When Ruger first introduced its line of 10mm revolvers (circa 2018), they chambered one on the SHR platform,  model #5524. That one had a 6.5? barrel, same length as my old S&W 610 that?s long since been sold.

I had thought about getting one back then, but as happens sometimes, other projects at the time led me to pass on it.

Some time later Ruger came out with the 10mm SRH model #5522, listed as a TALO edition with a 7.5? barrel. It?s currently listed as ?limited availability.?

My only interest in picking one up would be for immediate conversion of the cylinder chambers to proper 10mm Magnum specs by a competent wheelgun smith. Post-conversion, the gun would serve as a dedicated handgun hunting rig and maybe more generally a ?Magnum-level? pinker with the heavy-for-caliber hard cast stuff. I?m currently sitting on about 100 cases of NOS Starline 10mm Mag brass. I have a ton of 10mm jacketed bullets and HC boolits as well.

My questions for the group here are:

Has anyone done this conversion on their own 10mm SRH?

If so, what smith did the conversion, and were you satisfied with his work?

What 10 Mag handloads, if any, have you developed for it?  Some specs on your loads?  (i.e., Bullets/boolits used? Preferred powder(s))

And finally, how does it shoot?

Thanks in advance for any comments and insights!

Should?ve made a SAR-10 10mm pistol. An all steel magnum semi-auto, with CZ-ish ergonomics.

What?s not to like?  8)

Hi Guys-

So I had a Kaboom! on my Gen 4 Glock 20 at the range (have pics) using some reloads a friend loaned me.

Almost stopped reading at: *some reloads a friend loaned me.*  Still, glad you?re okay.

QuotePrior to the reloads, I had been firing Underwood JHP (180 gr), and wondered if that ammo weakened the barrel, or if it was purely a hot load? Regardless of th answer to that, is it REALLY safe to fire Underwood ammo out of a Glock?
Yes. I shoot UW 10mm ammo out of my Gen4 G20 and G40 regularly. No issues. I think the Gen4 10mm factory barrel is actually a better barrel than predecessor versions were.

QuoteMost importantly: Is there a 10mm that has a good reputation for being able to handle Underwood ammo (or at least a good reputation for not blowing up)?  I see a million Glock 20 Kaboom vids posted, and I think even if it was the reload, I'm not going to risk Glock again in 10mm.
What's the best/safest 10mm gun?
I have a couple of the 10XX-series guns, besides the Glocks. Also a Sig P220 Match Elite and a custom Delta, but that one has a fitted Bar-Sto barrel.

All have been good guns for shooting the high-performance (real) 10mm ammo.

Man-oh-man, how I wish IMI or Magnum Research would offer a Desert Eagle in 10mm Magnum.

Start with a 6-in barrel as standard, then offer an optional 10-in hunting barrel like they did with the .357 & .44 Mag Deagles.

Mag capacity could probably get close to 9-rds, or at least more than with their .44Mag and 50AE models.

When I have been into Bud's Gunshop in the past they carried them.
Like everything else... out of stock!

Yep. Still keeping an eye out though.

The real problem is, I can't tell if the 10mm GP-40 model is even still being imported, or whether it's been discontinued.

Checking GB, they're showing a lot of GP guns  - PCCs and some 9mm K100s  - but nothing else.

Factory 10mm ammo / Re: Federal's FBI 190gr bonded HP

With the 5.0" BBL it is very likely to make the 1100 fps, I know there are powders that would push them at 1200 fps fairly easy!
I was getting 1237 fps using the 200 grain Speer Gold Dots with 8.4 grains of BE-86 powder
Have you ever used AA#9 with 200gn bullets to get to 1200+fps?

agtmanThis is what was found in the XM1003A  I think the powder was Silhouette or Win Action Pistol (both the same powder)
https://10mm-firearms.com/factory-10mm-ammo-pull-downs/federal-xm1003a-190gr-bonded-tc-jhp-pull-down/msg33146/#msg33146

The FBI got the specifics right (190-grains @ 1090 fps)
FBI load was the Federal 190gr. bonded JHP ( XM1003A ) at about 1050-1090fps from their S&W 1076s.

