As I recall the mechanism is supposed to eliminate gas leaks at the gap.

That is the reason for the funny case/crimp/bullet.

Yep, but they will shoot .32 ACP and .32 H&R magnums. It loses about 100 fps with the .32 rounds because they can't utilize the gas seal. Weird revolver, the entire cylinder moves forward when you cock it for single action, or just pull the trigger in double action, to make the gas seal.

I have one of the Nagant revolvers. They are fun little pistols. And because of the gas seal you can put a can on them and make them whisper. When you watch the old B&W movies and the bad guy is sneaking up on a good guy in the shadow to take a close head shot. You see a revolver with a silencer. It's a Nagant. The best ammo for them is the old yellow box Russian stuff if you can find it. Corrosive as hell. But the gas seal works better than any other I've shot and more accurate. I just found 300 rounds of Priv for mine at $21.00 per 50 and snapped it up.

I reload them using fired Fiocchi and Hotshot boxer primed brass. Too bad the Lee dies are for converting 32-20 cases to make them fit , even though they are too short to make use of the gas seal system if you do the conversion. And the shellholder in the Lee dies is for 32-20, and NOT for real Nagant cases. Fortunately I got a RCBS 7.62 Nagant shellholder from Midway, which RCBS does NOT make any more. If I saw that coming, I would have gotten every single one Midway had, and be selling them for BIG bucks to reloaders! (Midway no longer has them now, either)
