AR-15's are cheap

At least if you are willing to learn how to assemble a lower. And it is really very easy.

I have noticed lately that I can always find a lower + a rifle kit for under $500. In my area, usually under $500 including shipping and fees.

Right now on Palmetto State Armory's website you can track down a rifle kit that includes everything but the stripped lower for $399. Add in one of the Independence Day lowers for $49, and you have a $50 to spend on shipping and FFL. In my area I would come in well under $500.

Just mentioning this as I think many guys are skipping the AR game as they are perceived to be "expensive". But deals can be had. I didn't link cause I don't want anyone thinking I am pimping gear. If you are interested it is easy to find on their site.

Anyone else seeing great deals hear lately?

Yep, if someone has been sitting on the fence for an AR, now seems to be the time to buy. Hell, I see new Colt 6920's for way below a grand. I'm still waiting for a deal on a gently abused LMT.

I really could use some advice on this! I'm not an AR guy and while this is not my first 10 mm is my first AR so

Is 16 inch the right barrel size or should I consider shorter ones?

IIRC, anything shorter than 16" on a rifle is considered a SBR, needing the gubbermit permission and all the paperwork.

Define cheap. I mean I used to buy Mosin Nagant surplus rifles for $69.95. Of course that was way back before Obozo got elected and drove all the gun prices up.

$70 for a working fairly accurate 30 cal bolt action rifle was CHEAP!

And at present a very long wait for the paperwork to get processed.

Of course, a pistol isn't a short barreled rifle and there are some pretty good "forearm stabilizers" out there. So you can be legal with a 14.5" or 10" as long as the lower is registered correctly.

I picked up four back in those days. Good guns. Every collection should have a few.

Well not exactly about cheap, I have been waffling between getting a .308 AR or the 10 mm AR.
Since I have been strictly a pistol guy. I sure could use some coaching from some of you rifle guys out there

I don't have 10mm AR so can't speak to that. I do have a DPMS AR chambered in 308 which I thoroughly enjoy! Bought it middle of Nov. 2008 (date should be obvious to even casual observer) on a whim, just to have. Slapped a half decent scope on it and trotted to range to sight in. To my complete shock it was grouping 100 yard, 3 shot strings that could be covered by a quarter right out of the box which I most assuredly was not expecting. It instantly became primary hunting rifle for next three deer seasons. To this day it's #1 go to for almost every hog hunt I go on. Even with several other hunting rifle options, it still right at the top for whitetail or pigs. Don't know if others are just as good or if I just got really lucky but it's been used a lot and never disappointed (so long as I do my part right).

While I haven't gotten into the AR platform, I am leaning toward the AR10 chambered in .308 Winchester.

The .223/.224 AR15 does look like the cheapest for shooting and handloading standpoint. Less powder, cheaper bullets, plenty brass available.

Just haven't pulled the trigger on this project yet! $:-\$ ${$default_huh_smiley}$

When you do, build your own. You will thoroughly enjoy the project, and end up with a well made rifle you know inside and out. If I can do it, anyone can.
