thought it was curious that I'd never read any mention of this problem with the WFN bullets in Glock mags. Something to be aware of for people loading these bullet profiles in their Glocks..

Oh yes, I've seen that CFE test of yours. Stunning increase in velocity over the book results. It's one I've never tested in the 10, I put some together last night along with 800x. The annoying thing is, I've done load testing with a few of these powders some years ago with the 135 and lost all my data  :(

Reloading 10mm ammo / DT 200 WFN seating depth.

I see quite a few of you using cast 200+ gr. flat nose bullets. I've been loading the DT 200 WFN bullets and ran into a surprise issue some time back that I thought I'd share. I worked up a load of Longshot at 1200 fps, seated to 1.260". Shot great, functioned fine, perfect. Imagine my surprise to find the cartridges were binding in my Glock mags when I attempted to load more than about 7 or 8. The big meplat was jamming up on the inside front radius. I found I had to seat them to 1.232" in order to eliminate the binding and allow a full 15 rounds, which of course required reducing the powder charge accordingly.

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this issue.. I'd never seen it mentioned before.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Favorite powder for 135 Nosler?
August 24 2021 05:03:15 PM MDT
Hey guys, I'm going to put together some test loads with this bullet, do you have a particular favorite powder? I have, among others, Longshot, CFE pistol, 800X, Blue Dot, #7 and #9. I use Longshot with this bullet in my 40's and get absurd velocities. Also have Power Pistol, but I'm almost out and have little hope of resupplying anytime soon... Thanks

Edit.. I'm shooting a Glock 20 and 29, both with factory length KKM barrels.

Thanks for posting those pics!

Wow, that is a really long bullet. Definitely wouldn't be my choice, for a handloading component anyway. Not much powder capacity left in a load like that. I have to wonder what kind of pressures that load is producing to do 1200 fps.

Yes, I'm not wild about that bullet design either....it takes up in incredible amount of space in that case.  It didn't seem to be particularly hard either.  I stupidly sold my LBT hardness tester years ago, but the bullet was rather easy to sink the pliers into.

I have an industry friend that has access to a pressure lab.  I've had him test some 45 Super loads for me in the past and inquired about doing a couple of these Underwood loads, but he said they are so swamped right now it's not possible to secure any lab time.  If that ever changes I'll post some results here.

Sqlbullet, you are correct.  I got measurements as small as .398" right at the base.