Okay, thanks Shadow!

So we might extrapolate and figure that if the Federal 190gn load is, at max, doing 1090fps from the 1076's 4.25" tube, it's likely over 1100fps from a pistol with a 5" barrel, no? ...  Say, firing it out of a Smith 1006, Delta Elite, or Sig P220 Elite.

It's Factory loaded ammo.....Out of our 5" Guncrafter it runs 1181fps.

Bumped this old thread, as this comment interested me. 1181fps out of a 5" barrel is quite respectable for that bullet-weight, given the old Norma standard of "200gns @ 1200fps" from the Bren Ten's 5" tube. With today's hybrid propellants, you could easily get that 190gn bonded slug to 1250fps with less pressure than was achievable in the 1980s.

I'm sitting on a fair sized stash of this old 190gn Federal ammo, but was was never sure of the fps/fpe specs since I don't have access to a chronograph.

Here's what I do know from a conversation I had with some FBI agents back in the day:

It was apparently the Bureau's  alternative 10mm ammo, after the 180gn 10mm 'Lite' load. The agents said Federal had crafted the 190gn bonded load for use in their HK 10mm subguns, spec-ing this ammo to a higher velocity in order to aid function.  However, they also related that senior field agents who still carried 1076s at that time (mid-to-late '90s) preferred  - and apparently were allowed - to load up with this ammo instead of the 180gn Lite stuff.

Again, I was never sure what, exactly, the specs were for this 190gn load shooting it thru my 4.25" Smith 1076, but going by 'plain feel' it definitely felt hotter than the dowloaded 180gn Lite stuff.

Later on in the early 2000s, I read somewhere that this 190gn load clocked at or near 1100fps out of a 1076, but another source said it chrono-ed @ 1050fps.

Has anyone been able to confirm this ammo's velocity out of any other 5" pistols, like a Sig P220 or S&W 1006?

Thanks!  8)

10mm semi-auto handguns / Grand Power 10mm P40?
July 08 2021 05:51:13 AM MDT
So are the Grand Power 10mm P40 pistols still being imported?

As far as I can tell there were two 10mm models offered for a time. One was a DA/SA model with ambi safeties for C&L-ed carry. The other was a decock model. There was a picture of a 5" 'long slide' model on their website, but that was  it.

A YouTube video review I saw did a side-by-side comparison of the DA/SA model to a Sig 10mm P220. The reviewer highlighted the P40's rotating barrel as a significant design feature that mitigated felt-recoil noticeably. The 14-rd mag capacity was attractive, as was the polymer-frame for reducing over-all weight. Grip ergonomics appeared to be more CZ-ish than blocky/Glocky, but relying only on the video I could be wrong.

Here's that YT review:  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AWxVrTOUHZA

In all my travels I've never seen one at a LGS or Fun Show, even just to handle. Nor on the auction sights.

Any experiences or insights on these guns  - good, bad, or otherwise?

Thanks!  8)

I have a Super Redhawk (in a different caliber) and recently picked up a Smith 610 6.5". I can't imagine why Ruger elected to use the Super Redhawk for the 10mm.

Because they were anticipating that a lot of buyers would have the cylinder chambers reamed out to 10mm Magnum, for which that frame is more than adequate.

I have settled on 12.6 grains of Accurate #9 for 1,216 fps (10 round average)...ES 11, SD 4.

Thats a good stout load that isn't so pressurized as to be worrisome...650+ ft. lbs. of energy and plenty of penetration with the XTP.

Can you help a 10mm bro' out?  I'm well-stocked with many canisters of AA #7 - arguably, I'm overstocked.  :-X

Can you  - or anyone else  -  recommend a "hot-ish" AA#7 load with the same 200gn bullet, ...

... and if you know, a stout AA#7 load with a 220gn hard cast bullet?

It would be appreciated. Thanks!  8)
