Scary moment today at the range Priv bad brass!!

This was one of the rounds i picked up at the range today. Thank God it was one of the low power Priv 10mm rounds instead of the hot Underwoods!! This has to be bad brass as there was no drama and no unusual hot recoil + this was a brand new round not a reload. To make things more unnerving this came out of my new S&W 1066 ${$default_roll_eyes_smiley}$ . This was NOT cool!!

I have seen many brass do this over the years, mostly Federal Brass. I think it is just brittle brass, although it could be from chemicals used to clean the brass after it is formed.

It does allow the passage of some of the powder gases to leak but it is usually not a big safety issue...

I have had this happen before as well. Also with federal brass. Splits are never as exciting as case head failures.

Glad it was a non-event.

Thanks guys. My main thought is to whether this stuff is safe to reload or not after this?
My plans were to reload all my once fired brass with say 180 grain FMJ with a velocity at around say 1100 FPS just to use as range ammo. I have several hundred rounds of this once fired Priv brass.

Seems like you're not the only one to have problems with PPU brass. After reading some of these threads, I now sort PPU and other unknown headstamp brass into the "recycle" pile!

The Delta Elite issue doesn't bother me so much considering the tottal lack of case support in this pistol. However the split cases with the Glocks does. I have hundreds and hundreds of rounds of once fired brass and a lot of it is Priv. Guess I need to spend some time looking through it now. So far I have fired over a thousand rounds of the stuff ( must through both my and my sons Glock 29's) and this was my 1st issue so---.

I wouldn't worry about the ones that didn't split. Just inspect carefully and you will be fine.

I have had a split or two but never a blow-out. I can deal with these but would rather not! In ammo it's when, not if.

Like I was told when I first started riding a Motorcycle by a guy with some scars. We all go down!

I have shot 500 PPU 10mm loads from my Glock 20 Gen4 and had no issues of brass splitting. It is pretty accurate in my gun but no hotter than a 40 S&W. I have also reloaded the brass from these without any issues to full power levels and some cases 4 times now. I'm glad I still have 1500 of the factory PPU loads on hand with the ammo shortages going on now , they will work if need be !!!

I've seen brand new, Factory cases split like this and nothing from Brass that have a dozen reloads
The Nickel Winchester (10mm) I currently run have well over ten loads
Granted, I am down to less than 800 of the original 1000 I bought as Virgins, almost twenty years ago
I'm holding back my 1000 Virgin Winchester Brass Cases for when I drop below 500 Nickel
