Handguns / Re: AMT Automag III .30 questions
March 29 2020 10:41:04 PM MDT
If the gun runs trouble free, I'd buy it. The gun uses a rebounding firing pin that can be a headache. I just bought a new FP spring and problem was over. For my shooter, the OAL is critical for accuracy. You'll have to play with yours to see if it is also picky about OAL. I'm now shooting 14.7gr H110 under a Speer 110 gr Varminter bullet and WSP primers. It knocks a coyote down about as hard as my Ford truck. Bullet performance has been exceptional. Accuracy for mine will just about match a rifle at 100yds if you can. So far, it's a favorite but on a hog size target, it's pretty much out of gas at 50 yds on a hard target like a feral hog. I strongly suggest NOT shooting it in tall grass. The muzzle blast and a flame thrower have a lot in common.

Reloading / Re: Ohio lockdown
March 22 2020 11:12:58 PM MDT
Dallas County is now in what they're calling a Shelter in Place quarantine. Pretty much what Ohio is going thru. Only travel is for food, meds, or to take care of a family member. The counties with large cities are expected to announce in the AM. Houston and Austin, probably Waco and Ft Worth. The medium size cities like San Antonio are expected to be shutdown by Wednesday. Gov'r Abbott of Texas is considering not making the entire State under this quarantine as many of the counties have not had one single case of Corona virus. Those counties are primarily in West Texas where there's more coyotes than people. And far South Texas where daily temps have already exceeded 90F. The virus is known to be temperature sensitive. While I have no concerns over it, I believe the next 90F day, which is supposed to be this Thursday, I'll park the truck in the sun with the windows rolled up. Looks like I'll be working at the bench for a while getting brass ready.

Reloading / Here we go again

My nephew was out and about today and wanted to know if I needed anything in the way of components. While I told him no cause I could buy it cheaper with all of the online folks having sales and no haz mat, was I forever wrong. Primers are again scare. Forget the price, there aren't many to be had. I found none of small pistol, a few large pistol, a few small rifle, which were the ones I needed. Looks like the Obama years all over again.

Shooting Times mag says the TCM powder is slower than AA#9 and similar to H110/296. I doubt that it works in the 10mm case but look around the internet. You might just find somebody that has data for it and the gun still in one piece.

Questions/Suggestions / Re: security
March 11 2020 01:51:51 PM MDT
To prefeace this with, my expertise with computers is pretty much limited to turning it off and on. The wife, that girl rides herd on over 50,000 units for the 5th largest school district in Texas. Sometimes I think she was abducted by aliens cause she ain't speakin' english, at least to me. I normally use Firefox as it works better with some of the work I do that includes big engineering documents and videos. This site runs clean for me with no security issues. I also have Chrome on this unit as I sometimes have to use the Google Cloud to work in concert with others on huge documents. If I pull up this website on chrome, no issues. What I would suggest, which is what has been suggested to me many years back, is to send yourself an email with all of your favorites. That way you always have them. Delete all of your browsers except Explorer and then download new browser(s). You can then pick up your favorites at your email. AS the wife tells me, NEVER use the autofill for your sign in for any website. It's easy pickin's for those that are not yer friends. I use two different names/passwords for forums. I use a different one for places where I might buy things, Amazon, Grafs, MidwayUSA,etc. Emails have a different one. I would strongly suggest that you have a private email that only friends and family have. Have another email for BS like where you buy things, forums, etc, where all of the spam goes and have it as your default email. They won't get much should it get hacked. More than likely this will solve your issue. I'm also a firm believer in Crap Cleaner and run it everyday. It's a freeby. I occasionally run malewarebytes too and use Microsofts Defender for the AV. Defender ain't love but it ain't bad either. It has kept the bad guys out for the last several years. Hope this was helpful.

Yeah, I pulled the trigger over the weekend on a slug of Speer stuff over the weekend. The added rebate made it a real sweet deal. I haven't been able to find anyone with a volume of the 75gr HP 6mm that my varminter and 6x45 shoot in a hole at 100 yds. Grafs had them. Grafs hard to beat due to fixed shipping and pricing. I didn't see the 200gr 40 calibers at all on the list. Probably would have bought a few just to play with. Now that you've bragged about having them, you owe everybody a range report.

