A few years ago I bought my mom (73 years old), a Sig Sauer P938 Rainbow in 9mm. While she thinks the gun is attractive, she hates shooting it. Racking the slide is a challenge and the recoil is a bit much.

Without asking, I surprised her with a new Smith & Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ. She absolutely loves this gun. Racking the slide is no issue, the trigger is light and crisp (compared to other guns in this class), and recoil is very manageable. Even loading the magazine is easy.

While the 380 is on the opposite end of the spectrum as the 10mm, I really think this makes a great gun for new owners / those with lower hand strength.

My wife has her radar on one of those after using one at her cpl class.

Yes, the .380 is a low powered rd, but as always, shot placement is paramount. If this is what works best for her, and she knows how to use it, it sounds like a winning situation

I agree that the EZ 380 is a great option.

My mom uses a 10.5" AR pistol, and it is very operable despite the arthritis and lack of strength that came with old age.

Also, consider this:  The 9mm minimum criteria is driven by LE standards.  Those guys don't just have to make the threat stop/go away, they gotta give the aggressor a nice new pair of bracelets too.  The rest of us just need the bad guy to leave us alone.  This mindset change my world.  It makes a bunch of calibers I had previously never considered suddenly fall in the realm of "why not".  I now have a 32 ACP Beretta that gets to go for a ride on my hip from time to time.
