Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: 155 SWC hits low, now what?

Good point,  Should have included the mix.

9.9 Gr HS-6,(pretty much right in the middle for HS-6 according to Hodgden) mixed brass but mostly never fired Starline, Winchester LP primers.  Should be around 1200 FPS or so.  Lead SWC.  All consistently low but...I am heading to the range in a day or two and will get some better info.

The trigger on the 1006 is a long boy to be sure but this is the first time I've run into this problem, never a problem with 180 or 175 SWC.   This isn't long range but rather around 10 yards

Reloading 10mm ammo / 155 SWC hits low, now what?
September 30 2012 09:23:04 PM MDT
So I did a dumb.  Bought a whole batch of 155gr SWC and loaded several hundred rounds.  They shoot low.  Really low, like a foot  >:(

so now what do I do?  I suppose I could get a bullet puller and whap out all of the bullets and reload with 180 but that sounds like a real PITA.  Fixed sights in on a 1006 so no adjustment to the sight other than drifting left or right. :'(

Any suggestions?

If no suggestions, how about some sympathy?

Lyman turbo 1200.  I run it in the garage and the noise doesn't bother me at all, until I go for a beer forgetting that it is running.  Startles me a bit.  :o

For who ever mentioned putting in a cut up used dryer sheet upthread, thank you very much. Haven't heard that before and put one in the last batch I ran.  Worked a charm.

Loading just a few is smart.  If I may offer a suggestion.

Process all the brass you have up to ready for powder and bullet.  Then you can just leave our seating/crimping die set up and charge/seat/crimp.

My two cents.

What he said.   ;)

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Tumbling 155 gr SWC

Hi, shooting a 1006 so pretty standard.  I've never seen this happen before.  I'm using an RCBS die set.  The bullets are commercial (Colorado Bullet Company) but they recently changed ownership and don't carry this particular bullet any more.

I don't know what the hardness is but they seem to be pretty close to what I've shot before.

Thanks for the replies.  I think I'll reseat them just a schosch down, maybe to 1.250 and see what happens.  I am not forcing the crimp so I don't think I'm overcrimping.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Tumbling 155 gr SWC

So today was IPSC.  I had a batch of 155 SWC lead over HS-6 (9.9 gr).  Not nearly as accurate as I'd like, in fact some of the targets showed evidence of keyholing indicating that the round was tumbling.  I haven't chronoed this round but the guestimate is it should be moving around 1175-1200 fps.

No real evidence of leading in the barrel.

Any suggestions other than shoot up what I have?

I used to use 175 SWC and have a batch of 180 RNL loaded up.  The 180 seems to run pretty well.

I also have a question, I know that 1.260 is the max case length, how far, generally speaking, below the 1.260 do you seat the bullets in your loads?  Do you run right at 1.260 or pull back to 1.250 or even less?

THANKS

I use a Hornady, it is about 20 years old.  I've had good use out of it but if I were to be looking now I'd try one of the square shaped ones.  Emptying 100 primers into a round tray can be a bit of a bother.  Not huge but a bit.

Gear/Equipment / Re: What holsters are your favorites?

I'm using a Bianchi Cruiser accumold holster for IPSC work along with a Bianchi duty style belt and mag holders..  I have a Gould and Goodrich paddle style as well should I decide to carry.

Using a S&W 1006, big honkin' pistol.

Competition Shooting / IPSC
June 19 2012 09:07:10 PM MDT
I have recently started shooting IPSC again after a decade off.

Pulled my old 1006 out, bought a new rig (belt, holster, mag holders, the old belt must have shrunk) and joined a club here in Colorado.  Lot of fun, interesting, I've asked to be put in the old slow flight  ;D and they've accommodated me.

Big changes in the game since I left, different scoring groups for one thing.  Another interesting development is how many women are shooting.  About 15% of the shooters in our club on any given day are females.  It is great to see.

Shooting cast lead 155 gr SWC over 9.9 grains of HS-6 in Starline brass with WW LP primers.  That is my IPSC load.  I've also had some success with 180 gr FMJ over 8.2 gr HS-6 in the same brass.

Could be my old eyes but black type on grey is kind of tough to see.  Is that the only option?

Thanks for starting the show