I shoot a lot of the .40 calber 180gr HST from American Reloading. The bullet they show in the current offering is not exactly the same bullet I have. Mine do not have a cannelure on the bullet at all and are contract over runs, not pulled. Over the years I've kinda backed off buying the pulled bullets. Usually when they pull a bullet, it's due to an issue with the bullet. You can get varying weights, different lengths, some out of round, some not fully formed, most will have different ogives. But they've worked good enough to kill paper. I've yet to have any fatal injuries from a paper target monster, a few have caused bleeding of the hands but nothing serious.

Reloading / Heads up- corona virus & US Post Office
March 08 2020 10:49:34 PM MDT
A lot of what I buy comes from the internet. Bullets, sometimes powder and primers, brass, dies, etc. From what my nephew, the Constitutionalist attorney, says,he thinks the Feds will likely be taking over the mail. What they are talking about is mail restrictions too. They want to cut the amount of mail that needs to be handled everyday. He suspects that anything gun related is going to be on the list. While it's still an unknown, if you're needing something and have been waiting, I wouldn't wait much longer. From the WSJ:
WASHINGTON—Federal agencies are preparing to deploy emergency plans to maintain essential services—from directing air traffic to delivering mail and making Social Security payments—as the novel coronavirus epidemic widened and the nation's capital diagnosed its first case.

FWIW, I load for a lot of guns of the family. They bring me all kinds of brass to reload. ANY A-USA brass goes straight to the trash can. I won't load it. From not sizing correctly, no neck tension, primer pockets way out of size or flash holes so off center it's a wonder it ever went off. I won't even consider reloading it. If that's all the brass you have, you're outa brass.

I have a hunting bud that owns one of the largest scales companies in South Texas. He had recommended a MyWeight scale to me. I don't recall the model and could easily be the one Ken is recommending. It was the most accurate digital scale I ever saw. Most won't weight the same charge of powder 24 hours later, and worst, at 48 hours you'll get an even bigger difference. Most of the scales with the reloader as the target buyer have this issue unless you're wanting to spend some big bucks. My MyWeight scale was great but unfortunately just couldn't weigh the F350 that ended up on it. Hated to see that scale in pieces but it is what it is. You can look thru all of the MyWeight scales at Old Will Knotts Scales. Make sure you understand what you are reading, it can get confusing which is more sensitive or even if it weighs in grains. If you were happy with the RCBS sensitivity at .4 grain, you'll be happy with one at .2 or .1. Now if you wanna really spend some bucks, they have them down to .001 sensitivity but that'll cost a 4 digital number. Here's the website to Old Will Knotts and a scale I'm probably going to buy as a backup to what I have. As of now I'm using an Ohaus 10-10 scale and frankly, it's pretty lousy. I always setup my powder measure via scale and recheck it with a different scale. The 10-10 gets it in the neighborhood while the micrometer on the powder measure finishes it off.

Your RCBS 750 scale is both battery or converter powered. If you've been using the converter I'd try a 9v battery. If it doesn't work, the warranty is 2 years only and only to the original buyer. It's been my experience with RCBS that they don't move from the warranty period concerning anything electric. I've had a few of the chinese junk units that RCBS sells only to have it die right after the warranty period. No, they haven't made anything good yet. But it can't hurt to try. If you intend to replace the unit with another digital scale, look for a jewelry scale that also weighs in grains. The RCBS you currently have is accurate to .4 of a grain +/-. Most jewelry digitals are at least half that and some down to .001 grain, providing you want to throw the money at it. Some will count how many times it has weighed the project which can be helpful. Some have overload protection which can save a unit should something get dropped on the scale that is more than it's capacity. Regardless, you need to know that digital scales marketed into the reloading market are basically bottom of the barrel crap. You can get a decent jewelry scale for the same money. But you'll need to research all of them to find the right one for you.

Gunsmithing / Re: Recoil springs- Measuring Strength

QuoteHow much trouble do you have getting that long #1 spring back in the gun?

In my opinion, not much trouble at all. However, the wife claims that when I do, it looks like 2 greased monkeys trying to have sex with a beachball. Not sure about her sometimes.

I thought my R1 came with a flat firing pin stop but found out it wasn't. The bottom has a curve on it. The Wilson I bought is flat.

