Remington 870

I spent the morning working on my nephew's Remington 870 Express Super Magnum, he has been hunting ducks and geese  with this one for its 3rd season.

His complaint was, that after he shot and pulled back on the forward grip, to eject the spent casing the other two shells would try to enter the lift and ejection port area, sometimes leaving the spent case in the chamber.

Well I tore it down, looking for things that could cause the issues, there was some powder flakes, some bits and pieces of marsh grass.  Took the receiver, breech bolt and slide block and trigger assy out to the shop and use the air compressor to blast out any loose debris in and around and behind the rails and ejector and the nooks and crannies in the trigger assy.  It seems I got it all cleaned up and the things move like they should.

I was looking at the left and right shell latches that hold the shells in the magazine as they didn't show wear or breakage, cleaning allow the shells to feed one at a time.  At first two were trying to feed, the shell latches may have been sticking somewhat.  They move freely and are feeding one at a time now.

The other thing I noticed was the shell ejector seems lazy and or the extractor being very easy to move almost like a weak extractor spring to push on it to grip shell and hold it.  As I studied the ejection, I think the spent shell is slipping out from under the extractor too soon or too easily as it contacts the ejector.  This may need some replacement parts to improve function.

Anyway, its clean and will function, but the spent casings may still not clear the ejection port, if cycling too slowly or if the ejection port is held facing upward.  I'll have to see what he wants to do and give Remington a call if it is in warranty or can be fixed at what cost.

I just went looking on the internet and found that this is a common issue especially with the seconds guns with MIM extractors.  Here is a video explaining some issues and how to fix them!
