Adjusting to current events and times

This topic is a mixed bag.

Currently I carry a G42 in .380, because it is so thin and light, that I never feel the need to skip taking it with me. I live in a very red state, and in a very red county, outside any city limits. Hence it made sense to go easy on this aspect of preparedness.

But times have changed. It is now very clear that white, straight, conservative males walk around with a target on their neck. This was no typo.

While I'm no politician or public figure, I'm still easily identifiable as a, well, white, straight, conservative and politically opinionated male.

My idea is, that I don't want to wait until things further escalate, and I also don't want to be a first non-public victim to the developing hate from the left.

Keep in mind that there are millions of people walking around among us with the same level of political hate, as the guy who killed Charlie Kirk.

Keep in mind that there have been a number of similar events this and last year.

Keep in mind, that we regulars are a much easier target, since we don't get any security detail.

Consequently I consider my G42 with 9 rounds as inadequate in the current political climate.

At this point I will change my daily carry piece to something that needs to fulfill these requirements:

- much higher capacity
- above average barrier penetration
- above average FPS for reach
- flat shooting for a potential attacker, targeting from afar, such as from a roof top

At this point I arrived at:

- S&W 5.7 with 22 rounds, flat shooting
- G40 with a mag kit for 19 rounds

I own the G40 and it is very heavy and thick. Carrying that thing will be an adventure. Luckily, no more IWB holsters needed, since we are going open carry in my state.

The S&W 5.7 would be all new to me. And I would upload my own ammo here as well.

How are you guys adjusting to the new norm, if at all.

Any suggestions?

A fast 9?  38 super, 9x23 or a 9x25.  Ammo can be a challenge but those are all smoking hot, have great barrier penetration in heavier bullets, shoot flat and have excellent capacity.

Well I carried the S&W 1006 in my earlier years open carry mostly.  When S&W decided to not provide replacement parts I opted for the Glock 29 in a JS Kydex IWB because it was only slightly larger than the firearm.
Short time later I obtained a Glock 30 for a great price and I have carried it ever since in the same IWB holster till that holster finally broke the belt clip. Since JS went out of business after the owner passed.
I did find another replacement Kydex IWB that was almost the same except the belt clip was adjustable.

There are times I carry my Ruger LCP 380 to small functions and family get togethers just to have something.

Yes the world is in constant change and political and religious factions are a big part of the disruptions.

A 9x25 converted G40 with 2000+ FPS loads? hmmm...

You are not helping lol

A fat and slow .45 out of a short barrel is NOT helping with a bad guy out at 150 yards using a rifle.

I know, this sounds way off - but I'm known for unconventional plans and solutions. I really want a long range pistol.

I want matching sights too.

A 9X25 Barrel in the G40 is the easy button, and the Underwood 90 grain solids probably will be closer to 2100 fps from the extra barrel length of the G40.

I keep resisting the urge to pick up a RIA double stack 9mm and ream it to 9X23. It would trail just behind the 9X25 in velocity, may 100-150 fps with that 90 grain bullet.  But it would hold 18+1 and jump up to 23-24 in an extended base plate mag.

I suppose I could swap the barrel in my G-20 and even my G-29 to 9X25 Dillon or these others...

G-20 Barrels

But then the 9" 10mm barrel gets out there

Nice collection of barrels!

I never loaded hot for my G40. What FPS can I expect with my AlphaWolf 10mm barrel, stock length? 1600 from a 165gr?

Will a 9X25 fly much flatter in comparison?

Are these any good? Sold a bunch of them:

Or this one?

Thanks. The Ebay one may be ok as is, my 9x25's are the Lone Wolf conversion from early on.
The Bar-Sto is an expensive one but likely a great barrel, some Bar-Sto barrels require fitting.
The Bar-Sto barrels (40S&W & 9x25 Dillon) I got for my S&W 1006 both required fitting and the 9x25Dillon I bought from Mike Mcnett of Double Tap required fitting to the slide and frame and then the chamber need to be finished reamed to proper depth.  I fitted them to the 1006 but sent the barrel to a nice guy that did the finish reaming.
This is the Bar-Sto 40S&W and 9x25 barrels both had to be fitted to the S&W1006...

Thank you for all the detailed info.

We had our gun show in town this weekend and I checked out the Ruger as well as the S&W 5.7. The grip on both is really weird since they are so thin but long. Considering the lacquer issues when reloading and the lack of new brass, I'm staying away for now.

And since a 9x25 conversion also comes with challenges, I will see what I can do with my Alpha 10mm barrel first.

Now, in my G29 I use Underwood Xtreme Penetrator rounds for HD. They are 140gr and fly at 1500.

Underwood also has 115 grain Xtreme Defense round at 115gr, coming in at 1700.

With my Alpha barrel, higher pressures, and coming out of a longer 6 inch barrel, I should be able to make 1650 happen for the 140gr, and close to 1900 for the 115gr.

Instead of buying dies and a barrel for 9x25, I get a new chrono and work with what I have om 10mm, for now.

I have a 300 / 600 / 1000 yard range in my neck and will see what I can do between 100 and 300 with my own hot 10mm loads.

Maybe I will get a longer barrel. Are there any 7" barrels for the G40?

Also, all LoneWolf barrels are sold out. Are they going out of business?

crockett

KKM is 5 weeks out on the 7 inch in SS, and 10 weeks on Nitrite black:

Looks like all this loading and testing will become my Christmas passion for the year.

Since we had yet another politically motivated act of violence today, I started carrying my G40 for the first time, in an OWB holster, with my HD Xtreme Penetrator loads in a OEM 15 round mag.

Again, I don't expect anything to happen to me, and it is unlikely in my county, but I will not be the last one to be properly prepared for self defense or defense of any victim in my direct vicinity.

It is heavy and gets into the way when exciting the car and my arm bangs against it when walking.

I need a better holster.

I will also have to go back to training.