Reloading 10mm ammo / Re: Hot reloads ring of fire
March 06 2020 12:50:10 PM MST
Want fire rings? Get you a 357 mag, H110 powder, and 110gr HP bullets. You can almost use the case as a dipper to load the powder as it will a compressed load. LOTS of muzzle flash. I have 2 others that will light up the night, an AMT Automag III 30 carbine pistol and the Thompson Center 10" 30-30. The 30 carbine is loaded with H110 and 110gr carbine bullets. Runs flames out about 10-12 feet. While that may sound impressive, it's a major pain when night hunting. The best is the Contender. I generally use it to clear the firing line of idiots when forced into using a public firing range. You don't want to have to stand any where near me unless you just like being slapped upside the head with a shovel. The load is 35gr H335 under a 110gr carbine bullet. You also don't want to shoot it in tall grass. The muzzle flash at night is blinding, and I mean blinding as in you can't see anything for several minutes. I liken it to an artillery round rather than anything that can be hand held. I would have to say it can't get any better or bigger and still still be hand held.

Gunsmithing / Re: Recoil springs- Measuring Strength

Remington R1 10mm Hunter 6". I think this pistol is the King of throwing brass. As a newby to 10mm, I didn't think much about the violent recoil of the gun when I first got it. I just assumed it came with the large case and heavy bullets. I changed my recoil spring to the Wolff that you cut. It's at maximum length for the pistol so I have no clue what it is. At the same time, I changed out to a flat bottom firing pin stop and I changed to the hammer spring to a 25lbs. Most women will not be able to rack the slide on it as it's stout. Obviously it's a lot easier by pulling the hammer to firing position and then rack the slide but I generally don't. I also installed a Wilson recoil buffer. A couple of things happened. I was getting wear on the blue of the frame at the rear. I'm assuming that slide velocity was too high causing it. I touched it up with some cold blue to track it and that issue is gone as the cold blue looks like the day I put it on. The ejection of brass to the next county still happens with my normal max loads of 12.8gr 2400 under a 180gr bullet. But I also shoot coated bullets that are plinkers and I don't have to chase brass very far now. The #1 thing that it did for me was something I didn't expect. It pretty much took a ton of recoil out of the gun. It's no longer a violent recoil and easily controllable.  It didn't change anything with the trigger pull or function- still clean and crisp and about 4lbs. Accuracy with my loads from bags is under an inch now. I also unloaded that plastic crap they called an optic front sight and put a Fusion solid front sight on it. So now the sight picture is the same as any of my full target pistols. Overall, I happy with how it's working now. I've had a few good shooters run a mag or two thru it and they all loved it enough to make me a money offer. At age 73, money doesn't have the importance it once did. I'll keep my R1 and keep it just like it is. That's been my experience with the R1 and springs/firing pin stop.

Reloading / Re: 7.62x39 for a friend

Lee dies are far too cheap not to buy a set. You can find them normally at a gunshow, used. For loading, the best results I've had used a max powder charge of AA1680 under the Lehigh Controlled Chaos bullet. It's a one hole shooter at 100 yds out of my AR. The Controlled Chaos bullet is THE bullet if feral hogs are the target animal. For a plinker with the ability to hunt, look at the Speer .311 125gr spitzer. If none of those combinations works with what you have available, here's the load data manual for the 7.62x 39.

I picked up some of the V Crowns as new manufacture but a closeout in 40 caliber, 180gr. I loaded them up with a max load of 2400 powder, about 1250'ps, and found the accuracy to be good but bullet performance lacking. The bullets were not near tough enough for that velocity. They literally came apart which isn't always a bad thing. On a jack rabbit at 25 yds it put bunny all over the pasture. It would not make a hunting bullet for anything you intend to eat. Slowed down to about 1150'ps, the bullet worked flawlessly. Being that you have a lighter bullet and more velocity available, don't expect stellar bullet performance. But it's like anything else, don't know if you don't try. Sierra apparently dropped the 40 caliber 180gr V Crowns so there may have been issues with that particular bullet/weight/velocity/performance. You might have to load them down IF you intend to hunt with them. But then you might also be like my little brother who firmly believes penetration is irrelevant if you blow half of one side off. Hope they work great for you.
