AMT Automag III .30 questions

a buddy of mine is looking to part with his AMT Automag III .30...Likes, dislikes, reloading options? I think I will buy it regardless, but would really like to learn more about it first

Be advised that the .30 Carbine is a "Light Rifle" cartridge. It is commercially loaded to perform in gas-operated, carbine-length (18") barrels You are going to sacrifice velocity and be subject to pronounced muzzle blast from the pistol. That said, I love the .30 Carbine in its original home.

If the gun runs trouble free, I'd buy it. The gun uses a rebounding firing pin that can be a headache. I just bought a new FP spring and problem was over. For my shooter, the OAL is critical for accuracy. You'll have to play with yours to see if it is also picky about OAL. I'm now shooting 14.7gr H110 under a Speer 110 gr Varminter bullet and WSP primers. It knocks a coyote down about as hard as my Ford truck. Bullet performance has been exceptional. Accuracy for mine will just about match a rifle at 100yds if you can. So far, it's a favorite but on a hog size target, it's pretty much out of gas at 50 yds on a hard target like a feral hog. I strongly suggest NOT shooting it in tall grass. The muzzle blast and a flame thrower have a lot in common.

I've got all of the second gen Automags, 50AE, 45 WinMag, 10mm Mag, 9mm WinMag, 30 carbine, and 22 mag. 
The 30 is the only one of the bunch that didn't need work to get it running.  The Automags have chronic light primer strike problems.  The hammer struts all bend and the spring gets all jacked up and bent into a Z-shape.
