Double stack 1911

I'm wondering if anyone has or has seen a 10 mm double stack 1911.  If it was reliable that could be a pretty sweet set up!  I don't recall ever seeing one and I'm on Gunbroker quite a bit hunting around.  I suspect Nighthawk custom might put one together for you at about $4K, but I don't know that for sure.  Do any of the semi-custom shops offer one in their standard line-up?

The STI 10mm's are double stack, as are the fusion kits. A few others.

But they are damn expensive. The STI is listed as $2,482.83 on the STI website

This is my EDC.  It started life as a Para P16-40 stainless.  The original model, not the Limited.  I picked it up used for a song.  I have bought a reamer and reamed the barrel, then polished the chamber and throat.  I picked up one Mec Gar flush magazine, which is in the photo, that holds 15, and three triple K with a slight base plate extension that hold 17.

I also made the following changes to the gun:  EGW flat bottom firing pin stop, 25 lb mainspring, 23 lb recoil spring, aluminum trigger (stock is plastic), aluminum mag release (stock is plastic), flat mainspring housing, Ed Brown high ride beavertail grip safety, and I replaced the ambi safety with a plain extended safety.

First range trip it really mangled some brass:



This turned out to be extractor tension related.  Bent the extractor just a touch and brass issues went away.  The really incredible thing is none of these caused a stoppage.

Please note the small home above the "7" is from a friend shooting something.  This was standing, two hands at about 20 yards.

Then the issue...It would not feed my handloads with Lee 175 gr SWC I cast.  Every other round it would not be in battery completely.  My Witness's ate these loads fine.  Finally figured out it was the OAL of the cartridge.  If they are even .001" over 1.250" then I have issues.  I just ran all my ammo through the seating die again for a OAL of 1.245" and life was good.

I am into this gun less than $700 including the cost of the reamer.  If you want a factory option, you best bet is to get a wide body 40 S&W and have it reamed/replace the barrel, or order something from Fusion.  In both those cases you are are well over $1000.

Last time I was out in the desert I laid down and shot over my backpack at 50 yards with mine.  Group was about 6-8" for a full magazine of 17 rounds, not counting the one flyer I called when I squeezed it off.

I bet your STI will do much better than that.  Very nice looking gun.

I will say shooting at that range starts to tax eyes that have passed the half-way point of life.
