Gen 2 Glock 20 & Underwood 180 TMJ ..... :o(

OK, so I now have 260 rounds downrange, 70 being Underwood 180 Grain TMJ, 20 Buffalo Bore 155 Grain Tac-X, 20 Corbon 165 Grain JHP, 50 Blazer 200 Grain TMJ & 100 Federal American Eagle 180 Grain FMJ.   The gun is a BKU serial, placing it about 1996.  I have run both the stock RSA & an uncaptured 22 lb Wolfe on a Zev-Tek Stainless Guide Rod.   Everything runs flawless with either setup except the Underwood 180's.   Out of 70 rounds I have had 47 FTF's, no difference using either RSA.

Everything shot to POA at 15 yards except the Underwood & Buffalo Bore, they both shot left about 3 inches.   The Buffalo Bore did function fine, but 17 of the cases are Smiled badly ( 10 rounds with each RSA ).  I love the gun & carry it on my back country excursions in a self made Kydex holster using a Chesty Puller Chest Harness from Simply Rugged.  I have about decided that I have an out of spec lot of Underwood, with 80 rounds left.  What should I do?

I am planning breaking down the remaining 40 rounds of Buffalo Bore and reloading it a little milder .....

Being the older model if I recall, the aftermarket barrels don't fit the early ones, correct me if I am wrong...  

If you're a handloader, you can adjust the rounds to your satisfaction. 
Trying to understand why the higher impulse rounds are shooting left...What about the slide lock, is there some wear on it or the barrel lug where it rides?   What about slide rails?  Do you see anything out of the ordinary that the higher impulse rounds could be causing the issue.

Thanks for the input Shadow.  There is no strange wear on any of the parts, actually I think it has more visible wear in the 260 rounds I have shot than when I got it.  The gent I traded with bought it new and only shot 30-40 rounds through it.  I checked my records and found it is a June 1995 production.  I have gone back to the stock RSA, it is much easier to reassmeble .....   

I am getting ready to start reloading for it, have about 190 usable once fired & 300 new Starlines.  I also still have 40 of the Buffalo Bore 155's, 40 of the Corbon 165's, the 80 Underwood's & 100 AE 180's left.
I bought 250 Berry's 180 Grain Plated TC's & 1,000 Extreme 165 Grain HPCB's.  I've also got the 2 Banger Lee 175 Grain TC Mold & a bunch of WW Ingots.  Will try both Powder Coating and Liquid Alox for lube.

The Gen 2 barrels are historically less supported than the Gen 3. Same goes for the "forty" Glocks. I would suggest getting yourself a Gen 3 barrel, or go with an aftermarket. From the pictures I have seen, my Gen 3 barrel has about the same support as the latest Lone Wolf barrels coming out. I haven't yet had a smile with Underwood. I will be firing some Buffalo Bore 180 tomorrow so we shall see how that does.

The Underwood 180 TMJ has been problematic. It didn't work in my gun, your gun, and some others I have read here. Stick with the 165 TMJ, it is AWESOME. The only problem is it has been out of stock lately.

Yes sir, I did. I posted that the Glock runs perfectly with the right set up for the ammo. Fact is, the Underwood 180 TMJ was so bad I never tried it again. The reports I have read here confirmed this fact, so I don't bother with it anymore.

Thanx for the reply 4949shooter,  the only brass that smiled in my Gen 2 barrel was 17 of the 20 Buffalo Bore 155 grain Tac-x.  They functioned fine using each RSA set-up for 10 rounds.  I did check all the fired brass & found both the Corbon & AE will slip into my Gen 2 chamber easily, while the Underwood will also chamber but with a little thumb pressure. The Corbon & AE will both drop free while the Underwood requires a thumbnail assist.  I didn't check the BB brass and have kept it seperated.

I really think I have some out of spec Underwood.   I will shoot the remaining 80 rounds and then try and salvage the brass with a pass through a gutted FCD.  As I said earlier, I am going to pull the remaining 40 rounds of the 155 Tac-x and replace the powder charge with a more prudent dose of AA#9 or 2400.  I think the 155 Grain Tac-x with still perform well at 1250-1300 FPS. 

I really like the Gen 2 & think I will be fine keeping things moderate using the stock barrel.  It will replaced my S&W 28-2 4" as my back country companion.  The 28-2 only held 6 140 Grain XPB's and was slower to reload, the G20 holds 11 155 Tac-x's and reloads faster, whats not to like ......       I carry in a Chesty Puller Harness from Simply Rugged, using a Sourdough Pnacake for the 28-2 and a home built Kydex for the G20.  Makes it more comfortable while riding ATV's,  & driving buggies or Jeeps.   I live in a small cabin in Sequoia National Forest and venture into the back country several times a week.

OK,  So I got 20 of the BB 155 Tac-x's and 5 of the Underwood 180 TMJ's pulled down this afternoon.   I'm a little under the weather today and Snow is forecast for tomorrow and Saturday, so I will finish the pulldowns later.   Anyway, here is what I got using an RCBS Kinetic Bollet Puller and an Ohaus 505 Balance Beam Scale.

The Buffalo Bore 155 Tac-x:

Brass Case:  Head Stamp - A USA 10mm Auto ( Appears New )
Primer: Silver Large Pistol
Bullet: Barnes 155 Tac-x ( Copper/ Lead Free HP )
   Muzzle Velocity from BB Web Site -  1425 FPS from stock G20 
Powder Charge: I weighed 5 random during the pulldown, finding charges of 11.3, 11.2, 11.2, 11.2 & 11.2 grains of an unknown powder that was so compressed it looked like a pellet.
20 charges weighing 222.6 grains average of 11.13



The Underwood 180 TMJ:

Brass Case:  Head Stamp - Underwood 10mm ( Appears New )
Primer- Silver Large Pistol
Bullet - 180 Grain Truncated Cone with a dished base ( Appears similar to the Xtreme HPCB )
   Muzzle Velocity from Underwood Web Site - 1300 FPS
Powder Charge: All 5 weighed 14.4 Grains, Unknown Powder ( Fine Texture & didn't appear
       to have been Compressed )

Last time I pulled the Buffalo Bore 155 TAC XP, I found the compressed pellet of Power pistol powder 11.0 grain in charge weight.

The Underwood 180 TMJ's seems to have a slightly different powder charge in your pull-down and that charge weight seems to lead me to Accurate Arms #9 but it is possible it may be something else.  Don't know without visual confirmation.
